The village lay silent at dusk. Shadows stretched along warped paths, hinting that night was more cruel than the day before. Mina walked each step, her hands tight in her sleeves, listening to the lost bell’s echo drift from the old stone church.
Mina’s anger burned low, always focused on a single goal. Bring her sister, Faye, back from the dead. After all, that’s what the witch in the woods had promised. Or did the witch just play with hope? How far would you go, if told there was only one way?
She asked her only friend, Koharu, to follow her out. Koharu was thin and fair, with ink-black hair, worried eyes. “Are you sure? The others, they said the price—” she tried.
“I don’t care about the price,” said Mina. No pause. No breathing room. Words that would haunt her. At the end of the lane, the trees looked like dying hands.
Mina’s mother hadn’t spoken in a week. It was as if Faye’s death took her words. At dinner, silence fell hardest between the soup and darkness. Mina waited until her mother left. Koharu met her outside, holding a worn lantern. “Let’s not get lost,” Koharu whispered.
They walked, soft leaves underfoot, their shadows tangled in wild roots.
The Witch’s Hollow and Bargain
No birds sang near the witch’s hut. Lamps of smoked glass flashed green, thrown by a fire the color of old bruises. The air stung of earth and sorrow.
A figure shuffled. Her shape, all thin bones in torn linen, face hidden, eyes the color of coins dropped in water. “Why did you come?” the witch asked. Front teeth jagged. Voice soft, but not kind.
“I want Faye back. My sister. Please,” Mina begged. Koharu stood behind her—a shield or a witness?
The witch leaned close. Her breath smelled of an old grave. “Everything has a price. Your wish, your will. Are you sure? No turning back?”
Mina nodded, eyes full and huge. Did she think about what she’d pay? Would you?
The witch pulled a brass key tied with red silk. Softer, she whispered something neither girl remembered later. “Go to the bell tower. Open the iron box in the shadow. Call her name during midnight.” She gave them a bottle. Pitch black liquid sloshed inside.
Tower of the Dead
The bell tower bit the sky, black stone crusted with lichen and regret. Each step up rung damp and old. Koharu’s lamp flickered. Mina pressed the key to a side door; cold shrieked through the lock. 
Inside, dead leaves blanketed floors stacked with old prayers, candles long burned out. Shadows settled, watching. Each echo off the stones seemed to wait. They carried the bottle and the key to the iron box. Nails rusted, yet the lock spun with a soft click.
Mina lifted the box’s lid. Inside, just ashes, gray and light as powder, holding the shape of nothing at all.
Koharu pulled a clock from the pocket. It was almost midnight.
Wind clawed at the tower. In tune with the last chime of night, Mina poured out the bottle over the ashes and spoke: “Come home, Faye. Return to me.” The world was silent but for her words.
At first nothing happened. Then the bell swung, with no one near. The hum swelled so loud Mina pressed her eyes shut. It smelled of rot. The ashes grew, shifted, and then rose. Faye’s shape. Not alive, not dead, just standing in old light. Would you look away or reach out?
The Cost Revealed
“Mina?” said the hollow thing, voice shattering on her tongue. Koharu choked a cry. “What’s wrong with her?”
“She can’t stay,” the witch’s voice echoed from a place close in the tower. Or maybe from the bottle, rattling on stone.
“Not like this?” Mina begged, tears start to run.
“To have what’s gone, you give all you dream. Your voice for her step, your memory for hers. A life for a life.” The Witch’s smile was thin, sharp.
After only that, Faye—if that was Faye—began weeping, her form wavering, voice broken as blown glass. The bell above groaned, splintering the last hope.
Mina held on. Cried, “I don’t care! Take it—take what you want!” It started. Words faded from inside, colors faded—loss deeper than tears.
A damp hand pressed into hers. Koharu grabbed her arm. “Stop!”
But the trade had begun. Around them, shadows sped to fill the void, pressing closer, whispering Faye’s name, Mina’s name, old names, lost names. Would you hold on? Would you fight fate? 
Cliffhanger: Touched By the Dark
The bell snapped above the girls. Everything shook in red and black. Mina reached, trying to pull the shape of her sister free. Faye’s eyes, bright and empty, met Mina’s for a moment.
A scream spiraled up from below and joined with the bell’s last clang.
Suddenly everything fell to silence. Shadows pulled toward Mina, leaving Koharu and Faye alone—except they weren’t alone. Outside, in every home, the same whispered word started to rise.
Koharu scanned for Mina. Gone, or changed, her body lighter than spilled air.The last light blinked out in the tower.
