Echoes of the Forgotten Vale
Mika’s boots cross a sun-dappled plank bridge at dawn. His knees still shake. Six months ago, he’d feared wild rabbits. Now he’s team leader in Juniper Squad, one of Etrune’s best exploration crews. His scrawny shape makes folk scoff, but watch him dodge a trap or charm a wolf—thought twice yet about quiet boys?
Waiting at the gate, Alise cleans her arrowheads with a cloth. Akio, their gearhead, juggles a battered compass and three odd stones from past trips. Lyra, crystal-bond mage, chats up a merchant selling red velvet apples. All seem in good fret and jest, yet the job is what’s changed in town. Three teams missing past the Glass Lake. Old stories tell of the Forgotten Vale, with shapes at night and deep mist hiding shrines lost for years. Everyone’s nerves are raw. Mika studies the mist-shrouded east hills. “Are we sure?” Alise asks. “A hundred percent? Because I saw the list. They’re sending us because they don’t want the top crew lost next.”
“Got nowhere else to check. But we don’t rush,” Mika says. “We do this Juniper way. We keep notes, stay in sight, no style points, everyone gets back.” Akio grins, shaking bright blue sand in a gloved palm. Lyra hushes her, frost drifting now around an anxious crow perched above. With gear packed and nerves a bit more set, they pass under the gate.
The route to the Vale is all thorns, slick steps, and echoing groans from deep in the earth. At a ruined bridge, Akio taps runes to feel for weak planks. Lyra senses odd surges. “Smell that air? Like snow and lemons,” she mumbles. The funny part: a stray cat now follows them, black but for a ring of white above its tail. It purrs when Alise hands it dried fish. Who brings a pet on expeditions? Yet the stranger it gets, the safer the team feels, like lucky coin.
One day in, rain sideswipes camp. They find footprints deeper than boots can make. The size throws them. Mika runs a test—his shoe gone missing for the effort—and they learn the tracks loop at sharp angles no man can walk. Akio jots notes. “I don’t see bear-leaps here,” he says, low voiced, “They’re sort of—backwards?” Soon, Lyra finds a broken tile in the grass, cloud symbols fading. Possible relic? Nobody sleeps long, as night buzzes with whispers. What’s the loudest thing you’ve heard in dead air? For the Juniper squad, it’s footsteps not of their own.
Dawn on day three, mists cling to their legs. The crew finds half a camp collapsed by black-stem plants. Mika and Akio find a charred badge, etched with sun, star, and a child’s smile. It’s from one of the teams. “They got this far, then silence.” Lyra throws pebbles. Her heart’s not in her jokes, Mika sees. 
He doesn’t let fear sink him. He checks for pulse-traps before he lets anyone sit. Even so, the Vale isn’t going to give answers easy. Forking east, the sky tints gold—I mean, can you paint dawn clearer in memory? They meet an old stone arch, scarred as if clawed by glass itself. Alise finds dried blood on a willow root and sighs. Are they safer with each new clue, or do signs pull them deeper into something meant to be left quiet?
“No injury marks,” Akio says, sketching the shapes. Lyra wants to try the new spell. Crystal in hand, she waves and—there’s a jolt, a sharp drumbeat under the moss. The white-circled cat runs yowling toward the tall grass. Mika races after. He’s faster than his own panic. Out there—the missing team’s kits, boots stacked, hats faded by rain. But no bodies. No damage show here, not even smeared ink on the scattered reports. So what made them drop gear and go? 
When Lyra picks up one kit, music chimes—low, like wind through a kettle’s spout. Fog rises, thick and cold, cloaking Mika and splitting him from the rest. It’s so cold he chokes. He fumbles—do his friends still stand near? “Stay put, call loud! Light everyday gear!” he shouts. What else do smart leaders do when the mist isn’t just weather?
Minutes are stretches of fear. He steadies his second-skin lantern, waiting on answers. Voices flicker: “Mika—here!” “Over this ridge!” But they’re warped, rising from spots no light shines. Is it real? Would you move, just on sound?
Mika lunges ahead too soon. The cat loops him back toward clear space, head butting his ankle. Dropping to his knees, he gathers focus, listening—then, through haze, Lyra’s spell sparks blue, drawing the group near. “Only when four are linked,” Alise whispers. Akio clings to his shoulder. The cat gives a sharp hiss.
As the blue sparks swirl, darkness pulls in at the edges, shaped like hands in water. Forms echo the shapes of old friends they’d lost. Lyra gasps. Alise draws an arrow but doesn’t shoot. Mika shouts at the mist—voices crowd back, alternative echoes: “TURN AROUND, LEADER JUNIPER.” Veins shudder in his throat. 
The party’s gear rusts at their hips. Lyra grips his elbow and jolts him from the horror. “Trust—the cat, trust the route,” Akio stammers. Mika stuffs the badge and odd bits from fallen crews in his pack and races the group away as the mists recede. They stumble, hands tight. The air shifts. Sun breaks through the leaves.
This would wrap if answers meant peace, but the cliffhanger crashes in sudden as thunder. They check Mika’s loot, and see a stark note: “Started hearing howling past the well. Days looping—I can’t feel pain. If we go further, bring the old key.” Alise’s lips form a small ‘o.’ Do you let curiosity drive or run? Do you press forward if you know your name might join the lost? As the credits roll, Juniper Squad stands in broken light at the Vale’s mouth, watching the cat as its eyes turn glass blue, points them toward the hill’s old well and whisper force: “One more step?”
