Midnight in Asteria, a last bell hounds the wharf’s edge. Ash lingers, shoulders bunched, clutching the small pendant he won’t show the others. He checks his old map, fingers tracing places scarred and burned.
Is faith or promise driving him now? What would pull you into risk like this?
Up walks Mika, awkward and fast. She smells like burned herbs, her arms dotted with raw scars. “Stop worrying,” Mika grumbles. “You freeze and I’ll carry you through.”
Kyo isn’t far behind. With him, there’s quiet. You can almost taste how sharp he is. From him, a short nod. No words.
The three cross to the storied Iron Maze, where daylight never lands. Townsfolk sneer and dare them. At the gate, rusty metal, bent and patched with glass, curls into a makeshift barrier.
Legend claims the Iron Maze rearranges after every storm. Once inside, you leave pieces behind. No one argues. Ash keeps his secret pressed between his palms. Mika sets the lamp down, flame low. Kyo points to a brief clear path, then vanishes behind a folding fence flap.
The ground is wet from earlier rain. Their coats drag. Metal beneath is slick; hands and knees scrape over it. The silence presses at the team, only lantern flame pierces it.
Mika shrugs at a torn sign—ONE PATH, NO GOING BACK—but doesn’t slow.
The World-Needle, the old power source buried at maze heart, is a whisper at first. Ash glances at a crevice, faint blue glow in its crack. If he could fix it, he’d end the outage in a hundred homes. Kyo steps up then, catching Ash’s wrist. “Don’t fall for each trap you pass.” Voice flat, face jagged.
What would trip you up, trust or fear?
They hear old wires shift and snap. A blade swings, low and wild. Blast of water arcs through a vent. Mika is quick and shoves Ash down, rolling herself low after. Kyo frowns, blood splattering down an arm from a ripped sleeve.
Sharp teeth in the wall slide closed behind them—too slow, yet close enough for panic to thump down in their chests.
A moment of rage breaks out in Ash. He draws air and howls in vain at welded iron. The echo cracks and stalls. “This quest is yours, not just mine,” Mika snaps, knuckles gone white, shaking with cold.
Deeper now. The air changes. It holds metal and rain and old secrets. Each bit of junk crouches like a trap. Kyo finds a thin crawlspace, enough to push through if you’re willing to catch your ear and your sense of what is straight and up.
They argue as they squeeze—Mika trusts her senses, Ash pleads to stick to what the map says, but Kyo’s staring right through the wall ahead, knowing it will bend.
Past three countdown switches, a new room opens up—wide, rounded ceiling, cables like iron snakes stitched overhead. World-Needle’s first sparks hum at center. Shadows skitter, something waits in them. A moving shape? Flat and too tall, like cables wrapped a person hook to toe. The temp chills.
Can anyone fight what isn’t flesh or code or smoke?
The found spirit—Ven, the old Watcher—in this place he’s all sensor, touch, cold air, blue shine in the eye. He floats above ground, mouthless voice patterning with white light. To freed Ash he speaks: “Prove your pain or prove your worth. Only need earns right.” Kyo stands rock-still; Mika just leans forward, waiting for a blow.
A trial. No hint on rules, only string-by-string pain. Ven brings forward painful visions: Mika’s old failures, Kyo’s worst lost friend. Ash’s mother—seeing him walk away before the blackout hit.
None can fake their way out. The price? True fear, layered loss, sliced and shown right back.
Slowly, each fights through. Mika shouts and cracks a metal pipe. Kyo has one tear crawling at his jaw, but won’t bend. Ash finally shows the family pendant. He’s failed and tries to mutter out a wish—wanting only enough power to fix things, just once.
Ven fades, approving.
Scene resets: maze sighs open, blue glow dims, but the trio finds a lump at their feet. Warm, humming, covered in years of dirt—World-Needle at last.
As Ash picks it up, the Iron Maze rumbles and realigns. Kyo’s eyes dart. Mika calls, “We have ten seconds to find air!”
The escape path slams close—a fresh trap. Lights stab their eyes. Maze bounds up, crazed with new barriers.
