The Festival of Empty Masks

Nights fall heavy and silent on Ishirama, a mountain town rarely found on any maps. From up close, you’d miss the odd look of its houses, the strange way windows gape open, dark as eyes, even during the day. Turns out, Hana Minami, a city student, really wished she’d stayed home for summer break. Shun, her shy neighbor, stands beside her outside the weathered inn at dusk, whispering, ‘See that light over by the woods? I’ve never seen it grow this strong.’

Ishirama is an old place, one lonely post bus out, three in all week if you’re lucky. Would you dare spend a night in a mountain town everyone else seems to avoid? The villagers talk in low voices, pausing when Hana creeps past. There’s an air of hiding, from her or maybe from something else. Hana came hoping for peace, a break from family fights after her father died—but soon, peace is the one thing she can’t find.

The Festival of Empty Masks happens once every twenty years. Hana’s stay falls on that exact week. She’s drawn out by music she doesn’t know, stumbling into strange groups gathered around twisted wood huts, everyone dressed in white but for paper-mache faces. Shun’s sister holds Hana’s arm, whispers fast and sharp: ‘Walk behind me. Never take your mask off if they offer one.’

That first night, a sense of being watched grates on Hana’s skin. She tries to sketch in her notebook, but the paper grows damp even if no water touches the page. In the mirror, her own mouth twists into shapes that don’t feel like hers. Why does her face itch near candlelight?

At dinner, Hana meets Mrs. Sayama, innkeeper since the 1930s. She pours plum tea, stares at Hana, and asks, ‘Are there dreams here you don’t understand? Did you come for a reason you can’t name?’ aicg-10444-img-2-6a3ed776cf13f.png It’s the first time Hana feels seen, but she can’t answer—not really. What would you say to a stranger who asks questions about your worst pain?

Heavy rain sets in. Old songs echo down the streets, strange harmonies no radio plays. Late at night, Shun visits Hana, urgent. He waves bone-white slips of paper in the candle glow. ‘Have you seen these? My sister found them nailed behind shutters. They say you see faces in walls after the festival. My dad once did. He still doesn’t dress other than in white.’

No sleep comes for Hana. At 1 a.m., masked dancers fill the square. Their steps repeat in odd, rhythm-less waves. Hana sneaks down, drawing the dancers as they swirl. Soon, her fingers ache. On each watch, more faces appear on her paper, none matching anyone she saw that day. In one, a cracked porcelain smile. In another, a black stain leaking like ink under both eyes.

Crows appear in the lanes the next morning, unusually pale. Has folklore ever given you the shivers as much as what you manage to see with your own eyes at dawn?

Villagers approach Hana in daylight, urging her to ‘join in just for one masked hour tonight.’ They’ve heard she’s an artist—they hate to break old customs, but want new blood in the night-walk. Even Shun cannot meet Hana’s eyes. ‘If you go, don’t stand at the edge of the clearing. Those who do never come back unchanged.’

That night, she caves. They fit her with an empty mask, smooth to the touch, blank as clouded glass. As the drummers wail, Hana joins the circle. She breathes fog through the painted holes, voice caught and strange. Sweating, her hand clamps the thin strap across her cheek. But the mask grows hot, warm as skin, nearly pulsing. Is this mask just paper, or is it alive in some small cruel way?

She blinks. Hand in hand with dancers, Hana finds herself on the far side of the bonfire, steps away from leaving the safe light. Dancers whisper soft—repeating fragments from nightmares she thought were hers alone. She breaks from the chain, reaching to pull off the mask, but it sticks fast. She claws at it, bites down.

Weird sights swim through smooth eyeholes now. A hundred festival-goers with the same face. Is she part of the story, or are they wearing her as a mask this time?

Thunder cracks, the bonfire wreaths them all in white and blue. A gap opens in the old crates behind the fire—someone runs. It’s Shun’s voice, clear but hollow: ‘Hana! Over here! Don’t look behind you!’ aicg-10444-img-3-6a3ed7eba8682.png

Heart hammering, she’s desperate and spinning. She tries to shout, can’t. Tears blur her sight. She stumbles toward Shun, cloak tangling at her feet. Pasts she never lived flit before her eyes: brief visions in blinding color, an old man screaming, a girl stilled by rain, a train lost in smoke. Goosebumps skitter down her arms.

A veiled woman steps from the fire. In a voice ice-sharp, she whispers, ‘To break the passing, speak the keeper’s name.’ Only Hana can’t remember hers anymore. She pulls off the mask, skin tight and raw beneath, but not the face she left at home. ‘Shun,’ Hana coughs, lips sticky, ‘What if this face isn’t mine?’ aicg-10444-img-4-6a3ed7ed7b580.png

Nobody answers. Drums pound louder. The void around the festival circle yawns wide, shades of mist twisting, painting memories on black stone. The last sight for the night: Hana clutching her mask, both eyes wide and empty, crowd melting away. But in that last glimpse, the wind lifts, and her sketchbook slides, unfinished, missing every face.

Would you sleep if they promised your own face would still belong to you come morning? Or would you do what Hana just did…and hope to wake up?

The episode closes as the whole masked circle turns inward, each dancer casting no shadow where Hana once stood. Cliffhanger sharp as a blade: Will Hana reclaim her past, or become the faceless one for twenty years more? aicg-10444-img-5-6a3ed863a0609.png
