A Test of Taste: Sakura Academy’s Soup Duel

Synopsis: A Test of Taste – Sakura Academy’s Soup Duel

Akemi Miyasato has only one wish. She wants to master real cooking before she leaves Sakura Academy. Most days, she dreams of simple things: a friend, a meal, her older brother Yuuto smiling at her success. But school can feel cold for a transfer student with awkward speech. There’s buzz about the autumn school festival, and the class must agree fast on what they’ll show. Ryo Asano wants the easy way out: sell chips or soft drinks. Akemi stares at her packed lunch and doubts herself.

“Why bother with soup close to winter?” Ryo says, tossing his orange underhand. “Rice balls would sell.” Emiko, who sits near the heater, rolls her eyes. “Everyone does that. I want real food! Last year nobody made soup!” Akemi fidgets with the drawstring on her lunch pouch, afraid someone will ask if she even knows how to use a kitchen. In the end, the teacher looks at Akemi. “Any ideas, Miyasato-san?” There’s a hush.

How would you answer if everyone stared and waited for your dream?

She swallows and says, “Soup brings warmth. We make it from what’s in season.” Emiko sits up straight. Akemi hears a few quiet ‘hmm’s. The vote tips just enough: the festival project is hearty autumn soup. Ryo, grumbling, adds, “I can’t boil water, so don’t blame me when it burns.”

Starting prep means teamwork. Akemi leads, but she’s never managed a team outside her brother and herself. Emiko sings as she cuts carrots. Judoka club twins Yuna and Yuto come with corn, arms full, bellies half-full, too. Ryo sits, judge-like, offering ‘feedback’ on every taste. Yuuto sticks his head in to tease. “Make me proud, or move out come spring!” It looks like the cooking club shed, with bodies perched on crates.

The week rolls on. Mistakes taste like too much salt. The second day, they burn onions, and smoke sets off the alarm. Laughter fills the room, though the cleaning is rough. Akemi stops in quiet moments to jot notes—add daikon, toast sesame seeds, don’t trust Ryo with ladles. Tradition and fun start to mix. She invites Emiko after class. “Ever tried miso honey?”

On too-bright mornings, Akemi eats in the school courtyard—a habit since transferring from Fukuoka. She remembers making clear soup, learning from her mother. Lonely in a crowd, Akemi only wants her food to bring people close. Does cooking taste better if you share it?

The festival arrives, colder than planned. Chilly air sweeps through the grounds, and other classes rush up their offerings. Smells clash: sweetbread, cheap tfried noodles, sharp daikon. A crisp wind carries chatter and hints of anxiety. At Sakura’s tent, their soup simmers—daikon, fresh mushrooms, miso, a broth made from scratch, floating door-shaped carrot slices, and one stubborn cinnamon stick they’d argued about. Hundreds bustle. The judges circle soon, with Yukiko-sensei leading them, flute of fresh tea in hand.

“Rules say the whole class serves. Means each person will present.” The line forms: Emiko charms little kids. Ryo hawks soup like a salesman. Akemi hangs back, ladle clutched. Nerves beat in her chest. But she looks across the sea of students and sees Yuuto in line, grinning. “Your move, kiddo.” She answers by scooping soup, careful and brave.

Competition is tight: Class 3-A brings roasted vegetable broth, spiked with fried mochi and hints of apple. The new student, Kaito, is quiet, but he dresses their stand with fall leaves. Students trade secret soup with rival club members. Heated rivalry, but with every spoonful they grow curious. What makes class 2-B’s soup special? Emiko sneaks out to try the tomato-pumpkin stew in a rice flour bread bowl—returns with a red chin and a smile. “We might lose on fun, but flavor is ours,” she whispers as she swipes a leftover carrot star.

Lunchtime hits rush hour. The line wraps around a light post, leaving Akemi speechless. Does popularity even matter when you started with nothing? Will anyone remember the cook who just wanted friends?

As day shifts to dusk, announcements boom across the loudspeaker. Akemi’s hands shake. Four classes stand in front—her soup pot balanced delicately, each judge raising one bowl. Sakura’s principal deadpans, “Winner makes dinner for the staff.” Kids groan softly. You ever put your hopes in something you could spill?

Yuuto cheers from the side, face red. Emiko grabs Akemi’s arm, hissing, “Breathe in, out…” Yuna fumbles her ladle. “If we fail, at least we freeze together,” Ryo jokes, making even stony Kaito laugh.

A silence draws out, longer than Akemi’s first awkward lunch in the courtyard. All you have left are your hands and a hundred little wishes in one soup pot. Before the result is read, the school’s sound system cracks, and lights flicker. The entire courtyard gasps as shadows dart past the fence. Was that someone moving? Is the festival being watched?

Judge Matsuno points. “It’s not just flavor this year. It’s the heart,” he says, lips pursed above steam. Just as principal Fujiki lifts the golden soup ladle, a howl slices through the cold. Police lights flash right outside the school yard. A worried adult calls out: “All students must stay indoors!” In a whirl of shocked voices, Emiko points: silhouetted on the goalpost is a masked figure, carrying what looks like half of Ryo’s expensive portable stove.

The crowd scatters. Tables fall. Soup sloshes across one girl’s bright socks. Yuna and Yuto leap to chase the figure, who disappears into the playground. Akemi ends up alone, hands covered in broth, standing atop flipped crates. Caught in deep quiet, words bubble up: she was about to win, right? Or perhaps not. Will Sakura Academy ever finish its first soup duel? Can a transferred girl lead her new friends to a real victory?

Cliffhanger ends: Akemi stands facing the playground shadows with only her burnt ladle and the others lost—all hungry for answers, revenge, or maybe just another bowl.

What would you do if your hard work was stolen at the finish line? Would you keep cooking or run after what’s missing?
