The city of Sora drowns in sunlight each summer. Kids line up on overpasses, peering down at the gleaming circuit that splits the night. In this shonen arc, Riku Honazawa, the 16-year-old transfer from remote Oshira, stares out over his new neighborhood, clutching a torn flier: “Sky Apex Open — only the brave fly.”
Riku’s speed addiction started young. When he moved here, it wasn’t fame he wanted. He missed the buzz after the finish line, the wild joy in his chest. But Sora’s Apex isn’t his street back home. It’s sleek, full of brash local legends, squad captains, pro teams, and jeering fans.
He isn’t alone. There’s Midori Katase, mechanic with nimble hands and clubs in her boot, always one step ahead. She believes Sora racing lost its soul. Jez Akaya, blunt but calm in turns, watches Riku retune old karts by the ramen shop. Even Kaito Ueno—Sora’s top junior, always nodding coldly—spots the way Riku never looks scared at 260 kph.

Kaito stays one lap ahead as the qualifying rounds tighten. The youth crowd senses a shift. Riku, the outcast transfer, doesn’t play fast to win. He drives for that perfect silent second where only the tires sing. On the wire, the others gamble:

Some sessions end mid-crash, braked by quick thinking. The sound of impact haunts Riku all the way home, questions swirling: what does fair mean among the desperate? Is honor just for practice?
Riku grows rougher, keener. His street method shines in fickle rain, snatching unlikely wins. Soon, Kaito, outpaced for the first time, offers a challenge that changes everything: a midnight race, winner-take-all slot in the finals. Kaito’s facade finally cracks. He isn’t the robotic prodigy Sora claimed. Under stadiumers’ neon spray, grudges and dreams collide with raw, aching needs.
The night before, Midori tweaks the carb intake. “Lighten your hands next lap. Apex isn’t a sledgehammer race,” she whispers. Jez catches Riku fiddling with a torn locket—his brother’s from the icy north, lost last year on a backroad crash.
Kaito meets him on ridge summit. “You want it all? Then show what you have left,” he dares quietly.
Start guns echo into the sky. Two souls barrel past one hundred marveling faces—past cheating rivals, into curves mapped only by instinct. Riku lets instinct lead. Old pain, new hope. Midori’s words echo: sometimes you can’t outmuscle loss, only outpace it.
The episode closes as headlights streak higher, skipping fast toward the finish. Cam drones pan, tendrils of tire dust swirl over the city. In a flash, Kaito edges forward—the screen cuts to black. The arc lingers on one question: did racing give them what words couldn’t?
