Threads in the Dark: The Wake of Project Severance

Nobody wants to end up below Tower District as the sunsets. A louder train passes overhead. Reina Sakamoto can count her breath as she moves, silent near shops stacked with stones and locked screens.

She’s got a plan—she always does. Reina’s smart. She wants to know why kids gone missing never come home. They call it ‘the Vapors’ down here, this odd blue light by drains that worms up late at night.

Reina’s the one with a badge no one checks but always asks. Her friend, Yosuke, hates this place but tags along since his own sister went missing six moons ago. He wipes his hands over his jacket, trying to calm his voice. “You’re sure the map’s good this time?” he whispers. Reina grins, flicks her torch, and jerks her head. “Like new. Keep quiet.”

The evening creeps. They slip through a fence ringed near Steam Street: the entrance to the lost part of town. All around there’s broken iron, shadow, strange buzzing as lab vents cough up ribbons of white air.

The north wall looks like glass, but it’s all spent touchscreens patched with wires. Kaito meets them in the yard’s dark; spiky hair cut like he can’t sit straight, face smeared with soot. “If heads catch us—they’ll throw you in with the rest.” Reina doesn’t give a nod. “Let’s find Nana. End this.”

Together, they move behind the market’s old bakery. Some quiet rats tip things off, but Reina tosses crumbs without pause. Within blocks, they find a locked gate. They get it open after three tries; inside is dank, filled with vents and whispering pipes. They crawl under red guarded domes. Down one hall, Reina spots a file—sealed in yellow wrap. Four names. Hers is third.

Nervous yet? Would you read your name? Yosuke tries to take it, but Reina pins his wrist. “Let me.” She tears it open to bright light: it’s not just a list. It’s logs from Project Severance.

They know much now: Kids from lower blocks, marked after exams, sent to labs to track odd neural links. They test how much pain shapes the dream. Long pipes hook in the light as records show tracking numbers. Kaito coughs, glances away. “It’s why I called you. They erased me after… Experiment #7.”

There’s a sound of glass plates up ahead, night nurses in press suits with low faces, rubber seals over their tiny eyes. The group slides from cover. Watch yourself—I’d be holding my breath right here.

They evade one, duck right then left, until a dull clang stops them. Up the next wall is tape striped yellow-black, a lab door slick with cold drips. Reina nods: “This is it.” Yosuke reads every new sign aloud: “No passage. Memory crosswinds.” Reina ignores it, her fingers less steady than usual. aicg-8402-img-2-6a3608100affb.png

Inside is pain and wind. Soft music plays from old walls. Trays line the edge, filled with blank tags. Glass tubes on left edge shine bright. Reina finds Nana tied by the waist with striped thread. They run to help, but she’s not alone—there’s a sleeping girl in the glass, lights running green under cold skin.

Down the main chair is Dr. Yakunin, never tall, never kind, sleeves tight. He hasn’t turned. “Why not ask them if they’d want to live without memories?” His voice echoes as if cast from deep pools. “Or see every dream someone hands them last thing before rest?”

Kaito struggles to face him. The Doctor’s hand moves to a coded switch near Nana’s plug. “You found the heart of it all. Project Severance. Mind retained, pain displaced. Want a trade, Reina?” His mouth coils near a half smile.

Reina takes two steps forward. Her voice cracks. “Let them go. We’ll forget what we saw.” Doctor scoffs. “Not possible since you already carry the code.”

The scene freezes on Reina’s shocked eyes and the slow flash of alarms in the belly of the room. Kaito is in danger now, hands glowing blue at the wrists. Is it possible to carry and hide pain from someone you love, or does memory always return? aicg-8402-img-3-6a360887afcc0.png

Sirens begin upstairs. Reina grabs Kaito. Yosuke calls for Nana by name, but she won’t wake. The whole place starts to quake: Doctors, guards, glass everywhere breaks. The path they came—from vent to room—is closing.

Would you stay for your friend who’s tangled between all past and all new? This is that choice: Do you run for the street, or crack the tubes with your own hands?

The last shot is the code spilling from Yakunin’s hand as he closes the switch and says, “Let’s begin.” Lights flash, the room losing all color but blue and gold. The screen cuts to black. aicg-8402-img-4-6a36088a2588a.png

Next episode: Will Reina break the thread? Or do memories only cut one way? Which would you do?
