Mirai has two rules—one for the badge and one for the heart. She’s young, smart, keen. Big corps see her as a problem, not an answer. By her side, Taku Ikeda sips canned coffee. He used to run data smuggling. Now, he deals hope and old info. Kabuto repeats every rumor he finds, barely legal and not always sober. Moriko swears she’s just a meteorologist, but her cloud maps match detours of criminal drones. All four chase the shadow, not knowing how close it’s reaching.
There’s a shift tonight, you can feel it. The city grid pulses weird. Power, money, hidden drugs—something changed. Every clue drops cold: drone logs wiped, cameras blind, no mark but a single neon feather left where gang sysops vanished without a trace. Algorithms crowd the sky. They’ve hit cargo docks. A clean in-and-out on the sushi megatower—a heist with zero noise. Unheard of. Someone’s spinning the city’s datalines with ghost fingers. But Taku suspects more. ‘This isn’t street work,’ he tells Mirai, ‘it smells too sharp.’ Does he mean sabotage, or something meaner? The next mark’s got to be big. Hyperbank, maybe the medical grid?
At dusk, Kabuto stumbles in with nose blood, code-scraps curling off his fingertips. “The Black Lotus are talking again. Buzz about ‘the Dusk Protocol’ got posted before their chat logs crashed.” Moriko pipes in, crisis maps flickering on her pad. ‘Security deadzones form a spiral across Ginza. No patterns but the spiral’s center hides bigger flows.’ Mirai traces the feather under neon. Her double, her own mirror.
Action serious, Mirai orders a gridwalk by foot. She likes concrete more than satellite views. You ever pace neon tunnels two hours after sunset? Each puddle traps colors, corners reek of old oil, hope lost for cheap charms. Taku pops locks with skill. Moriko disables comms for five minutes at a time. A skirmish. Heavy pulse. Energy shoves Mirai back but her eyes lock, zeroing right then on a face she recognizes from the bureau’s black cases—Makoto Itsuno, former police architect, now a cyber fugitive. He gives a lopsided grin. ‘You’re both late and too early.’
‘You did this to scare the big guys?’ Mirai spits. Makoto uses an ice-cold voice: ‘The feathers are sensors. Only the worthy can follow the spiral.’ His hands move; digital glyphs fill the gloom. Suddenly, half the alley flickers out—data erasure alive and sharp as a blade. Mirai dares, ‘Who else walks the spiral?’ Silence. Makoto bolts, vanishing into cross-city static. 
The stakes just jump. The team beds down in an old coin-capsule, city static crackling above. ‘He named you,’ Taku notes, eyes blinking hard. Mirai fingers the feather.
