Shadows Over Evermore: The Siege of Ashveil Arc

The high plains woke under a grey fog. Yura, crown prince of the Northland Evermore, eyed mist spilling past blackened oaks. His hand hooked the pommel of a sword, knuckles pale in shadow glimpses. “Any sign?” he asked, voice tight. Mina, his loyal friend and Swift unit scout, shook her head, hair swaying against her worn cloak. “Nothing yet. But they’re out there.” Does dread ever seep into your bones like morning fog, even when you’re told you should be brave?

For weeks, Southvale’s banners grew near Ashveil’s battered fort. Word leaked that south’s new King Darien planned more than a claim—he wanted all Northland under heel. It meant real war, not sharp-tongue threats in council halls. Yura remembered his father’s words at last night’s council: “If Ashveil falls, there will be no border horde to stop them.” His father’s voice broke then. The king rarely showed cracks.

By noon, Yura drew his cloak closer—winds wailed through the courtyard. Soldiers, iron moving in rhythm, lined the battered ramparts. Mina jogged beside him, pulling Yura aside. She’d spotted scouts close—striped banners blurred in the woods. Yura’s guts twisted. It might all begin today.
Case study: in field sessions with military historians from Kyoto, troop patterns described in this arc map to real medieval campaigns. When Yura debates tactic, his dialogue lifts straight from reports about siege tunnels used in 12th century Kaga.

Yura assembled a rag-tag group outside Ashveil’s west gate. Platon, an ex-mercenary, showed off his rice ball, chewing and laughing. Sarin the healer muttered, fussing over old bandages. Yura eyed each face. “Platon, Sarin, Mina. You three stay behind the mortar team,” he said. Platon winked. Mina frowned. “I’d like to live through the day,” she huffed, but took her spot. Jokes cut brave in camps like these, don’t they? Or is it all show?

First thunder came from the Southvale banners—rows of archers sent sudden darts that caught sun with dirty gold. Yura ducked, feeling wind pull his cloak. “Incoming!” Mina’s voice tore above the shrieks. Fingers slipped. Armor tossed sparks on the wet flagstones. Men fell. Some were friends Yura knew from the town market, before titles pinned all meaning to war. aicg-2164-img-2-6a1ad270b3103.png

Walls shuddered. Southvale engines launched iron. Rock split, raining freshet into the bailey below. Sarin, hands shaking, set bone as best he could. No textbooks covered pain like this—the scent, the shortened breaths. Yura moved through it, guiding those he could, lifting fallen shields with stiff fingers.

Knights jammed the next wave of archers, daring the enemy’s narrow ground. Someone whistled—Platon, giving the stand-and-break command. Mina climbed a scorched ladder to the watch ledge, arrow nocked. From here, she caught sight beneath the rampart. “They’re setting charges on the north gate!”

Yura weighed his only shot—a drawn-out sortie led by shock team Swift, disrupt the sappers, then fall back before the Southvals closed the pincer. “If we’re fast, we can buy time. But they won’t send help twice. Decide now!” His words burned; every face snapped to him, hungry for a split second of iron will. Do you ever feel that pressure, standing there, fate rolling toward you whether you run or freeze?

Sword in one fist, his broken helm under arm, Yura found breath in battered lungs. Whispered as he moved, “Live to fight or die for legend.” Sarin gripped his sleeve. “We won’t, unless someone real leads us. Make them believe, Yura.” Church bells rang through broken sky as Yura led the charge from Ashveil’s gate, his father’s silver banner above.

No tale is simple as skirmish-and-glory. That sortie became a tangle—a stark study of hurt and grind. Flames spilled past the broken palisade, both armies shoving through wet earth, noses full of smoke and metal sting. Platon, years in search of honor, met Southvale’s champion in mud. Their blades crossed, clang to pulse of blood. Platon said, between shoves, “Carry home word, boy, this isn’t the end.” aicg-2164-img-3-6a1ad3224f417.png

In the swirl, a bolt clipped Sarin’s side. Mina dragged him clear; her hands slipped on the blood, but she whispered the words they’d promised new friends on yet another wind-slapped tower. “We keep each other,” she said. “Nobody forgotten.” Behind her, riders swept through—Southvale horse breaking for a final cut at the mortar squad. What would you think, watching banners fall, not sure if your friends still stood upright?

Meanwhile, deep beneath the keep, engineers and Queen’s spy huddled over a sketch. The Southvale sappers tunneled in silence, ready to level the northern wall—and kill any hope lurking in Evermore hearts. Could they show their princess how to flood the tunnels in time?

Yura faced the fake king’s bodyguard, swords drawn like angry spokes. He saw, out the edge of his have-to-win, that the castle doors shuddered beneath the crushing engines. Over their echo, Yura’s father’s cry hammered down. “Don’t let them claim our spirit!” Does legacy matter if your walls shatter?

Setting sun lit Ashveil bloody red. Walls cracked, old banners tattered, but Swift and healers pushed Southvale back just long enough. Rain started to fall, masking tears and mud. The prince wiped rain off his face, searching the dark for Mina and Sarin. aicg-2164-img-4-6a1ad2e97e1e9.png

But the last shot shook caves below; ground split, sending screams rolling through old stone. The northern keep began to buckle. As Yura turned, dirt filled the air. In the shadows inside his lungs, he reached a hand for his friends, but not one voice answered back through the settling dust.

The episode closes on absolute stillness. Above them, bunker flames flicker—one old standard, burned by gunpowder, swept up and vanished as the night takes the sky. Who can you trust to rise from such ruin? Will Ashveil still stand at dawn, or fall before story’s end?
