The wind hit hard against Valor Academy’s iron gates on the first day of the Final Trials. Sen Ishida looked up, nervous, as banners snapped and clouds twisted over the high walls. This morning, the teachers spoke only in low voices.
Did you ever feel tense before a hard test? Sen did, but not because he doubted his ice powers. He just didn’t know when—or how fast—his only friend would show, if at all.
Class 1-D in the Arena
Momo Yanagi, sharp-eyed, leaned over and tugged Sen’s coat. “Stay awake or I’ll ice you myself,” she whispered, but with a joke. Titan-bound Nori Fujiki grinned, stretching his arms. Across the field, rival classes eyed 1-D with real intent. The match started with cannon-fire thunder as barriers flickered up, sparks of quirks in blue and white.
Curtains Part: The Unseen Test
A speaker barked: “Final challenge: Shadow Blitz. Working as a group is optional.” Two seniors had vanished into dark glass cells. “Find your hostage—and the one among you hiding a secret.” That single line lit a jolt in the student body, teachers too. Some shifted in their seats. Was an actual traitor among the first-years?
Sen’s own voice sounded strange, hesitant: “Do you think it’s—one of us, Momo?”
She frowned, watching the monitors like her life hung there. “I never thought so before. But I guess anyone could be pushed.”
Powers Clash, Personal Stakes Rise
Sprints echoed as students ran maze corridors. Nori threw up barriers that jolted drones aside. Momo froze sensors, buying time. There came a blinding light from Shogo Iba’s photon burst: he shielded Sen just in time as heavy beams hit ground. “Watch it—teamwork, people!”
Sen heard a voice. It wasn’t Momo or even Nori. He thought for a moment: Did that sound like himself?
This match grew dark. Storm clouds set edge, sunlines gone. Raijin, electric top-class senior, hid somewhere in the north end maze. Had he taken a hostage for real? Or was that another trap laid by the teachers? Sometimes, stories inside stories can fool good people. Ever found friends kept secrets that big?
Tension Builds: Mystery in the Labyrinth
Twenty minutes later, most classes couldn’t find even a shadow. Sen and Momo found more traps—a sealed vault scrawled with letters that spelled Ishida’s own name in black paint.
Nori burst in, tense and shaking. “The lights in south-omega flickered. Could someone have cut the power on purpose?”
Momo bent down, her voice brittle. “Sen, did you touch any system?”
Sen’s answer stumbled: “Not me. I only iced a panel for cover.”
A camera spied from overhead. No faces showed clear. There were only shadows, blurred outlines.
Mirror Room Reveal
Past traps, the team burst into a chamber made of smoke windows. Momo went first and found herself facing six mirrored images, each showing a member of Class 1-D—except one held a mask and bled what looked like light instead of blood.
Nori’s panic rose. “Is that… Shogo? Or is it uno of us?”
Momo drew a deep breath, cold steam on her lip. “Unmask him.”
The True Motive: Test or Treason?
In another room, heroes trained for this—the unseen turns, the switch between real and bait. A voice from a wall speaker: “Sometimes trust is the best power. Or it breaks you.” The voice didn’t sound much older than them.
Outside the arena, students and teachers watch silent feeds. A log showed five class-techs failed within ninety seconds of that storm hitting.
Sen hesitated, palms sweating so cold it left marks. Is he the unwanted suspect? Or is that part of someone else’s trick?
The Confrontation
Hands shake. Sen calls out: “Whoever’s behind this, why us?” For a moment, silence. Then an echo comes from the glass: “You trust blindly. Isn’t that how students fall?” The figure unmasks—it’s Hideo Tenma, bright but odd student transferred from Delta branch last spring. Some remember whispers about his parents in the crowd.
Hideo steps out. Voice soft, but heavy. “Show me you can face this. I want to see true heroes—not useful sheep.”
Momo steps up. “We’re not pawns, Tenma,” she says. “And I’m done playing with shadows!” She freezes the glass; with a crack, it falls away.
Crossroads: Loyalty Torn
Sen steps up with shivering hands, but doesn’t use his powers. “If you want a world with trust, then break the wall—outside, not just here.”
Most teams would stop Hideo, turn him in fast. But Nori, arms flexed, stares Hideo down. “I get wanting truth. But we do that as a team.”
The clock ticks.
Cliffhanger
Final siren rings. Seniors rush in, Nori bodyblocks two. Hideo backsteps… straight into the hands of Raijin, who’s now lit up like a torch. Raijin smiles oddly. “Sometimes, new storms start with silence.” Monitors flicker. Blackout. Siren returns—lower, angrier.
Momo mutters: “That wasn’t part of the test.” Then a real alarm, not a school trick, goes off. Steel shutters close over the exits as the outer walls shake from distant impacts.
