Leaves In The Summer Wind
Kaede’s spent her whole life in a bright, sleepy town by the edge of a whispering forest. She’s always wanted to help others, like her grandma, a caretaker loved by all. Summer is thick in the air now, heavy and slow. The world outside school feels big, but also kind of lonely. If you could trade places with someone new in town, would you?
On a June morning that starts like any other, Kaede finds a small black cat on her way to school. ‘You’re lost, too,’ she mutters, scratching its chin. The cat purrs. For some reason, it follows her all the way to homeroom. Her best friend Yume thinks it’s a sign. ‘Maybe somebody new’s about to come along,’ she says, eyes bright, her backpack hanging open. Her words hang there in the summer heat. ‘Don’t be silly,’ Kaede shoots back, but she smiles too.
Lunch is the time Yume comes alive — they race for most days, aiming to feel their hearts drum at the finish line near the playground cherry tree. Today, though, a new boy is skating by their usual spot. Hair blond, face kind, clothes way too urban for Daisy Hill town. ‘That’s Hiroto,’ girls whisper. Rumor is his dad got noticed in the city, sent him here to his distant aunt. Some think he must hate the slow pace. Kaede can’t tell if he looks lost or just calm.
Yume, never shy, grabs Kaede. ‘Let’s talk to him!’ Kaede hesitates, rests a hand on the cat’s dark fur.
They cross the field. Hiroto sees them coming, backpack floating at his side. He sets his board down and gives the cat a look. ‘That’s mine, actually,’ he says with a grin. The cat rubs his jeans and mews.
Kaede sighs in relief. ‘He chose you right away this morning.’ Hiroto smiles. ‘He’s always looking for friends.’ Kaede and Yume laugh — it’s a light, bubbling sound, not forced or fake. When was your last laugh like that?
Dull days pass. The three meet often, pulled to the same bench under the big willow near the old skate park. They swap stories. Hiroto’s are sharp, dodging city edge, and soon Yume teaches him to skip stones in the creek by the woods.
One evening, talk drifts. Yume asks, ‘Ever felt out of place?’ Kaede flinches, plucks grass from the ground. ‘Sometimes I wish I was more…brave,’ she admits. Hiroto nods, squinting, watching the sky turn pink. ‘New places are scary. But maybe not when you’ve got cats and friends.’
The next day, conflict is quick. Hiroto’s skateboard brushes some older boy’s bike by the market. ‘City boy can’t see straight!’ shouts Jun, known all over school for his sharp voice. Hiroto stands tall, refusing to bow his head. It’s Katsuo who steps in, the quietest junior on campus, someone both Yume and Kaede never noticed much before. ‘He didn’t mean it,’ Katsuo mutters. But Jun doesn’t listen.
Everyone gathers now. Kaede wants to help but she rattles inside. It’s Yume, voice sharp but small, who turns the moment. ‘Cut it out. We’re all part of this place.’ For a second, even the grownups browsing fruit listen. Jun turns away but not before tossing a final snap — ‘You’ll get what’s coming.’
Later, under the willow, emotions spill. Hiroto scuffs at his shoes, Kaede’s eyes on her hands. Yume pretends the moment didn’t sting, but tells a silly joke the way she does when she’s scared. Katsuo, now a rare new member of the group, sits a little away. ‘Don’t take it to heart,’ Kaede says at last, mostly to herself. The friends all nod.
A lazy summer night arrives. Hiroto forgets a homework book, and the four sneak into school to get it after sundown. The halls echo. Yume pushes a door. They find a classroom open, windows wide. Strange wind. Delft blue evening shines in. ‘It feels like the stories say, doesn’t it?’ Katsuo breathes out. His face breaks into a smile Kaede hasn’t seen before.
Shadow out of place. The cat on a desk, eyes wide, tail straight. Yume’s phone dies — no signal now. Thin lines in the dark hint at something more, some half-secret hiding in a summer school. ‘Did you see that?’ asks Kaede under her breath. The others shiver. At that, the black cat leaps to the window. They, too, run after it. As Kaede opens the window, there’s no sign. Only soft cicada hum.
Nights grow thick. Jun, left behind, watches them but doesn’t speak. Sensing strangers together like this steals at him, he knows. Sometimes, the line between feeling left out and making a bridge can vanish with one small talk, do you agree? More scenes follow in which friendships are challenged: a lost diary, a broken window blamed on one of the group, and a white lie that grows too fast. Yume shoulders a message nobody was meant to hear, while Katsuo knows a town riddle that might fix what just broke between the friends. Is this just gossip, though? Even Hiroto wonders if he can trust his new circle now that secrets breathe between the lines.
Midway through the summer, Kaede finds herself back under the old willow bench, scribbling lines in her hand-sized notebook. Sun burns behind the clouds. The cat returns, kneading her bag, purring quietly. Kaede lets herself cry there, just a tear or two nobody will see. Yume sits next to her without a word. Will the group ever feel smooth again, the way river stones are, polished by the same water for so many days?
As fireworks from the distant festival pop in the sky, the group comes together for ramen by the small main street. Each of them says sorry, sometimes in a rush, sometimes all mixed up. The black cat weaves between them, commanding a laugh. A fresh wind brings a new promise. ‘You think we’re changing?’ Yume asks. ‘Yeah,’ Kaede smiles. ‘But that doesn’t mean it’s bad.’
The arc ends not with all wounds healed, but an image of Kaede writing a letter and tucking it into the hollow of a willow. Hiroto, Yume, and Katsuo find her there. The four place their hands atop one another and watch the cat vanish into the bright folds of morning. But in a ripple of needles in the wind, a shadowy figure peeks from the woods. A set of eyes watches. Is it Jun, or something — someone else?
Summer may be a time for friendships. But in this town, it might also be a test of hearts. What does Kaede discover next beneath those old leaves?
