The early sun hangs low. Shimmering lines race across the pool deck. Suzu Kofune stands apart beneath a drooping flag, the whistle light in her hand, hair tied back strong as a knot. Today is the Summer Lane Swim Meet.
Suzu’s never stood on a start block in front of the whole league — she always felt the pressure crush in close, hands slick and heavy. Her dream of leading Hoshino High’s swim team to regionals wavers when Makoto strolls over, easy smile in place. “Suzu, you bringing the fire or the nerves?” he asks. Their shared laugh cuts the tension, but a cool weight lingers behind Suzu’s gaze.
The team’s freshman, Haruka, lines up by her. “If I sink, just leave me. Save the team,” she mocks, but Suzu ruffles her cap. “We’re here. We all float. That’s the rule.” Even Kento, the gruff, third-year captain, breaks script to tease: “Let’s show Sakamoto High they’re just fish in our pond.” Applause echoes as warm-ups end. The meet starts with the hundred free.
Suzu steps up, and for a brief moment, the pace of it threatens to overwhelm her again. Do you remember the last time you felt everything in your chest, the way she does now? When the shot cracks, her body reacts first, tucked and darting for the far side. Water rushes in her ears. She can hear little else. Beneath the blue, in that hush, Suzu finds clarity.

Crowds stomp feet. The echo mixes with her pulse. Is all of this real, or some old wish dredged up from long ago? Reed, their rival’s ace anchor, hits the wall in the medley relay three tenths clear. Suzu gets named lead swimmer for the next race. Coach Yamada gives a small nod. “Swim for air, not for fear,” he mutters. The message lands. Sukiyaki, just out of reach, tucked in the team thermos, waits for a win.
Suzu stands on deck. Trace of a smile. The fifty fly stares back at her with challenge and hope. Stepping to the block, towels drop away. “You got this,” Haruka whispers in a lash of foam. The buzzer eats any doubt. She claws forward: strong, sure, body slipping snake-smooth, arms silent under the roar. 
Behind her, Makoto screams “Go!”, the sound bright but stray — lost to water’s pull.
Technique matters in fly. She nails it on the third stroke. On the last turn, time slows over a black line; salt burns her eyes for a blink. Body protests — why bother? She pushes on. Rival Reed, two lanes over, keeps pace, lips blue. Suzu digs deeper, matching each flutter beat for beat, eyes set like the old tale her mother once told: “Swim for the moon, land among stars.”
It’s head-to-head by the finish. Another touch. One fraction late — or maybe just ahead. Hoshino blue cheers, the banner above the pool starting to unravel, time flapping away in wind.

The whole pool seems to hold its breath as first legs rocket clean. Makoto eats up the water — he has form now. Haruka, shaky, doesn’t fumble the hand-off, and Suzu, last on anchor, wedges the band up above. So close, her mind stops.
Half a hand in front with twenty meters left. Kento hollers across the water, “Don’t leave regrets on deck!” Suzu’s vision blurs as she surges ahead.
The touchpads doom silence. Everyone waits as timers check screens. Coach Yamada clenches a towel, suction from so many dashed dreams past written in lines around his mouth. Results post. By a blink, Hoshino secures a spot for regionals. Group hugs, stunned joy. Kento and Haruka both in tears. Suzu does not cry; she watches the still water, breath fast and unsteady.
But it doesn’t end there. In the locker room, Suzu finds a note tucked in her cap: “Swim me under that city moon? Challenge — one lap, no crowd, best of one.” It’s unsigned, but the pen stroke is Reed’s. Suzu laughs. Stakes aren’t medals now, just a duel, for reasons known only to those who live for the code of the pool.
