Survival Adventures Arc, Part 1
Ten boats leave the port before sunrise. Out on the water, there’s no land to see and the thick fog eats all signs of direction. The fishing town, Kawa, risks all in this ocean. Why? For salt-white pearls—each one gives fortunes to simple folks, but the fog brings spirits with silent steps.
Our story trails the middle schooler, Hinata Mibu, thin, sharp-witted, and quietly desperate. She rows for her father’s boat alone, teeth set as sea air pricks her cheeks. Beside her is Jo, a runaway stray with burnt ginger fur and a chewed ear; he’s stubborn, like fishhooks. Under Hinata’s seat, their only map sits wrinkled between bits of her late mom’s last letter—a hint she hopes will explain where the pearls first came from.
Crowded around the old pier, fishermen avoid eye contact. Someone mutters, “Don’t stray near Dead Lotus Isle. Not this week.” The air grows chill. Hinata presses ahead because the week is nearly starved, and she owes old debts on her net weights, too.
The tide slides beyond normal shallow points and is soon rough. Words ripple in the wind: kids singing a lost work song. But it’s just echoes. Is it all just tricks? You ever stand out in fog where you can’t see your own hand? Hinata clutches her oar, jaw set, as Jo grumbles low.
Mid-morning, an odd shape bumps their hull. Not driftwood—not a whale—they find an old turtle with barnacles clinging to its shell. A red string trails from its back, wire-tied in impossible knots. Jo snaps, but Hinata grins. “Don’t be rude. He got trapped, too.” Craving calm, she frees the string, and the turtle hovers, as if unsure whether to trust her. Then, beneath the water, she sees strange glowing lines—like the paths in her mom’s stories—or is it just the sun glowing off rocks?
Rest, food, stale rice. It dawns that their compass spins wild. Hunger sets in, like it does when things go quiet before big trouble. The turtle lingers nearby, trailing them deeper into the Reach. Jo perks up, hackles high. Weird, right? Animals don’t do things for no easy reason.
Soon, voices in the shifting grey shout: two other small boats drift their way—Aya, the rival who mocks Hinata at school: “Still playing muddy hero?” Behind her, her little brother scowls, green seaweed stuck to his chin. He hurls it at Jo, who sulks off to nap near the tackle box.
<p.“You chosen pearls over sense?” Aya needles. Hinata laughs, once. ‘Better than waiting by nets that come back empty.’ Yet deeper into the bank of fog, wood thumps wood—something truly big now rises below them, and Jo starts barking clear orders at shadows with howls. The boats twist round as oily shapes break the water. The path turns wrong, maps soaked.”
People have stories for storms at sea—ghosts, lost gods, invisible wrecks that call out with flickering lights. Hinata jumps right in to fix a jammed rudder, Jo feet planted for balance, tail stuck high like a signal. The others shout for her to cut her rope. ‘Not yet,’ Hinata says, teeth grit. Is the treasure worth it if you come back nothing but bones?
This sea cuts stories two ways. Who trusts hope inherits risk. But sometimes, ghosts aren’t dead—they just need someone to hear. Near dusk, an ice-cold hand touches her heel—the lost ring Hinata believed vanished years ago pops loose from the thicket below the boat. She gasps, chilled, uncertain if the hand belongs to a dream or the fog itself.
The cliffhanger? Behind them, a bell tolls—a sunken bell, deep and clear. All boats freeze. Is that land ahead or a reef of broken spirits? Aya’s eyes meet Hinata’s: truce or trouble? Do the pearls come from the past, or are they about to create a new legend—one with names no one dares mention by next moon?
