Synopsis
The dust settles in Whitebridge after last week’s fiery brawl. Crow Arasawa hasn’t slept all night. A whisper has been crawling through the black alleys to her window. Her brother’s fate, she’s told, lies inside Blackmire Cavern—and that means so does hers. People say nobody returns from there. Crow hears them, but all she thinks about is the way Kenji last swung his lucky coin, smiling about debts a sister can’t repay with just loyalty.
A peril like Blackmire doesn’t let its tales leave easy, does it? Imagine knowing every step forward could be your last. Do you turn back, or do you dive dark, hoping that’s what heroes do?
Cut to dusk: The rag-tag party gathers at the city’s edge. Junji’s lantern flickers in shaky hands. “We could run, you know,” he mutters. Rana pulls on her goggles, rolling her shoulder as if a burden slips with the fit of cool metal. Crow is there—dry eyes, blade wrapped tight. Kenji is hope’s shadow somewhere inside, still waiting.
The Mission Sets
The prize? A chunk of gnollite that burns cold instead of hot. It’s what keeps Kenji alive somewhere in the depths, the enchanter Osei claims. Spirits in the woods hiss at Crow’s name; every villager that sees her that night spits behind her back. She doesn’t look back once as they pass.
Why do curses choose us, reader, or do we step into them with eyes wide? As you read, aren’t you pulled after Crow?
The first trap at the cavern’s fanged entry shakes even Junji. The door bites back, a slab with slick slime. Rana tosses in a rust-bitten token. “Safe, probably,” she sighs. Inside, every echo isn’t just a part of your own voice. It might be something older. 
Inside the Maw
Crow leads the blind among the blind, torch high. Flash—skittering claws brush her calf. Torchlight circles on walls gleaming with tiny, golden eyes peering through moss agony. “Don’t look,” Kenji’s voice calls from memory. The party shuffles in sweat and fear. Steps reverberate lower. Is it hope, or is it the cave playing cheap with what Crow remembers?
Down a channel that glows like cold veins, the party hits their next trial: Jellied shades boiling up from orange puddles.
Quick steel flashes—last time it kept Crow alive. Rana ducks a shadow, cursing, then just laughs. “Looks like misery made more company.”
One slip sends Junji over a stone lip! Crow grabs for cloth or hair, her fist closing on nothing. “Keep lighting the path!” he yells, trying not to sound angry—or lost. Have you felt terror gnaw around bones?
Deeper, the true cost rises: The passages fork, sharp left for shallow breaths, right to echoing black. Rana surveys the tiles. “Or you can pick, Hero.” Crow glances to Junji crying into a scarf. Is choice real here?
Halfway Hope (or Not)
The party stops for a short breath. There’s worry in everyone’s faces. “Was your brother this dumb, too, Crow?” Rana whispers. “He was dumber,” Crow whispers back, warmth in her voice.
Readers, tell me you’d be steady with stakes like these? Maybe hope falters when your light is just a splutter and stories rise around your knees.
They find Kenji’s sigil—smeared in soot by claw marks—but the coin she remembers lie bent and gnawed in the mud. Something huge drops behind them, silent. Rana’s wrench is up in one shaking hand. “Please don’t be what I think,” she mumbles, voice too thin for comfort.
It’s not their fabled Hydra yet—it’s one head, clamped shut as if forming. The true beast they seek, farther in. But this is no lesser threat. 
Do you ever wish a story stopped here? But Crow steadies her hand. Each of them chooses to fight. Swords clang, light crackles, shouts echo up the stone stomach of Blackmire.
Junji swings wildly. Rana flanks, knives lost in scales. Silver light splits the fungus pushing from necrotic rock at their knees. Crow’s blade draws looping arcs and, for a second, she’s not alone—Kenji runs beside her, sure as ever. “Don’t stop, Crow!” Before she falters, the monster falls noisily back.
The True Terror
Cuts smart, magic sizzles, but hunger inside these tunnels clangs stronger. Pain inks across Crow’s neck. She’s slower, drained.
Rana’s foot snaps metal under old bones. Something whines awake—a timer grinds. The door behind them grates shut by itself. No going back now. How’s your breath, dear reader? Does danger excite or stifle?
Crow raises lantern. Slime swallows her tired flame. A shape scoots—but it isn’t Kenji. Just a trick of shadow and story. The way the cavern narrows, soon there’s only one tight path left.
Do you walk willingly in the maw—if someone waits inside you can’t leave behind?
Still, there’s hope when you name your own disaster. Crow spits blood, grins hard, and turns ahead as scales rattle alive—right before every torch flares white-blue in answer. 
Cliffhanger
A deep roar rattles enough bones to threaten collapse—all three stand, soaked and tired, in the entry to the real lair. Hydra’s seven glowing eyes greet them under a pillar of mist and knotted root. Its breath pours heat and cold at once. The coin Kenji loved spins loose near her shoes, untouched by slime. Crow lifts it and grips harder than hope. She starts forward almost holding her breath.
The last thing you see is her raised sword mirror-like in torchlight, coin between her stained hands, oath scrawled on lips, “This one, Kenji… this is where we end the debt.” Curtains slam shut, leaving every answer dark till next time.
