Synopsis
Rennai Kusa stands atop the mossy stone lantern near the village gate as the sunrise cuts through pale morning mist. She often starts her day here, listening. Not to the birds, though. She listens for anything odd, because that’s how small adventure seeds are sown.
Her best friend, Nyuki, ducks under her feet, notebook in hand. “You dream about that Prism again?” he asks, brushing dew off his sleeve. She’s not keen on his tone.
“No… but dreams might know things,” Rennai shoots back. Still, there’s that nameless thrum in her bones, just like the rhythm she heard in those strange dreams about the Prism. Why does she want so badly to find it? Glory isn’t the word. There’s another pull — will you ever have a day like this again?
Fogwood stretches beyond the torii, older than stone or rain. Local tales claim a Lost Prism is buried under its roots, tied by a founder’s oath not told in full. Who gets to find treasures anyway? Rennai’s heart buzzes when she asks Nyuki and shy Mika to set off after the Prism. Both stare at her. “Fogwood isn’t safe,” Mika warns. She runs her finger over the old hushmark amulet hung at her neck. “Night falls. People wander. Sometimes folks don’t come out quick.” Wonder creeps in, even as their village is now wide awake in morning sun.
They pack: water, hard candy, rope… and a single wooden dice said to answer riddles. Nyuki can never quite get a grip on that dice—sometimes he saw it change faces, right when he glanced out of the corner of his eye. Mika puts the last onigiri in the bag. Their trio chooses the right-hand trail into Fogwood. It should lead to the Whispering Stump. Once you cross that, do you ever look back? The Prism has been hidden for two centuries, after all.
“Don’t let sprites trick you. Their voice can spin you in circles,” Mika mutters. Nyuki closes both eyes for one deep breath and follows. Shoji marks line tree trunks here — some with warnings, some with odd math equations. Are those even written in any known script? Your guess is as good as Rennai’s.
Hours slip by with roots muddying every step. The woods prick with chill. Then they hit the first puzzle. There’s a ring etched in flat stone at the path’s bend, carved tightly with numbers and twisted shapes. “Try the dice,” whispers Nyuki. They toss it in. The dice lands on six — for a second, the air stirs and a path sparks open, glowing for a breath. Every treasure wants a keeper, and maybe this is their first test.
Would you trust a clue from a magic dice? Rennai grins. Mika looks—scared is too soft a word. The truth? No one’s completely calm. As the path glimmers, lights flicker, quick and unsure, threading them into an odd little knot the deeper in they walk. That’s when the voices start. At first, it sounds like wind over bones. You lean in, and it’s words: “Three truths untold, one wish bought. Tread lightly.”
The group pauses. Nyuki gulps. “What if we don’t want a wish? What if we want to just see?” Feeling his own pulse, Rennai says, “Even the trees want secrets. Let’s earn ours.” You see, soft edges between fear and want braid together, wrapping the treasure in fresh myth as every step brings old rumors to life.
As dusk thickens, black branches press overhead, moss closing all sense of time behind them. Mika glances back, trembling. In that moment the hushmark amulet grows warm, glowing from below her throat. Right under their path, old carved stones — unnoticed till now — tell strange halves of a story. Half in their tongue, half lost to lichen. Everyone tries to piece the riddle. Seven animals, six eyes, two finders never left. Does any village teen believe they can solve riddles where adults stumbled? Should they?
With hope, the dice rolls again. Now it sputters and vanishes, sounds rolling quiet as leaves. Something is coming. Could it be another trial or — something worse? Even as hunger and dark bite at their boots, Rennai grabs hands, lips set tight: “If someone had to find it, might as well be us.” This is how all promises crack open, just as all legends do.
Echoes rumble deeper in the roots. Quick shapes flicker past, never quite seen. That fractured shrine in a break ahead stands – silent, watching – and there’s a shine, purple in starlight, tucked just out of reach behind curling vines. It could be the Lost Prism. Or bait.
But before the trio can slip closer, a shadowy figure steps between them and the shape. Light and dust swirl. Not a person, not quite – her feet don’t touch the leaves, her eyes hold old storm answers no child should learn at dusk. “Only lost things may claim the Prism,” the specter intones. “What have each of you left behind? Speak, or wander.” Everything shakes for a breath; roots shift, stamping out retreat.
Is this test too costly, even for treasure? Just as Nyuki stammers an answer and Mika recoils, the prism flickers, reflecting back sorrow and hope knotted together in three sparks of color — blue, yellow, pink. Rennai dares the first step into the unknown, every heartbeat weighted with all she’s never said — or lost.
The arc lets a hush fall, cliffhanger safe where sun can’t pierce—a trial about to be judged. If you were faced with naming what you’d lost, in front of strangers or friends, would you dare say it out loud? Their answers—if spoken—will shape not just their path, but what Fogwood remembers, or forgets, when morning comes.
