Kaito Yamada didn’t believe in urban legends. His world was cement, steel, tired shop lights. Night after night, he dragged his knapsack down silent Chiyoda lanes to his old apartment. It was routine. Had to be safe, right?

He didn’t run. He hadn’t told Sora. Rei’s somehow turned up too. “You… weren’t supposed to go alone,” Rei mutters. Her face looks grave. “People vanish on this street. So scared, a few older students moved away. Scared to pass this spot offline.”

A tiny orange traffic cone sits in the street but no cars ever pass here. Old bikes fallen, left for rust. They step over dirty glass. Sora nods at graffiti: ‘Walk Quiet.’ Graffiti shouldn’t hiss, but this message sounds like breath against the wall.

People left handwritten memoirs on crumbled shop doors: crayon letters, post-its. Rei stops, studies one note: Nao – “Still listening.” It’s jagged and dark. Street lamps flicker, though none are hooked up. Voice in the dark croons, stealing consonants from Kaito’s own comments. He gets chills now.

Kaito wipes sweat. Why is the ground damp when there’s no recent rain? Voice again, but sharper: “Stop. Turn.” Name, softer this time. “Kaito…” He jumps. Rei won’t meet his eyes.

There’s frost around their shoelaces as each kid faces what the legend told: If Umbra Alley speaks to you—never reply out loud. But Sora’s voice breaks. “HEY, who’s there? STOP COPYING ME!” Now the echo in the dark answers back, slower, harsh—a perfect blend of their three voices, saying secrets never told aloud.

Kaito grips Sora’s sleeve tight so she won’t dash ahead. Rei starts to chant, and the runes on her sleeve are glowing in the beam now. “Don’t talk back to it! It only learns your thoughts if you speak. Hold quiet.”

Sora’s mouth clamps shut. Still, her shadow steps away from her feet, grinning. Who else can see it? Do you think you’d freeze or run?

The fog thickens. Street ends behind, entrance is lost. The kids circle close, cobblestones sticky. The shadow looms near. It corners Sora—gets almost close enough for them to see what’s inside eyes. But Rei throws salt.

A harsh wind shoves, sends Sora and Kaito sliding into stacked boxes. Rei whispers, “We need your truth, not your echo. Trust me, no lies.” Kaito blurts: “The story scares me, but— I believe you.” Suddenly, his voice warps, drawn into the side alley mouthhole that looks like a sewer.

The squirming silhouette flares—burned from Kaito’s raw shock and fear, salt, and something only he understands. Alley crunches smaller. They’re forced to move backward, floor unfamiliar, new shops not mapped to usual Chiyoda blocks. They slip into blue-black night as a siren sounds far, too far away.

Last shot, that twisted alleyscape cracking apart with an unseen scream. Rei yanks Kaito back. “Don’t say your full name,” she mutters. She covers his mouth with palm that’s dotted in chalk lines. “We didn’t finish this. We’ll come back tomorrow. Umbra Alley releases nobody first try. Its secrets cling, always.” Now, a phone chirps—Kaito’s broken phone pings unreadable notifications. It shouldn’t work. The last notch of signal reads: ‘found you’, blinking in razor text.

Skip to the ending frame—Rei studying the post-its under harsh lamp, scribbling “1/3” in her faded blueprint notebook. The case isn’t solved. The legend grows.
