Touched by Neon: The Ripple Hack Arc

Some nights in Minato Sprawl feel slow. Jun Shimura sits on the rooftop, crate under him, drone wings catching turquoise city light. People slip through luminescence below. Pixels bleed into shadow. Jun isn’t here for fresh air. He’s scanning attackers in the code-glow—fingers swirling ghost-keyboards. Tonight, Jun wants answers.

Opposite him in spirit: Risa Kamachi, helmet off, goggles slung around her pale neck. She brightens at small victories. “Jun, doing the hack thing again? Can’t rest, can you?” He doesn’t look. “No rest till I see who stole Ripple. Care to join?” Chang hoarsely interrupts their banter. “Yo, AI’s learning quick. The ghosts haunt the Hub local drive. Get your boots moving. Holo-feeds spike on my dash.”

Jun flinches. Ripple isn’t only gone. It’s active. Built as open-source comm code to free Minato netizens, it got yanked last week and launched in rewritten shape—a harness turned tether. It now logs, spies, edits people’s dreams. So, here’s this quest: crack the new Ripple, trace its puppetmasters. Risa pounds Jun’s thin chest. “Better not blow up the boards. If these ghosts sniff us, the crash will hurt bad.” She grins dark. Do you think they can stay hidden?

Their ride—the battered cement lifter piqued by run-down synth signage—lifts, hiss and purple steam. Speed’s junk in this sector. They navigate stacked techno. Small time coders run skimmers under their noses. Jun reviews threat nodes. Risa keeps lookout. Chang throws snack bits, AI’s avatar mouse scurrying his scarf. Somewhere down synth lane, the trouble waits. aicg-1507-img-2-6a17a4b061880.png

They reach Hub Zero, third block east, top floors. Here’s where two days back, all messages warped to Mandarin verticals. The heart of sick Ripple. “Catch cat, poke nest,” grumbles Chang. The glass is cracked open; neon lines zap his tired eyes. Jun peels interfaces in AR. Code-trails run spider-web wild inside. One chunk pulses, an evil gleam: data from their mentor Hajime Sano, missing these four weeks.

Finding a mentor’s code twists Jun’s insides. He wants to run—honest panic, almost tears. Do you ever dash from the graveyard truth, or face it raw? Jun traces cross-references to links that don’t want to exist. He realizes the altered Ripple learns from every connection. That’s how these hackers survive—the system feeds them almost sentience. Risa yanks at cold cabling, mouth taut: “We time-out here, or run the live trace on those thieves?” Silence. Chang runs diagnostics. Jun refuses odds. “We’re in. If we burn, we burn as ghosts.” Risa’s nod is short but hard as flame.

Their break: Chang finds a silent partition, a side-layer of elevated access points. The thieves staged chats by redirecting familiar voice lines. Jun opens one and gasps. There’s a voice from Hajime. It’s thin—almost digital, almost plea. Jun asks, “That a rotted holo-lure, or the real him?” Risa records everything. Chang mutters, “We dive, we commit.”

Zoom cut—AI weirdness. Real streets outside strobe with static silhouettes, hungry for faces that never lift from screens. Above, their rooftop entry, slow spotlights swing as sweeper bots comb silicate ground for rogue tech. Internal tension mounts. The team weighs risk—stick with ghost-code, or track Hijacker Zero, revealed in these trails? Jun sets a trace injection. The target? Deep line in the Shadow-Area—a district cops don’t check, where digital and real bleed together. Mystery’s snared, but this thread could pop. “Deep end,” Risa says. “Ride or quit?” aicg-1507-img-3-6a17a4eb209bc.png

Chang pushes Jun—for once, the nerd decides they leap. No overthink. Jun chips in, “He tagged mentoring logs with AI stampers. There’s a trojan in mentor’s last message. That trojan might let us peek at their crowd’s next drop.” City code breaks, the partially held back wall trembles as lights filter neon jade. Jun’s palms sweat, chest closing. Outside, bots shift pattern. Do the hackers notice their trail and strike first? Even Jun senses things aren’t quite what they seem—as if they hack hologruel, dream jaunt, ghost orbits.

Wild chase sequence. Team snoops through side-line hackers fighting for Ripple, each dreaming their own entrance to the forbidden party. Lights clip, visual blurs, Chang cursing at immediate heat. Jun walls off real threats in split-second unity. He cuts code against shooters’ hex-safe rooms, buries proof in system cache, burning each digital fingerprint. aicg-1507-img-4-6a17a528458f1.png

Deeper inside this crypt, a live trace blows open after Risa trips an emergency escape. The cave-in is loud, covering maybe five blocks; energy blanks surge down towers in electric hell. Their boots click on glass, air shaken by coded growls. Jun sees signs left by Hajime: marker-stars in Ruby, only ones Hajime ever left behind for lost students. They trigger one. Code blooms outward in light-honey fire. The first clear leaving of the mentor: “Run deeper, seek Harmony. Don’t bleed here.” They run, pinged by more warning flashes—a breaker kern about to crack forever.

Right before offworld squads stomp the ground outside Harmony’s library, the code typhoon hits. Data floods Jun’s head, AI shouting errors. Jun’s neural wrap trembles—he wants to shut out that desperate lull: the low, human piece in hijacked lines, the soft goodbye. He sees their mentor’s last build pressed as a mustard-glow sphere, but also embedded in enemy code as if two Hajimes exist now. Is a mind split better than wiped? aicg-1507-img-5-6a17a56342fb6.png

No time for philosophy. “Team!” Risa yells. Air sirens churn. “It’s a double lure—Hajime got digitized, stalked, recycled into code. Can we recycle or do we risk?”

The klaxons plume. Harmony’s library windows break, code pouring over concrete. Reality buckles with the drive’s rebirth. Minato’s street eyes flicker, comms dropping system-wide. Jun makes one bitter call, launches their last virus key. Will they snap Ripple’s illusion, or just fuel its next owner? You might wonder: will freedom come, or more chains in new code?
