Prologue – The Dream That Shakes the Tower
Night haunts the stone halls of New Rendora. Wind bashes stained glass, blowing in dust from the Bonefield desert. Chiro Nozuki, age sixteen, stares out. He’s tired, spirit weighed down. His father’s last words repeat like an ache: “Monsters can’t end war. Humans can’t win without them.” Again and again, his nights come with a whisper: “Prove it’s not true.”
Chiro grabs his notebook, sketching the strange shadow that darts past his window. Last night it had claws. Tonight, it laughs. His sister Nami pokes her head in. “Why’re you up? You saw another shade?” He squeezes his pencil, not wanting to worry her.
The City on Edge – Power Rules, Peace Fails
Nami, half awake, sits on his bed, brown hair in a mess. “If it’s that thing again, tell Master Lei. She’ll listen.” Chiro grins, tired. “I can’t. Grandmaster Treaty’s got another human-faes meet tomorrow. Chaos at dawn if something’s off.” She sits up. “Then what? You acting like him now?”
City patrols twist the tight streets. Ogre coins clatter, traded for sausage at a cluttered stand. Walls of beast-iron separate the three Quarters: Human North, Monster South, Mixed Zone between. Some say peace is a word that always breaks at borders. Why care, right?
The Dissonant Gate: Monster Rife
Master Lei calls her pre-dawn meeting. “This isn’t time for sleepwalking! The treaties shake, so do the black gates.” Chalkboard drawings of a gate west of Rendora – moss in the cracks, small glyphs scratched deep. Monsters can’t swim between their zone and ours anywhere else. Only there.
“There’s been violence in Mossridge,” she snaps. ‘Not wild monsters. Someone’s pushing monsterkind together. That means war on both sides. Chiro, tell me what spooked you.’ He shares the window shade, cheap sketch – spiral teeth clamping something much, much smaller.
“You want us to believe you saw the New Spawn?” Avi stares in doubt. Chiro flushes. “You ever seen monster teeth like these? Ancient, twisted. Not wild, not even classified cataclysm class!” Tense silence. Could you keep calm if people doubted a thing you saw that scared you stiff?
Half-hearted Allies: The United Monster Front Emerges
The United Monster Front is just a name weeks ago, tossed around at spice-pals pubs. Now strange banners hang at border shops – ‘Humans hurt us. Monsters protect!’ Rumor says claws from old lines, pack-leaders who lost turf after treaties, now mix with thrall and beast for new gain.
Documented attacks. Winged wolves guard a mutant croft. Sharp green moss twists into spikes near human zones. “We’re not and shouldn’t be enemies!” Aslan argues with Lei. None listen enough. Layer by layer, friction grows. Nami’s hackt friend Yori says the group gloms newbies with wild rumors about hidden fangs in the Peacekeepers.
Cracks Form: Equivalent Fears
No losses yet, just borders prodded. Chiro visits Ogre Market with Nami. Suspicion floats. Is walking here allowed? A three-eyed fox eyes his badge. Nami mouths: ‘don’t draw attention.’ She buys frail trinkets. “That’s people now,” she insists in low voice, jewelry in her pocket. “Everyone’s afraid.”
Would you try to see things a different way when the cost might be friends, or maybe your safety? Monsters lope past, stares cold, ears flicked back. Color drains from Chiro’s knuckles.
Unfaithful Shadows: The Bonefield Ghost Moves
Rifts tear wide open the wall near the Black Gate. Lei’s attack team, baton and steam shields ready, moves at dusk. Tendrils shiver from the other side. Twin shadows – mirror twins, gold eye and silver eye. Yori gasps, “Those aren’t lost spawn – that’s King Oron’s mark!” She hacks old cams. What she uncovers stings soon: someone opened up Rift-Six banned a decade back. “We all agreed never to do it. Only council has those codes!”
Chiro pushes forward. Faces flatten like he already took blame. “They think you did this. Human boy near Black Gate, new monster fronts, code breach! Everything you say makes it look like you planned this!” Nami flinches. “Tell them we’re not rigging the gates.” Did you know everything you say can work against you?
Betrayal Inside: Fragile Loyalties Shatter
Evening, thunder soaks the ceiling tiles above their dorm. Yori shivers, white flashing her face. Monsters riot in South Quarter – rumored leader “Skynot” slips into an alley with shamen, plotting. Aslan texts Chiro. “Where are you?” Too afraid? Out for himself? But Nami corners her brother. “Trust me or lie to me. This goes both ways.”
Chiro pleads, “What do I do if they blame us? Grandma says, records hold. ‘We don’t trust gates. Just those on mission beside us.’ Who watches with you in the dark?”
The Final Gambit: Those You Fight For
The team gets cornered. Not just in law but philosophy — who started what? How much proof? They follow a dark path between burnt prayer posts, skirting the old wall. Lei confronts the Monster Front alone – standoff shaking hands. “Drop the spike stone. Chiro didn’t summon you. We won’t open the gate further.”
The opposing front isn’t neat, clean, baffling. Monsters, beast-bundle survivors, thralls in shirts pried from markets, Druths decking feared badges. No one trusts anyone, not really. Only violence, or talking, has any shot now. Door flares with old glyphs, pulsing heartbeat-pink. Chiro and Nami walk toward street’s last empty part.
Cliffhanger: Something Wakes Beneath the Gate
Gate howls echo up. Sirens scream. Rift-Six breaks open, an unseen skull-faced horror pried loose by desperate hands – but instead of anger, twisted mirror peace glows in its dead socket eyes. Chiro faces it. Nami grabs his arm. Underneath bone plains and teeth, the Root Whisper rasps, “Who fights, wins? Or who talks?” The city chooses in flames, as forms shape themselves into sides once more.
