Striking Shadows: The Iron Tournament Prologue

Arc 1: The Bell Rings at Dusk

Riku Okada stood on the edge of the battered tatami, ancient floorboards groaning under each careful step. The cold wind slipped through gaps in old temple walls. Riku’s fists, wrapped in white, had stories only scars can tell. Everyone at Tachibana School watched him. There’s a heaviness to being the youngest. Kaito nudged Jun, whispering, “He’s way too still. Is that focus or fear?”

Sesshomaru-sensei called for quiet with one clap. He started the story. The Iron Tournament, held once every five years, chooses the school fated to guard the Moon Scrolls. Winning means more than honor. It decides which dojo calls itself the old town’s heart.

Riku didn’t flinch as the list was read. His name landed at the bottom. His mother, Aiko, once wielded these scrolls. But she vanished under ‘bad luck’ locals won’t name. He’ll fight at dawn. “For her and the truth,” he murmured.

Meet Our Circle

Masato Shiraishi, smart but quiet, slid next to Riku after practice. “If you stay as tense as you are now, I’ll have to ice your shoulders tonight.” Riku managed a grin. His lone joy – shared ramen cups, calming talk. Mei Tachibana, the radiant team ace, ruffled Riku’s sweat-damp hair. “Don’t hide behind hard eyes. You could scare a wild cat, you know that?” The dojo buzz held tips of fear and pride for all of them.

Readers, do you think past wounds can hurt more than new ones?

The rivals from Kogane Brief lived up to their legend. Ruthless, elegant. When they entered the gym, the place dropped five degrees. Team captain Takeda Motoharu’s stare locked with Riku’s. “Hope you packed a stretcher, Okada.” Riku only lowered his chin. His secret: his right shoulder ached since last season.

First Steps In Shadows

Sensei’s orders: train till fists shake but don’t break. New drills torn from lost styles – crane’s flutter, wolf’s slash. Quiet at night faired little against each yell echoing across shrine stones. aicg-8592-img-2-6a36b5fb988eb.png

‘If I break too soon, who fills in?’ Riku stopped mid-squat, watching stars through broken roof tiles. Masato joined him on the old steps. “You afraid? I’d quit if I cared about that still,” Riku replied. Masato shook his head. “Maybe you should. Might let you actually win.” Their laughter chased sleep from worried minds.

The day’s last hour brought Mei to the river bridge. Water slid red with dusk. “Funny. Bet half the town expects us to flop,” she said. She gave Riku a steady look, one mixed with hope. “But maybe not you.” He had no answer.

Conflict Sparks

At sunrise, the dojos faced off at town square. Rowdy, tired crowds circled, arms crossed and bets whispered. Judges wore blue bands, counted drop of sweat, drop of pride. Riku stepped barefoot on stone next to Takeda. An old moon silvered the rooftops.aicg-8592-img-3-6a36b6545ebba.png

Kaito, anxious and sharp-tongued, lost first bout for Tachibana at Match 1. He spat dirt. “Ref’s blind,” he cursed as the crowd roared. Next up, Jun. A true brawler. Bloodied nose but eyes clear; he got a win, evening odds. Team shout followed: “Alive till finals!”

The arc slowed, tension thick. Riku waited at the rope. Every part of his plan shook alone inside. Could you hold out under so many eyes?

Development: Riku’s Test

Match 3. Gate creaks. Riku walks out. Takeda waits, loose as rain. “Care to go easy?” Takeda taunts. Mei from the wings: “Don’t trust prides who smile!” Riku squares off, right arm aching. The bell claps sharp.

The opening moves blur; hard shin blocks, arcing knuckles. Riku shifts from wolf style to sudden crane, trying not to show the pain. Sesshomaru-sensei on the edge, not blinking, mutters to Jun, “He risks showing too much.”

Takedowns fail. The crowd sees Riku’s shoulder drop and whispers start. “That Okada kid—he’s weak on the right.” Takeda grins, going for the gap. Mei yells, “Move your core!”

Clash. Riku blocks high and with one hand traps Takeda, swinging his rival in a feint the sensei never taught. The move nearly pays off. Then Takeda slips inside, hits Riku’s shoulder fast.

Sharp pain blinds Riku. He drops. Ref counts slow — one, two, three, four. Masato calls, “Stand up! Not now!” Riku thinks of Aiko, her words: “Bend, but don’t splinter.” He digs toes in and stands.

‘You’re up just to get thrashed?’ Takeda hisses. Riku looks at Mei on the edge, blinks back hurt. He shifts stance completely, relying on the wolf, not the crane. Sesshomaru sensei notes: “He swapped his center. Only one who trained in winter storms would use that.”

Sweat beads. Takeda gets anxious—lashes out too wide. Riku twists, low, and by memory alone, sweeps both legs. Takeda stumbles, shocked, and the crowd gasps.aicg-8592-img-4-6a36b6e7b32a7.png

Cliffhanger: Final Breath

As Riku catches his breath, judges wave stop. Dispute starts—Kogane yells it’s a slip, not a win. Tachibana won’t let it go. Muscle from each crowd shoulder in. The fight’s less about points now, more about pride, old loss, hidden truths.

Someone yells from the houses—a woman’s voice, clipped yet sharp: “Let the match finish.” Heads turn. Riku spins, pale, body shaking, as the pitch matches how he remembers his mother sounded.aicg-8592-img-5-6a36b69f0372a.png

Nobody looks ready to leave. The bell waits to ring. You? Would you have strength to listen—just in case it matters more than victory?
