Lanterns of the Forgotten Vale
Liria wakes at dawn. Today, if rumors are true, she may find the path to the vale—a hidden forest lost for ages. Old tales claim ghostly lights float there. They say they lure those with regrets.
Do stories draw you in, or turn you away? Liria packs her bag and checks her staff. She sighs, shakes long hair back, and heads out. “Dace, you coming?” she calls.
He grins from the wagon roof. “Left before sunrise, remember? Come on, race you to the split road!”
Last night, Grandmother warned them. Old Ava always does. “The vale takes lost souls. What’s drawn lost never comes back whole,” she said.
Liria remembers, but her hope burns brighter. She seeks any hint about her brother Eldran, who vanished on a blood moon years ago. Nobody else dared to follow. Liria isn’t most folks.
Yuel joins at the stream. Restless, sharp, she doesn’t trust magic tales. Does everyone need proof, or does belief give stories strength?
Misgivings shadow each laugh. Tales told and warnings gnaw—especially with Eldran’s locket again found in her bag at odd hours.
Dace and Yuel bicker about the best path. Dace votes for narrow trails—”You only find fey if you take risks!” Yuel would rather face wolves than tricks of fog and fey.
The forest floor soon glows in twilight, shade laced with silver marks. First hints appear on decayed oak. Liria’s step slows, and her heart jumps. “That symbol… it’s like the ones in sage books. Shall we try or not?” She glances at friends. One nod, one sigh.
A familiar bell toll splits the calm. The group follows by sound instead of sight. Winds stir mad wildflowers. Dace mutters about ghosts to keep from looking afraid.
Suddenly, a lantern shines near an old, stone path. Blue in hue, pale and strong. Ribbons of mist curl from it, swirling shapes that almost look like hands. 
They step close. Images twist—the outlines of people mix with light. Yuel stares. Is it all real, or are they dreaming as the vale muddles their thoughts?
Liria remembers lessons. Folklore warns: don’t follow, unless you have a wish worth the risk. She wants to call out to the light; her voice shakes. “Are you lost too?”
The lantern lifts, floats deeper in the woods. Behind it, shadows flit. One moves like Eldran used to—hesitant, then quick. Liria runs ahead before anyone agrees. Leaves stick wet to her boots as if grasping to hold her back.
Soon the trees are thick and close, fog pressing down in heavy layers. Branches stretch shapes and faces in gray gloom. As Liria gets lost, Dace and Yuel hurry to catch up with frantic steps.
Things seem off. Dace points out that the compass spins useless now. Their torches barely hold back the haze. Yuel grits her teeth. “This is wrong. Turn around? But she’ll be gone if we don’t press on.”
The lantern dims, flare pulsing in time with heartbeats. Voices echo: “Who seeks lost kin beneath faded boughs?” Liria’s answer croaks out. “I only want to bring him home. I need him; I’m tired of saying goodbye.” Would you be ready to face memories you kept pushed down?
With each word, the light twists and brightens, growing teeth and eyes, faces flickering on its side. Ghosts we’ve wronged or cherished form a circle—a passage demands a price.
Dace warns, “That thing feeds on stories. Give it too much, and you won’t want to come back.” His hands tremble, but he taps Liria’s shoulder. “Don’t lose yourself, promise?”
An outstretched hand forms from cold light. It beckons sharply, gentle but urgent. All three cling together, thinking what matters most—what’s worth the attempt?
Beyond, the forms in the circle pull back. One face, so much like Eldran, steps from the gray fog and blinks with hope. He doesn’t speak, not yet, but points behind—a portal, ragged at the edge, leads father into vale’s heart.
Underfoot, roots twist with tart bloom. Beyond the ring, a deeper green shines—a garden and ruined altar left for hungry dreams. 
Liria crosses first. She reaches out, yet fingers only brush something cold. “Will this cost us? Is there no going back?” she whispers as Eldran’s figure almost smiles.
Yuel stoops to lift a small page fallen on the moss. There’s writing, but it shifts when she stares. Sobs echo—are they her own or the vale’s memory?
A test hangs, unspoken. The lantern shudders; wind wallows. Liria stands, alone at the bridge. Behind, the wandering wisp returns to cold, staring, hungry ash. Time slows around her. 
As the sky yawns low, the vale speaks in all voices at once. “Leave what can’t be returned, or pay in memory and days. Did you come for truth, or only hope?”
Liria faces Eldran’s echo. His hand touches hers at last—solid for a blink. Will she dare the next step if he can’t return as he was?
Right at this moment, the lantern bursts bright enough to blind them all—and when the light goes out, Liria finds herself alone. It’s silent. Eldran’s locket in her hand is open, holding a twitching spark of blue fire.
Behind her, nothing stands—the garden, portal, all friends, even trees, are gone. She’s somewhere new, a world split between day and mist. Her next step won’t be taken with friends, or with a clear way out.
