Synopsis: Maze of Echoes – Part 1
Miya Arisawa knows Ouseki isn’t called “sleeping city” for nothing, but she’s restless anyway. It’s midnight, third Friday this month, and the wind outside snaps at the old brick buildings. Miya fiddles with her untied shoelace while warm radio chatter hums from her scanner. Is she only hearing static, or did someone just say her brother Reito’s name?
She grabs her camera, jug of cold coffee, and a stack of old photos—the ones police delivered after Reito vanished last autumn. Her one hope is that next case will lead her to a clue. Sometimes, cases choose detectives. That’s Miya’s excuse, anyway.
The heavy old door booms as she walks out. Street lights throw bent shadows across shopfronts. A woman in white stands below a flickering lamp. Miya blinks. That’s Yumi, her scandal-chasing best friend and drama club ace. “You heard too?” Miya whispers. Yumi just nods, then they both shiver.
Yumi tugs at her sleeve. “The whispers on the scanner… it’s everything, Miya. The Mansion’s hidden room is real, and tonight, it’s open.” She drops an envelope in Miya’s hands. Inside is a feather. Black as pitch. Miya has seen that strange throwback before—in her last nightmare before Reito vanished.
They walk silent through frosty hush. Rain falls, thin and cold, as the radio in Miya’s hand buzzes again—this time with clearer, slow words. “Obsidian… Mask… Room E4.” Both girls gulp as thunder booms behind them.
Next stage: seek the truth.
The Puzzle Begins
A taxi blinks past. Inside sits Renji Miohara, the new transfer student. He looks bored, but keen eyes skitter over everything. Renji’s got his own secrets—stash of notebook papers on local myths, and a dead-flicker tattoo he only hides on rainy nights. You ever met someone you didn’t trust until they smiled? That’s Renji. 
The trio sets off for Zaido’s Antiques, the dusty revenant at city center. That’s where keys pass hands, or so rumor goes. Mariko Okubo—the owner—pretends to dust a carved bird mask, while Reiji (her son, not to be confused with Renji) organizes clay dolls. It’s these twisted-lipped toys that started the “Maze of Echoes” urban curse, or so kids sneer after daylight.
Miya: “Did this come from the Obsidian Mask?”
Mariko keeps her eyes on the broom. “Are you sure you want in? Things vanish for good in the darkness.”
Renji digs in his pocket. “Let’s see the mask. Slides for trade.” He puts down slick plastic slides. Even Mariko looks up twice.
The Lead Unfolds
Your own memory ever feel patched, fogged, a certain corner always left untold? Peeking into Mariko’s candlelit backroom feels just like that. Stuffed cages and jars crowd shelves. Between flickers of matchlight, they spot it: the obsidian mask. As they draw close, an unsettling pattern shines—rooted, fractal details like spiderwebs.
Yumi leans closer. Eyes wide—and her breath comes shallow. “Someone is wearing it again. Every mirror in Ouseki town is covered for a reason,” she whimpers. Miya clutches the feather. Inside, she’s certain she hears giggles echo, soft and mean.
Renji mutters, “Midnight room. Did you two hear about it too? Isn’t it a mistake to keep chasing riddles you can’t solve?”
Miya grits her teeth. “Good detectives don’t quit. We chase them, or regret it.”
They find a second mask in a side drawer, brittle and warped. A newspaper clipping tells how “Obsidian’s last owner was found missing on the very night Reito disappeared.” Is the next clue buried deeper down, or is it all smoke and mirrors?
Clues in the Mansion
At crescent moon’s peak, the city’s north gate stands open only for an hour. They slip through. The Takanai Mansion looms, pale stone wet with rain, hunched against needles of grass. Miya flashes her torch. Locked windows. Scraped initials. Something dark shifts behind the cracked glass on the top level. Are you the kind to peek inside, even if part of you doesn’t want to know?
The air in the foyer smells like mold, metal, and cherry pits. Old music plays—a record stuck in ghostly loop. An aged cravat lies below a painting of what might be Reito, though his hair and grin look just off. Yumi’s voice shakes: “There, the door E4. Past the mirrors.” 
Down a cave-dark hall, walls leak. Each step echoes. They count the doors: E1, clawed shut; E2 and E3, more warped. Behind E4 is only muffled sounds—static and then voices.
“He’s still here,” says Renji, more to himself than to Miya.
Miya’s heart pounds: “Can you hear it, Yumi? Can you feel where he is?”
Yumi wipes her nose. “This is all kinds of wrong.”
Inside, it’s not a room at all—it’s a hall of night-green mirrors. The mask lies on a vanished stand. Reflected, twisted, smeared.
Then: someone stands up on the other side. Reito?
The Cliffhanger
Lightning cracks—and Reito’s face flashes in the jaundiced glass. Panicked, Miya runs forward, smashing the closest mirror. She bleeds from her hand.
Yumi lunges to stop her. “Don’t trust what you see! It’s all illusions, just echoes! Didn’t you hear Mariko’s curse?” 
Renji strides into the now-glass-littered room, ignores the pain, pulls the mask free from between splinters. From below, the floor shakes. A low, familiar voice chokes: “You finally came back. Leave by dawn or join me inside.” Is that Reito—alive, trapped, or something worse?

They glance at each other: fear, hope, and loss flicker behind tired eyes. The only certain truth? There is no turning back now. What cost would you pay to bring your loved one home?
This is only part one of the “Maze of Echoes” arc. Each step leads deeper into unanswered puzzles and half-lit clues. Will Miya dig up what she seeks, or fall too?
