Glass Hearts, Steel Minds: Midterm Showdown
Glass Hearts, Steel Minds: Midterm Showdown
Sora Minamoto sits at her desk by the window, eyes fixed on the wilting hydrangea outside. It’s midterm week at Daikoku High, and Sora’s hand trembles when she opens her math book. Nobody asks Sora much—she likes to draw in the back, and talks to her cat more than anyone at school.
That changes when Miss Katagiri places new charts on the board. Next to Sora’s name, red letters: RIVAL. Under it, Yuji Kagami’s name shines. You ever had someone picked, just to go toe-to-toe against you? Sora tries to hide, but Yuji is all grins, white shirt always pressed. He slides next to her after class, bouncing a globe ball off his palm. “You ready for this? I won’t go easy.”
Sora just wants to beat her last score. Yuji wants to prove he’s untouchable, just like his father says. Did you ever have someone want to win just to make you lose?
They’re joined by Misa (class rep, numbers don’t scare her), and Shun (fastest runner, slowest in class). They split into pairs, trading questions while sunlight cuts across the floor. Funny how people show a different side when they think someone’s watching.
Sora sketches wave graphs to study. Yuji says that’s dumb, then tries to copy her notes. They push past jokes. Some long words in the text scare Sora, but she doesn’t show it. In one quiet moment, Yuji confides, “If I mess this up, my dad’ll flip. You’re lucky. Free as air.”
Sora wants to throw her pencil at him. She’s trying, too. Why don’t others see that?

Afternoon crowds into dusk. Misa brings red bean buns—one falls down, splat, forgotten. Shun gets a nosebleed from stress. The clock ticks louder.
Sora and Yuji trade test-mock questions like badminton shots. Quick, sharp. Then, a slip: Sora forgets a key formula during timing. She wants to vanish, cheeks sharp with heat.
Yuji grins. But right after, he marks the same mistake. His hand shakes a little too. Their wall drops for a second. You ever realized how much of someone is armor?
The groups swap roles. Tomorrow’s test pulls them tighter. Sora can’t sleep. The hydrangea quivers in the wind when she looks outside in the dark, and there’s faint laughter in the hall—but is it for her?
Morning light knocks on the window. Sora stands in the corridor, Yuji at her side. Neither speak. When the test papers are handed out, ink blots their futures.
Sora takes a breath. Yuji moves his pencil. Miss Katagiri’s eyes flicker between them. The stakes feel heavier than grade points. What is it about showing up, here and now, to prove you matter?
The episode fades on Sora glancing at Yuji, stomach in knots, as the test timer clicks to start. Results next week—so who has the edge now?
