Shadow against the Spire: The Masked Trial
Episode Synopsis
Yuto Kamishiro lays on his roof long after lights-out. The cloudy night sky pushes down. He clenches his Hero Academy emblem, feeling the past week bite at him. What does it even mean to be a hero?
Tomo steps into the dorm’s hall behind him, her voice hushed. “You’ll catch cold, Yuto. Or trouble again.”
He shrugs. “Just thinking stuff through. They’re picking teams for The Spire trial tomorrow, right?”
Rumors flicker across the first-year chats: tonight’s Spire is ‘the Special Mask Match.’ No one trusts the silence. Even the heavies like Jirou look tense. Will your nerves jangle before sleep when final exams hit?
The next morning, students gather at the tower base. Coach Hazawa calls roll. Everyone is suited up except Michiko, who rushes in late, homework still in her teeth.
Team leaders stand front and center: Yuto, with hands stuffed in his uniform pocket, Tomo with her usual steel, Jirou grinding gum between his teeth, and Ayaka in her battered jet suit. Hazawa keeps it short, pointing at the giant doors. “Rule’s simple. Team that places the flag on the spire door wins. You’ll get twists.”
No one expects the pipes hidden in fog to shriek. Masked reapers in black burst from behind ruined pillars. Each is twice the size of Uta, the tough in class D. Hazawa’s lips flicker. “By the way – fail here, and your practice counts will cut for three weeks. Watch yourselves.”
What would you do at that?
Bare-handed, the first team sprints forward. Tomo barks orders, planning high and swift. Yuto’s eyes narrow. He catches the tiny speaker peeking under his headset foam. Someone is feeding him clues. For what? Michiko tugs his sleeve. “Yuto, don’t listen to anything… It’s rigged.” His mind sparks. There’s sabotage afoot.
The first teams stumble. Jirou blocks two reapers bare-fisted–but fakes being hit after seeing flashed signals in shadow. He slinks out for a side mission, then never returns. The judge grows quiet. Half the first years lose track, bumping into each other in the clammy mist. Yuto’s mind pinwheels. Is this all just a trial, or has something infected the Academy?
A strange pair stalking the spire corridors grip the flag half-burned, ignoring Hazawa’s barked warnings. Tomo faces down a masked reaper, throws her body low, and trips up a sensor pad beneath the stage. Sirens blare. Doors slam shut all over, splitting teams.

Everyone chokes in the thicket. Ayaka and Michiko are locked behind glass. “Yuto, your code is all over! What the hell?” Ayaka’s fists blast the shields with blue light. Tomo slides her phone to her palm. There’s a broadcast in codes. “Who’s doing this?” she mutters.
Halfway up, Yuto faces off with a warped digital clone in his own colors. It knows every trick. He flinches near the final stairs, every voice echoing in his ears, urging him to fail. “Take off your comm, Kamishiro! Now!” shouts Tomo over the system link, breathless. He rips the earpiece out. Silence falls.
Classes scatter in the spire, half caught, half freed. Coaches stomp the gym floor. “No one’s to leave. System’s up. Trust no message.”
Ayaka, bruised but awake, grins. “So that’s the real test.” Tomo sets her jaw.
No one gets the flag. Officials in bright jackets storm each floor, eyes closed against masked faces. Is the hero training real, or has it warped around deception? Alerts buzz in student’s hands. “Fight tonight, or freeze.”
Who’d you trust when your academy traps you?
The final shots: Yuto stands beneath the spire’s blinking beacon, face masked in shadow. Something moves near the base. Tomo, hands in fists, asks through grit teeth, “Will you break this or play along?”

In the mist, two more entities unwrap slick black masks. “Let’s drop the act. Kids, your class moves tomorrow.” His own code plays back along Yuto’s comm. The spire lights flicker. Night spills out.
Blackout.
End of episode – but whose test was this really?
Are you chasing your own future, or just following planted signals? The question hangs.
