Blades in the Mist: The Secret Lantern Festival
Prologue: Hidden in Fog
Dawn slips through gray fog, barely touching the roofs of Lotus Village. The air feels cold and damp. It’s quiet, almost too quiet.
In a tiny hut, Akira rolls out of bed. His messy hair joins the shadows. Akira isn’t loud or large. He’s just a small ninja trainee, hungry for respect.
Have you ever felt like you’re only seen when needed? That’s life for Akira here.
The Festival Looms Near
Upper House sends new tasks. The Lantern Festival is next week. Old Master Jun gathers his best. He names Hiro (the town’s hero), Reika (quick and wise), and… not Akira.
Akira slumps. He wants a spot. There isn’t time for self-pity. He asks his friend Sota, a chubby, smiley scroll runner:
“They’ll never see me for me.”
Sota grins, unwrapping a rice ball. “Then make them. But do it your way.”
Isn’t it strange how advice always sounds simpler than it feels?
A Shadowy Visitor
Night comes fast in Lotus. Reika finds Akira skipping stones by the river. She looks nervous.
“Heard anything odd downtown?” she asks.
Akira shakes his head tightly.
She lets out a long breath. “There’s word some trade delegates are being watched. Master sent Hiro, but I heard him whispers about outsiders.”
Akira can’t stop thinking about it. Why would anyone spy during a festival?
The Reliable Old Tengu Mask
Akira strolls over to the temple, pulls the old tengu mask from under a bench. It belonged to his dad, gone for years.
Sliding it on, Akira mumbles, “Now or never.”
Whose Footprints?
By the fish market, short boot prints cut deep into new mud. Fresh, but fading west. Akira follows to the Echo Bridge.
A hand lands on Akira’s shoulder. “Ready to snoop?” It’s Sota again, in a patchy hood. They laugh.
“Thought you’d run home to eat more.” Akira teases.
Sota pouts. “C’mon. Let’s see who stalks our traders.”
A Dangerous Eavesdrop
Near the sake shed, voices murmur through the cracked wall. Akira hears “night attack… main hall weak.”
Sota stares. “What kind of thieves plan a move now?”
Akira nervously touches his mask. “Not normal thieves. Have you seen that white snake tattoo before?”
History of Snake Clan Returns?
Flashback hits: Master Jun once spoke of the old Smiling Snake Clan. Their badge? White snake on blue. Lost decades ago… or so he said.
Akira Makes a Plan
Akira scribbles a short note. He runs back to Master Jun’s home and throws it under the bowl by the porch.
He turns to Sota, raising a brow. “Sneak with me through banquet tunnels. If we can stop them, maybe they’ll finally know I exist.”
Sota nods. “After, let’s eat twelve rice balls.”
The Labyrinth Tunnels
The ground smells rich, cold. Akira and Sota crawl on all fours through gaps left by mice. They avoid sharp roots, crushed lanterns, old bones.
One tunnel opens behind the festival’s main hall. Masks and lanterns wait there. Perfect chance.
The Lantern Gambit
Lanterns glow softly, gold and pink. Akira notes which shadows seem strange.
A hand twitches—a Snake thug tries to slip inside.
Akira motions to Sota: “Block the south door after I break the lights. Trust me.”
Sota’s only answer is a big nod and some shaky breathing.
Lights Out
Akira throws a rock at the main candelabra. Light sputters, smoke curls everywhere.
The masked Snake ninja mutter. They scramble, lost. Akira swings in behind them, tackling one to the ground.
Hiro bursts in through the north entrance. He looks surprised but gets to work, taking down another invader. Master Jun, old but still fierce, links arms with Reika. The Lotus ninja press forward.
Akira’s First Victory… Or Is It?
The Snake Clan melts back. Akira volunteers to chase, mask on tight.
Sota grabs the white snake tattoo, tugs till cloth tears. He flashes a scrap. “Got proof!”
Trouble Isn’t Over
In the chaos, Akira hears a faint whisper behind the curtains:
“We still have the lantern core. Signal at sunrise.”
Eyes wide, Akira faces the crowd. They’re proud and worried all at once.
An Unexpected Cliffhanger: Message in the Flame
The final lantern won’t go out. Inside, smoke curls around a slip of red paper. Master Jun reads it and frowns.
“A signal to more Snake enemies. This doesn’t end tonight.”
Akira Finds a Purpose
By the riverside again, dawn leaking in, Akira and Sota eat soggy rice balls.
Reika walks over, quiet. “Didn’t know you had it in you.”
Akira looks east, wind soft on his face. “Neither did I. But they’ll need me again soon.”
Want to guess what secret was hidden in that red paper?
