Code Shadow: Network of Lies

Shibuya at night. The air is thick. Protagonist Kazuma Shirogane eats at a cheap noodle bar. He stares at a flickering TV—everything posts rumors about missing kids near the train lines. His friend Kaede bumps his table. “You saw the posts? Some say it’s black vans again.” They bicker quietly. Others pretend not to hear.

Kazuma’s goal: crack the riddle behind these vanishings. He’s not in it for glory. Two years back, he lost his own brother after the same sort of rumors. What would you do if it was your family?

Classmate Riku joins them, blowing on his soup. Smaller, more quiet than the rest. Riku says, “Someone messaged me. They claimed there’s a hidden group in the news firms.” Nobody laughs. There’s tension. Kaede wants Kazuma to leave the case alone. She fears for his safety, still remembers last year’s attack on his locker.

The next night, their tech wizard Ami hacks an old phone. They track messages to an abandoned arcade. Neon dust hangs in the air outside. Kazuma and Kaede stand, worried. Inside, Ami cracks the code to unlock a device keyed to a strange network—an encrypted chat where users swap theories, wild accusations, and meetups.

The plot branches. Each viewpoint differs. Some believe in the dark hand of mega firms, others in cults or whisper of “ghost police”. Data loops and timestamps lead them to a group name. THE FAMILY. Pokey and small at first. Then threads of chat light up, coordinated, as if in a command system. Ami jots coordinates. Doors unlock remotely—a feat she isn’t boasting about.

Inside this network, Ami spots their missing classmate Mayu. She’s online—in fact, she claims she never left the local area. Is someone else using her identity? Even Riku looks pale. If masked chat operators can appear anywhere, whenever, what’s real?

The next day: opento engage sources in person. Wearing modest gear—hoodies, fast trainers—they wade into JV Plaza after school. A known spot for whispers and signals; approaching the pop-up smoothie stall, asking odd questions. A sketchy suit glances at Ami, then vanishes into the station crowd.

Kaede urges them to slow down. “Why can’t the cops help? Or do you think they’re linked too?” Kazuma stays silent. Remembering two years earlier, it’s clear why fear is stronger than trust now.

At home, Kazuma sets up an IR cam linked to Ami’s hacked device. He wants facial records if his surveillance picks anyone up lurking near his apartment. Does anyone else in this city feel watched right now?

Night. He wakes to a string of messages. Just three words: “STAY INDOORS, RUN.” It’s Mayu’s name again, but the writing is strange, almost off-style. Paranoia sets in fast.

He clambers onto the roof; there’s no noise, except distant crosswalk beeps. But Kaede and Riku meet him up there anyway. Together, the group debates on the place of trust, bravery, and the true reach of systems larger than you.

The group decides they will test one rumor. There’s a mural downtown. It’s old, chipped, rarely noticed. The network chat claims trouble finds those who cut part of the painted clock at noon. Kazuma goes at lunch, blade in hand, nerves running. He feels the hum of phones simmers hot all around.

No event, at first. Then, strange posts surface. Image stills of him at the site; URLs he’s never seen spread the detail. People who don’t know him tag the shots online, as if guided by an invisible hand. aicg-6023-img-2-6a2bbf58892c7.png

A citysperson in a brown hoodie gives him a scrap of map, says nothing. She bolts. That night Ami drones: “We just stepped deeper in.” Her program flags a locked file she couldn’t ever open—a folder on THE FAMILY leading to root servers traced by old hand-leather notes only a field agent would have.

Kazuma stays up, choosing between chasing another clue, or calling Mayu’s home again, even knowing the proxy on the line could be a bot or worse: a faker running circles for bigger fish. Kaede watches thunder hit the city spires and begs him not to risk vanishing too. She’s shaken, always keeping their group texts open now.

Nearing dawn. Sacrificing sleep, Kazuma weighs breaking appointed cyber law; he knows this is more than Idle Talk threads on forums. He huddles with Ami, saying: “Let’s crash a meeting. Let’s force a face out.” They agree—it might be their last chance, given the acceleration of new vanishings.

At school lunch, poster glue hardly dry, Riku slides in a folded page. It’s an invite to a locked event from someone posting with Mayu’s old tutor code. Date, place, down a disused station platform. Hour is midnight. The tagline is iron hard: “NO PHONES.”

Group tension warps. Kaede almost backs out. “What if we never leave?” Riku’s nervous, unsure, but says quietly, “If no one takes the risk, who wins?” Are they right to press further, or pawns pushing deep at others’ whim?

The night of the summit, the four stand on the abandoned steps, soft rain hissing down. Torches flicker beyond locked gates. They step inside. Footsteps tap ahead—shapes in masks, lit by low blue phone-glow. A woman’s calm voice demands proof of intent: “State your wound.” Kazuma answers a riddle connected to past posts. The cold group lets them in.

Each of the four is tested, not just for codes but for secrets buried by online shares—texts assumed private. Trust grows brittle. Ami shakes as she sees in the crowd a profile avatar once tied to threatening her last spring. They meet “The Keeper,” and get a file drive that might crack THE FAMILY’s true client base.

Kazuma learns his brother’s final texts are hoarded here, not erased. He falters, breath raspy. Kaede grips his arm. They press on, knowing too much, seeing city officials’ emails in shock files.

As cops speed by outdoors, sirens rising, their planned escape point starts to flood with message pings. Someone’s added a new thread: “Do any of them leave tonight?” Hawk-eyed, deathly tired, Kazuma texts Ami. “You got a copy?” She nods, pale. aicg-6023-img-3-6a2bbf6579669.png

Uncertainty for all. Kazuma tries to smile for Kaede as doors click open to shouts above. Running through the subway dark, digital proof in pocket, faceless shadows behind them—will any adult take their files, or believe in any truth drawn from digital ghost stories?

The next day, school’s abuzz. Headlines whisper about an “UNEXPECTED FIRE downtown.” Kaede’s phone jams with texts: some friendly, some nameless, “Stay silent.” There’s only one place now, dropped deep in the clues: an old payphone at city hall, its glass cracked. aicg-6023-img-4-6a2bbfcdab72c.png

Kazuma faces the box. Does he dare to try the number in the last file? The line is static, night building behind. Small faces in the station glass ask the viewer—What would you risk, when trust in your network’s broken and every screen may lie?
