Echoes of the Hidden Keep: The Ruins Beneath Narasoko

Nara Saitori only spent time in the archives to dodge chores, but a week ago, he saw a cryptic old book with strange sketches. Nobody else in Narasoko even glanced his way — not the other teens, not the elders who guarded history’s secrets.
“What’s this got, a ghost recipe?” he snorted.
But the sketches kept pulling at him. One night, he packed his bag, told no one, and slipped among the statues toward the mountain woods.

The next sunrise, leaves wet, hands cold, Nara found himself at what the book called Yonsei Hold. Blocks of ancient stone stood like broken teeth in a circle, moss alive on them. Jun, his prickly cousin, appeared from behind a wall. “You really think there’s treasure here?”
Nara stared. “Jun? I — did you follow me?”
She shrugged. “Somebody better have your back. And you talk in your sleep, genius.”

Every story they’d heard as kids flashed up now: monsters, curses, voices over still water at midnight. The cracks in the rock looked gold with age. In a half-collapsed door, old script ran along the edge. Nara snapped a shot and sent it to Mitsu, his only real friend and language nerd.
Ten minutes later, Mitsu’s call buzzed. “It’s a warning. It says: What is found must sleep, or the echo wakes them all. Is that supposed to be scary?”

Jun raised a brow. “You believe in curses, Nara?”
He didn’t answer right away. Maybe he believed in luck, or history repeating. Maybe he just liked the thrill. Do you buy into curses, or would you press deeper for the chance to grab something lost?

Inside, it smelled like stone after rain. Jun led, Nara right behind. They found rare gear: a bronze mask, a box that opened with cracked levers, coins burned with seven-pointed stars nobody used now. Jun grinned, eyes greedy. “You sure you won’t touch anything?”
Pipes crossed each corner, carvings hidden behind thick vines. Jun’s hand tapped her pack’s side: Do we go? Unless the light from Nara’s phone cut out, they had time.

Nara noticed quick signs. Scraped dust. Scuff marks. Had someone else been here? Footprints? Not exactly fresh, but only some weeks stale.

Down a short stair, an opening faced black space below — the old heart of Yonsei Hold. Nara went first. Rock slid in the dark. Before they could reach the bottom, the floor gave by half an inch.
“Careful!” Jun snapped, grabbing his coat.
An old trap bit down from above, stone teeth closing. Jun jumped clear. Nara crouched low, heart pounding. He laughed, shaking, when the trap reset.
The map drawn on the book hadn’t shown anything like that.

Relics lined the chamber’s walls. Masks, old musical pipes, faded cloth. Jun picked up a braid ring; something shimmered between shadow.
Click. Light burst — not phone light, but old magelight from under a slab. It made every relic shine blue-white.

“Don’t touch that,” said a third voice — harsh but soft, unsteady from the dark tunnel.
A man, not young, peered out, clothes streaked with ruins’ dust. He held a short staff with red beads bound at one end.

Nara stood in front of Jun. “Who are you?”
The man said, “Takagi. The Hidden Watchlive. But you don’t care about law, do you?”
Jun frowned. “We’re not looters —”
With a laugh, Takagi beckoned. “You woke them.”

Sudden, the magelight flashed. Two shapes rose from the floor, almost just fog at first, but steady. Ghosts, or tricks.
Every half-serious rumor about Narasoko’s past slithered through Nara’s chest. ‘Echo wakes them all…’

One ghost, a girl in old court dress, mouthed slow words: “Where was my home? Do you call me?” Her face, delicate. Not unfriendly, just lost.
Jun stepped close. Brave, but scared. She nodded at Nara. “Ask what keeps her here, cousin — loud.”
Nara’s voice stuck, but he tried. “What happened?”

Her answer blew cold over him. The Hold sealed after she wept three days. Only the echo of her grief let her spirit rest, but someone broke that echo with noise, with dug stone, with iron boots — ages after ages.
Was it Nara, Jun, or another before?

Mitsu called again. Signal dove, broken with static. He caught pieces: “Leave now. They awaken … all of them … curse won’t wait…”

Behind, Takagi placed three coins on the floor, spoke five words hard to catch. Gold light rippled — a sigil swam up across the dark.
Walls shifted. Slabs folded shut behind, one by one. The ghosts became clearer, the girl no longer grieving but angry.
Caught between fear and awe, Nara dug at the old book. Was there another riddle, a way to ease her?

Do you think he should hand over a relic and beg for passage? Or would you try to reason with a faint soul in their own haunted home?

Jun hissed, “Is there a way through?”
No easy answer. Takagi’s staff drew a red line in the dust — and the ghosts swarmed the three.

Every way out was blocked, save a drop through a narrow chute carved for offerings. Nara guessed at the symbols — jumping might mean a safe fall, or bones.

Hands went tight around the ring Jun found. She pulled him with her. “We’re going. Hope you know how to land!”

The last flash Nara saw — the angry ghost girl hiding tears, one final warning echo were: “Who remembers our names? Tell them. Or you’ll never leave.”

Blind flight. Down stone chute, voices swirling up the shaft.

The episode ends on black: “To awaken what sleeps brings its own curse.” Nara and Jun surface in the roots below, tangled among ancient coins and old scrolls. Takagi’s voice drifts, far, but not gone. Are they really safe? Or did something follow them?
