Iron Pulse: The Storm at Dawn

ROBOCITY never felt safe. Leon Saito always knew this, long before he joined the rogue mecha team called Side Frame. But at sunrise today, steam and engine noise paved the war-path straight through his honest doubt. The city called him to act. What would you do with that kind of fear?

Leon just needed an answer—peace from the quiet roar in his head. The Side Frame were scraping together what remains of old steel, casting scraps into fast, light strike mechs. Miko fired bolts to tune her unreliable loader, the tinny clash echoing behind ruined glass. “Ever get tired of fixing stuff all the time?” she tossed over her shoulder, not looking up. “You can’t fix what’s broken for good.”

The strange thing: everyone in Side Frame stays. Jun, quiet but sharp, stuck so close to Leon that their radios buzzed the same static. Yuna nagged about safety on runs, but backed you up in any zone no matter the heat. Still, they all kept secrets. Even after fighting together for months, scars lingered.

By 9 AM, Leon stared at news feeds on the warehouse wall. Radical unit Grim Bolt raided Sensor Tower last night. All systems for emergency gear went down. “They want the whole city blind,” Yuna spat, her fists clenched.

What would happen this morning when city alarms failed and Sentinel squads couldn’t scramble?

Mission command whispered through the headset, voice cracked, “Power core on Tower 7 just lost—possibility city block-wide blackout. Side Frame, you’re nearest.” Yuna gave Leon a firm nod. No joke—this was the big one.

The street outside their hiding place zapped alive with angry drone lights, policing the main runs and marking attack corridors. Jun loaded up gear. Leon climbed the old rig, fingers slipping on chrome controls. He closed his eyes, mouthing a hope that sounded thin even to him.

Crisis hit faster than anyone expected. Grim Bolt’s fury sent a shock wave: three mammoth mecha carved through Block V like it was wet cement. Smaller, swifter Side Frame suits darted the alley shadows. Engines shaken, alarms wailing as guns went hot. Do you ever wonder what you’d say, shouting orders into chaos, praying each strange sound wasn’t your own death call?

“Don’t split unless I say,” Leon ordered. Jun just grunted and lit up the repeaters, covering Side Frame with ratio-tuned frequency hacks. Rockets busted holes in three walls beside them. The strange relief: each scared breath proved you were still alive.

Now, in Sector V where mangled streetcar tracks and burnt neon signs lurked, the Side Frame launched their defense. Dust sprayed behind sleek suits. Cameras flickered when missile shrapnel scored their cores. Leon’s frame, old but sound, took blow after blow but still danced under fire. The hum in his ears was a song of movement, nothing more.

Side Frame’s chief engineer, Erik, linked up from his rear dock under a slab of steel: “Move slow and light. Don’t get hit twice like you did last week.” Leon laughed, “Give me better armor and I’ll try.”

The locals tried to clear, but three people were trapped in a collapsed tram beneath Dynamo Unit’s feet. Yuna screamed, “Cut left! Innocents down!” They made the call to save lives over holding the line. Would you cut your attack short for strangers you barely knew?

Laser-fire blazed along dark alleys. Leon’s suit threw its arm through a crumpled bus to keep Jun clear of the blast. The pain of that hit shook his piston bench, warning lights flared red, but it didn’t matter—Jun was safe. “Don’t ever do that again,” she buzzed, clipped and direct. “Next time, you take the safe route.”

Miko’s frame backflipped off a column to blind Grim Bolt’s John-type scout, frying its sensors with microwaves. Digital snow filled Leon’s vision. They hacked feedback noise right back, blinding half the field. A desperate plan, sure, but perfect in the moment.

Can you imagine how many thoughts barrel through your mind, deep in the grind of battle? Reality turns to instinct, sweat to focus, doubt into the lens through which you trust or fail.

Even as the fight rocked Street Forty-Four wider open, the worst news broke: a new Grim Bolt super-unit, Reaver X, burst out from the deep tunnels. Six stories high. Hoisting an odd power core that thumped with green light. Its voice rang robotic and flat over emergency bands: “Yield or witness full side-destruction.” Everyone stopped cold. Even command balked on open comms, stuttering.

Leon’s hands shook. Don’t let your squad see doubt. Do something. He pinged Yuna: “You’re with me. Jun, run flanks with Miko and feeden mini-drones into its intake.”

What gears would be turning in your own chest watching that horror stride in? Would you find bravery or only absence?

The squad’s next half-hour streaked past: rockets, chaff clusters, looped wireless jamming—all pressing Reaver X, barely scratching its hide. Saito thundered up a web of broken beams, zigzag over deep ash, diving in too tight to dodge. His suit lost comm uplink—he couldn’t hear anyone but his own breathing.

Jun barked a coded SOS over fallback channel 9. Erik roared from base camp: “That core’s unique, way off fusion ratio. If it popped, five whole blocks go.” Leon caught the word ‘ratio’ and fixed his eyes dead forward. “So cut the link main, force a cold shut.”

Standing above the powered tram line, Leon shoved his rig into Reaver X, gripping at its spine while alarms screamed. Sparks rained like steel rain. “Yuna, now’s your shot!”

Yuna leapt from above, frame gripping into casing seams, snaking high-watt lines down into Reaver’s core. Everything flashed a bright, ugly blue so hot it erased color for an eye blink.

What was left when your suit stops shaking, burnt keys left numb under battered gloves, hearing only static in your ear? Failure or hope, counting what made it and what didn’t.

Cameras ground back to common feed. Reaver X might be crippled, but other units pressed the attack. Side Frame limped back, battered. Leon peered over the shattered city blocks and one thought rose sharper than pain: something far bigger was arriving behind Grim Bolt. Some force none understood. Even the side screens piped up with garbled static: “…Megastructure inbound…identity unknown…Prepare defensive action…”

The dawn’s surfacing licked fire off bent metal as smoke consumed the western edge of ROBOCITY. The heroes caught their breath—just for a second.

Any ideas what happens next, or who watched from that fire-swept bridge? Sometimes answers hide behind burned steel skies.
