Episode Arc – The Shattered Lake and the Serpent’s Eye

The storm wouldn’t let up as Renji stood at the lake’s dark edge. Last week, he’d have run the other way. Now, he squinted into the night, waiting for the call that had haunted his sleep for days. Shiori, his oldest friend, shrugged under her hood, shifting her bag. “If you’re scared, you can still go home,” she whispered.

Renji pretended not to care. Truth was, he needed answers. His younger sister disappeared one summer night two years ago. Ever since, the local myths forced their way into his head. Wasn’t it strange? How every tale led back to the Black Lake. “I’m not turning back. Not this time,” he told her.

Behind them, Jun’s broad frame broke from the trees. Leaves clung to his hair. He tried to joke, but the tension in his voice said he felt it too. Together, the three took slow steps through mist hugging their ankles like cold snakes. What stories had you heard growing up about haunted lakes or vanished kin?

The lake wasn’t just dark. It reflected moving shadows that didn’t match the trees or clouds. Each legend they dug up in the dusty school library pressed in now as living facts. Renji clutched the old map found in his sister’s worn journal. At the center stood the Serpent’s Eye, a ringed island no one’s found since anyone alive can recall.

Shiori dropped to her haunches beside the old shrine pole at the water’s margin. She lit a lantern, wide enough it banished the fog just a bit. “Three red stones form the eye,” she murmured, squinting into Renji’s map. “Wasn’t there a song about it? Your sister sang it for us at that sleepover once.”

Renji tried to remember. His voice cracked. “In the eye slumbers fate. Wake the snake, pay the weight. Remember?” Jun mimed shivering, twisting a stick in his hand. “And then everyone vanishes. Oh boy. It’s not too late, you know.”

None of them moved away.

The expedition took them into chill black water, packed into Jun’s small rowboat. Branches snapped overhead in the wind. Across the lake, lights glowed for brief seconds and winked out. Were they watchers? Did something live in the mist, or worse, did it live beneath rippling black water?

Midway to the middle, the lamplight found a shape beneath them. More than a log. More than fish. Renji had seen enough old scrolls to know the shape matched drawings of inked dragons. Dragon or lake snake? Isn’t it odd how things from stories sometimes match real life’s edges?

The boat spun, pitch and yaw, making the map slip under Renji’s knee. Shiori held the light above her pointed face. Her fear showed. Renji squinted down and saw the Eye’s stones beneath the lake. Their color, impossible—a blooming red that rippled back up as green.

Their voices fell still. The mist pressed closer, and the shape below jerked toward them, unhurried. Jun tried to turn the boat, but it seemed caught on something. The moonlight, thin as hope, drew the faint mark of scales brushing close to the surface. The weight of legend dropped over them. Shiori inhaled sharply. “It’s moving,” she hissed, shaking.

A low sound bubbled from beneath, neither hum nor growl. As the water shuddered, threads of memory wormed through Renji’s mind. He remembered the warning. Didn’t they say the Eye woke to a question? He asked aloud—quiet, desperate: “If you have Megu, give her back. Please.” Mist wrapped tighter until only Renji saw the swirling form. One huge serpent’s eye opened in the depths, glassy and red. Is there ever a right way to speak with a myth?

The serpent’s gaze seared with both pity and warning. Words rang in their heads rather than ears. “To claim what you lost, bind what you are. Truth for memory. Will you dare?” Shiori covered her ears. Jun fell silent, jaw clenched as if fighting tears.

The mist spun faster and the island rose. The stones broke the lake’s glassy skin with a hiss. Land that shouldn’t have been there now jutted in the middle of the night-blind water. The air grew warmer and faint fireflies lit the path forward. Jun whispered, “We should head back. This isn’t for us.” Renji could only step forward, hope and fear knotted in his chest.

What would you have done in that moment?

The three trudged toward the exposed path. Each felt the weight of the Eye’s trial—one must stay, or they all would be lost. Schisms from their pasts sparked; old fights, untold truths, secrets heavy as stone. Rain lashed the shoreline and the boat drifted away. No going back now.

At the island’s heart, a shrine shined in colors they couldn’t name. Renji’s sister’s voice oozed from the stone, half-singing, half-weeping. “In the eye, the dreamer sleeps. Upon waking, secrets keep.” The girls—Megu, somewhere in sleep or spirit—needed them to pick: give their own truth or give up the last chance of rescue.

As the episode arc snaps to a close, Renji whispers a secret he’s hidden for years—something tied to his sister’s pain. The stones flare, the shrine cracks, the island shakes underfoot. White fire blinds them. Just as Megu’s face flashes in the swirl—eyes wide, reaching—Renji shouts for his friends. Are they still at his side, or were the legends too hungry all along? Fade to black. The echoes of old stories hang heavy as unanswered questions. Who gets out when the Eye judges your secrets?
