Prologue: The Lights Never Came
Fast boats. Big moon above black water. That’s how seventeen-year-old Kazuo Umehara first saw South Sparrow Island. Thick trees crowd the rocky shore as his school’s adventure trip stares in wide-eyed awe. Some joke, others chatter, but Kazuo sits alone. If you were on that boat, would the still air make you uneasy too?
The plan is bright—three days unplugged: survival tasks, trust games, fires on the cliffs. But on the first night, a wall of fog rolls in and does not leave. Dawn ignores the sky. Dead smartphones, silent radios, and feeble flares sputter over the water. Hastings-sensei reaches for calm. Her voice strains: ‘Perhaps it’s solar storms? Just conserve strength for now.’ But soon, students trade theories in tight huddles. Fear hides at the edges of every joke.
Kazuo isn’t new to darkness. With two younger sisters at home and their father’s warnings—‘Always find the way back’—he can tie a bowline and start a fire if he must. Still, when darkness chokes the trees for a second day, and those strange, slow echoing sounds come from the rocks, Kazuo feels something catch in his chest.
The Group Fractures
Quickly, lines form. Akari jokes too much, talk spinning louder to cover her worry. Shuhei wants to scout the north shores, but Hanako snaps, ‘Don’t be heroic. Don’t split us up! We barely know the island.’ It’s clear already—will this be decided by plans…or by panic?
But Kazuo keeps edges, listens hard, and only tells what he knows for sure. Real answers—no one offers them. Only the dead trees groaning in the wind, and the ‘popping’ sounds; a rhythm almost musical rising every dusk. ‘What if it’s not a machine?’ murmurs Akari, ‘What if it’s something waking up?’
An uneasy vote goes through. One group guards the main camp. The other—Kazuo, Akari, brusque Hanako, and gentle Kenta—will follow the strange sound at dusk and map its source. Survival kits shaken out, every flashlight double-checked. No one remarks that no animals have been heard—not a gull, not a fly—since the fog closed in. Should that silence matter?
The Search For Light
Silent woods. Dense mist falls heavy, clinging to their skin. Knotted creepers block fast steps. ‘What if it’s just a fault in the rocks?’ Hanako asks over her shoulder, but her walk quickens down the carved pathways. Even Kazuo’s own firm steps grow slow. That sound is stranger up close—not like a bird, but liquid—alive and echoing. 
His breath starts to speed—how about yours? Doubt bubbles. Kenta offers quiet hope: ‘Let’s mark every tree with these red ribbons. We’ll at least know how far we still are from home base.’ Orange twine marks tell their shaky route, but the return path vanishes despite all care, swallowed by endless, shifting gray. Shadow falls where anyone escapes the narrow flashlights. Missing time—flashes of dark that slip from memory—all of it pulls at group trust.
Kazuo splits off for a quick look ahead, despite Akari tugging at his sleeve. Twice, he swears he sees faint shapes move—a child, hair loose, ducking behind rocks—but every time he calls aloud, nothing comes. Returning, he finds the team now missing Hanako, panic fading into groundless growing fear. The group breaks down. Quiet Kenta sobs. Akari’s laugh edges close to a scream—
The First Discovery
As he calms them, a flash of orange—one marker, twisted at the roots—leads Kazuo to a shallow pit. Burned wood, old shirts, bent glasses, half-buried in dirt. Still warm, fresh despite no other signs. Imagine studying them with your heart swarming your throat—one pair of glasses matches Hanako’s, but are they really hers?
More pits ahead, spread under the circling trees. Something’s using the items from those who vanish. Kazuo is about to pull a scarf free, but bright pinpricks in the dark spin around them—red eyes atop pale, almost human shapes peering through the fog. The sound swells, almost sung now, making everyone shudder.
Do you grab a shard, do you run? He chooses to step between the figures, heart pure courage…or just cracked with need. Out loud, he calls, ‘Stop! What do you want?’ The voices answer—not in words, but with hundred soft footsteps, receding down every avenue, leaving Kazuo shaking in a ring of cold air and crystals that melt in his hand. 
Growing Suspicion
Dragged back to camp with nothing certain except the loss, the survivors talk over old maps, their voices tight. Are these pit ghosts? Trapped island spirits? Aliens lost like them? Kazuo writes theories in secret, but is careful sharing little. What would you tell the rest if they were your friends?
By the dusk of the fourth day, when the fog deepens and the food is near gone, old rules start to crack. ‘If we want to see sunrise, we need trust,’ the teacher urges. Yet not one person, even Kazuo, says clear what games shape the island. Broken flares decorate the sand now.
The group sets a rotating watch. When Kazuo’s turn comes, a soft laugh floats across the water—Hanako’s distinctive tone. It’s followed by a white figure standing still by the broken jetty. He shouts her name and rushes out into the cold. 
Bargain at Dawn—Or the edge?
Hanako’s shape beckons at the edge of the old pier. For a second, Kazuo can believe she’s still fine. If you were in his shoes—do you call to her? Or run to warn those in the tents?
Fresh footprints in the black sand trace in loops around the shelter. Still, Kazuo keeps forward, refusing to be lost. Her hand lifts. In that moment, all the missing are there—faces fading, names whispered on the wind. Cold streaks down his spine as the figures urge him past the tide line.
‘You don’t need to know where we’re from,’ Hanako gently coos, ‘Just what you’ll do to leave.’ At last, as the fake dawn threatens, Kazuo, heart racing, pulls a sputtering flare from his belt. He lights it fast, and its blue glow spotlights the whole crowd, real and hidden. Their faces rally in to meet him, and with sudden surety, the fog itself splits in an ear-splitting scream that makes real waves roll onto the beach. 
Cliffhanger: Who Will Cross?
The flare’s light reveals deeper secrets—a doorway among reef rocks. As his friends run at his back, Kazuo shouts: ‘We cross together, or die alone!’
The tunnel yawns and the group, battered and thin, enter single file—behind them the red lights multiply over untold feet. So which path leads home? The episode ends with a mouthful of cold water, ghostly voices, and a hint that something’s followed them in.
