Specters in the Music Room

Specters in the Music Room

Have you ever heard a piano play itself? Yuji has. First time—after summer break, the last week before classes started. Empty halls, air so hot you could smell the old dust. Then came the ghost. But let’s back up.

Yuji Tanaka hates tests, loves guitar, and spends more time in club rooms than at home. He started the Paranormal Club at Hagiwara High, not to hunt ghosts, but mostly to hang with his pals Kanae and Riku—and because he bet he could scare them. Kanae is quick with a logical answer. Riku? He says he saw a faded lady by the locker room his first day there. No one believed him, back then.

Just two days in, Riku’s voice shakes as he bursts into the club. ‘Guys, piano room’s open, but there’s no one inside.’

Kanae rolls her eyes. ‘Buildings creak, you dork.’ She’s always first to call bull. But Yuji grins. ‘Let’s check it out.’ Even he doesn’t buy it—until he smells roses that aren’t there.

Their first trip to the old music room, room 217, is uneasy. Sunlight wavers. The tuning fork on the shelf vibrates by itself, no breeze. Yuji says, ‘Ghost, give us a sign!’ Shuffling in the far corner. The ceiling cracks. Kanae frowns, steady but grim. For the first time, everyone is quiet.

That day, legend comes alive. Over steamed buns when the bell strikes noon, an old club flyer turns up in Kanae’s locker. The list of officers looks torn right after a name: Junko Hoshino. No details, no class year, only, ‘Musician wanted: must love Chopin.’

Around sunset, the board by the gym is covered in locker graffiti. Every scrawl says ‘Play for us.’

Should Yuji run for it? Or keep chasing clues? You have to wonder—what would you do? They choose to stay.

Kanae starts her own dig. She talks to Ms. Otani, who’s been at Hagiwara since the FIFTH head principal. Turns out the club’s advisor in the ’90s wrote up Junko’s last music contest herself. No one admits what happened after that spring. The hallway chatter is a pile of half-truths: Junko was shy? She won? Maybe doomed love. Everything sounds like an old song on repeat.

Yuji, stuck with his clumsy sketches of a guitar ghost, draws out the room. ‘If the legend is real, the piano itself has a secret. Give Riku a reason to come back at midnight? Be honest; would you stay away, or does this sort of thing pull you in more?’ He pulls out his tape recorder and rummages in his bag for the club’s only piece of arcane gear: some dowsing rods Riku won in a UFO arcade last fall.

Kanae joins. ‘I have my doubts, but those rods actually twist sometimes.’ She starts logging cold spots and tugging at sheet music kicked under the grand piano. Every page is blank, pressed smooth as glass. On Riku’s dare, they listen—not much, just the soft brush of broken keys, like lost raindrops. But Yuji’s tape, once played back, gives chills: it’s not their voices. Someone hums a tune, over and over—sad and right at the edge of hearing.

The night rounds ratchet up suspense. Another question—ever heard a voice in the dark you know you shouldn’t? Their ghost isn’t a sheet or rotting bones. She’s like the scent of roses after rain—unreal.

They split into shifts. Riku stands guard at the stair. Two doors slam. Lights flicker—classic, but terrifying. Yuji stacks chairs by the grand piano. Kanae reads out the torn program again, looking for a code or hint in the listed song: ‘Nocturne in E minor.’

Sudden bang from under the piano bench. Then humming stops. Yuji’s breath comes short. He swears he hears: ‘Play, or none will leave.’

All of it is weird, but believable. Could three teens sort out the hidden regrets? Next, they scan old yearbooks in the library basement. Layer after layer of stories come up. At one page, a girl’s picture is crossed out, pencil pressed so hard the paper split. Right away, the roses hit them again. Everyone is on edge.

By now, the club is knee deep in chills and dust. Late night—almost 1 a.m.—the school is thick with tension. Yuji dares Riku to play a chord. He tries. Keys are stuck, but then notes flutter. Not a mistake—a real tune, matching the ghost’s humming.

The group gasps as the atmosphere grows sharp and electric. Sheet music bursts free from the piano’s slot. The notes are handwritten. ‘For Junko—play this for peace.’ Kanae looks pale. She says soft, ‘Should we do it?’ Yuji nods, picking up the music, his hands trembling. Is this nuts, or just the move they need?

Then everything distorts. For a second, it’s as if the room ripples like water. Yuji starts to play—or he tries. The keys weigh a ton, like someone clings to them from the other side. The ghost’s face shards in a window, clear and sad. Her lips move, but no voice comes through—only the wind above the eaves.

The music halts, replaced by a distorted reverb. All eyes turn to Riku, who’s vanished from his post by the stair. The door isn’t locked, but they can’t open it now. A clock tolls two AM. Something whispers to Yue: ‘It isn’t over. Finish my last song.’

This arc ends with Yuji, fists balled, vowing not to leave Riku behind. Kanae pulls her phone for another try at a photo, face strained but stubborn. Will they play the ghost’s lost tune and earn their escape, or are they too late?

Open-ended. Would you keep trying, or run for the hills? The light outside is starting to leak gold into the room, but it feels nothing like morning.
