Episode Arc: “Shattered Veil: The Murals Bleed”
Yuta Arakawa hates museums. He’s shared it once, years before, half-joking to his older sister while she tugged his sleeve. Now, on a cold November morning, he’s standing at the gates of Old Shigure Pavilion, forced into the school trip. Minako, his only real friend, grins and elbows him. “You scared of old faces on walls?” she teases. Yuta flashes back, just for a moment, to a night when he saw something crawl behind peeling wallpaper. Do you remember ever seeing something just out of view as a child?
Inside, it’s gloom and locked glass. Ancient murals cover the top floors, some peeling, some covered, all forbidden to touch. The class guide, Miss Saki, warns: “Never linger too long near a mural. Some things are for the past.” One mural catches Yuta’s eye—the face just like his missing sister Airi. The girl in the paint seems to glare across the gold and dark green paint, mouth parted in an old scream. He hears his heartbeat in his ear. Is that how you felt, standing near an old photo and feeling it looking back?
Minako edges away. “Let’s go. You’re white as chalk, Yuta.” But his name was whispered just now. He could swear it. They turn. The flow of classmates is gone. A shadow with too many fingers skips between halls. Yuta clenches Minako’s cold hand. “Did you… see that?”
Flashlights flicker and go dead, one after the other. The corridor grows damp. Behind glass, painted eyes blink wet. Yuta’s vision doubles—was that a shape crawling out of the mural? 
The class is missing. Saki’s voice is yell-raw in the far hall, screaming names out. Minako covers her ears. “It’s not her, Yuta. That’s not her!” Down the west hallway, one door hangs open. Its hinges squeak as Yuta pulls Minako forward. He gulps. “We have to find the others. We need to stay together.” Why do horror places always steal sound?
On the other side: deeper paintless marble, sticky and damp. Murals here are cracked. Skulls hover against a gold sky, and from every mouth, long hands slide. All around, they find empty phone shells, bits of bags. Above, voices drift—sing-song nonsense in Yuta’s old childhood dialect. “Do you want to come paint with us? It’s easy. Stay forever.”
Minako shakes. “We’re making this up.” She says, voice cracking. She pinches his arm, but neither wakes. The painted hands reach across the wall as the mural flexes. A girl steps out, narrow and small, hair tangled over one wide eye. She smiles, then drops on them both fast as an eel. 
They freeze. One swipe, and the world hugs tight and cold—Yuta bites his tongue to taste if this is real. In seconds, they’re inside the painting. It’s dusk and blood now, with stairs floating to nowhere and mouths whispering praise or threat, he can’t tell. The girl lingers at the shadow’s edge; her mouth traces Yuta’s sister’s whimper. “Help.” Was it Airi again?
Miss Saki is here in oil and brushstroke, fused half to a tree. “Stay down. It can’t sense movement—not at first.” Something—a thick black form, boneless and eyeless, slides behind hushed trees, snakelike fingers pulling children into painted folds. Minako tries to melt out, arm first, scraping through slick color, whispering what must be her grandmother’s prayer.
Yuta hugs the wood, but wind blows paint past his face. A chilling eye rolls in the sky. “You won’t leave, Yuta.” His jaw shakes. He squares up. “Let her go. Take me if you have to.” The thing grins. “Two work better. You know this.” It stretches minutely, catching new souls for the wall’s growing face. 
They fight. Scraps of dreams fly, and needling paint eats each old piece of memory: family, friends, summer bugs zipping on a window. Yuta draws on the picture of his lost sister—the shape she’d cast in light, her laugh over a rainy rail crossing. Straining inward, his memories burn holes in the painted world, flooding it with real smell—grass, street food, sun and cold. The monster screams.
He pulls Minako clear—moment by breathless moment, picking pieces of color out from her skin, even as the hands of lost kids grab at their ankles. Outside, light creeps through. The thing inside the mural pounds a fist, dragging itself up with their older teacher’s voice: “Don’t leave us!” Yuta’s head swings, just as Minako, half-standing, points. “Behind–”
The old mural cracks, eyes bulging, hands shattering glass from within. Blood leaks out between bits of gold. Sirens roar. Then the light goes sharp white. 
The sun’s up. Police race up the path. Miss Saki doesn’t come out. On broken stone, the mural’s girl—Airi, or someone nearly Airi—reaches a hand from behind paint and whispers in Yuta’s ear: “Come back tomorrow. I remember now.” End episode. Would you visit a haunted museum knowing someone’s waiting in the wall?
