Ashes and Neon: Wake of the Silent Accord

City-state Permenance, 2124. Fluorescent light spills over wet streets at dawn. Ryusei, age 17, glides between sharp beams and twitching drones, his sleepless eyes raw from dust storms drifting through broken glass towers. He isn’t just another kid hacking janked holo-terminals for yen; Ryusei hunts the memory signature of his vanished sister, Sato, swallowed by the City Prophet’s sensor grid six months back. Why do our cities eat their own kids?

Kina bumps Ryusei’s shoulder in the snarl of a street market. Careful, quiet. “Heard the Accord’s Defense signals dropped north. Proxy drones—offline. You wanna lose your other ear?” Ryusei snorts, skims a bulltaped micro-PC into his coat. They both know hunting for system blind spots is desperate, but there’s hope on rare nights. Do you trust old alleyways or new code better?

The alley flickers uneven blue and orange. Nova—a stoic bike-tech with shoulders like protest shields, and circuit scars crossing his jaw—greets them inside. “Coders got a crack. EMP barbs, forty meters of clear. The grid can’t touch us inside…for maybe twelve minutes.” He hands the node timer to Ryusei. The timer’s burnt screen reminds Ryusei every blink could be the last honest countdown.

Plans take shape on trash-lit crates. Vocal drones repeat shifting regulations overhead. Synthesisers dull, sway in the air, limp and broken.

Ryusei turns to Kina, voice full of worry. “If we’re right, Sato is somewhere past district wall Q. The Prophet needs bodies pristine for data sync. But why not just reduce us all to figures?”

Nova smirks. “Faith machines breed their own kings.” Ryusei studies schisms in the city code: there’s a handful of routes, yet which is alive and which is smart bait?

Narrow ducts force the crew through. They duck behind combusted consoles, slip under radiant mesh screens jittering static, catch unlucky moments—a chorus of underground kids sings, echoes lost when a minder sled passes by, looping fear in each circuit.

Kina stops near a rusty ladder. Her foot bounces. “Ryusei, remember: no old stories about your dad today. We can’t keep history here.” His throat goes tight, but Nova’s crosswise smile throws him a rag. Joking on the edge won’t stop static burn or blackout, but some things just make pain easier.

The next mass sync is only hours away. Street people vanish soon after. Official logs print lines rarely meant for flesh.

As Nova propels Ryusei and Kina into breach, last sunlight ribbons fracture their silhouettes. Siphon crew shadows slip through razor mesh fence.

Past blocks ground raw by motorcycles, hallway ducts dark with synthetic moss, they reach a child’s scuffed sneaker hanging on rebar. Sato’s art, drawn inside, waits like a coded talisman: three linked stars, mappoint sketch witness to a living pulse. Is this another test by the City or Sato reaching back?

Nova signals hurry. “Grid echo on backup. They saw flare, or luck failed.” Kina grabs Ryusei’s wrist before a half-collapsed door.

Somewhere deeper, faint then rising, boots slap water. Protocol bots searching with empty audio commands. All three drop into water trickling below exposed ducts.

Numb toes. Nervous grins in the dark. Kina locks her jaw. “If we go further, there’s no warm air left. You ready?” Ryusei stares ahead at blackness humming with code. He nods hard.

Unexpected checkpoint—a skin suit scout patched with housings. Hollow digital visor shifts up for trust signals they don’t carry. Small tense scene. “Show memory tabs or mark Accord,” the enforcer purrs.

Nova pretends to tremble but steers. “Nothing here but water maps!” He baits the scout into searching somewhere else, unlocking seconds not minutes. They slide deeper trembling—or is that the resonance from ferrite pipes overhead?

Pipes open to an odd shallow chapel, spraypaint peeling advanced warning: Some run, none are free. Ryusei stares at glitch flowers—odd neon, each twisting toward hidden tunnels. A pulse glows in the wall. Sato? It almost feels like her signature. “We’re close,” Ryusei whispers.

Kina breathes through gritted teeth, thinking out loud. “What do you want your old world to be if you can’t fix this one?” Ryusei shrinks; the words cut bone.

Nova blurts, “You’re here—so fight their code, not the sun.” There’s colder air below. Data sync ripple releases a pulse. Clocks in street reset. Someone…something…knows now.

Final part: transfer point. Map ends at auto-locked core door six feet thick. A blur of old-style scratch code etched on its panel. Ryusei’s hands know this pattern; it is Sato’s private mark, used only between them. He holds his breath, lays his palm down, waits for the soft click.

The door cracks. Cold mist spills onto his sneakers. Is it Sato—alive, gone, taken by upgrades, or changed? Darkness inside moves—someone or something with glowing polyglass eyes arrives at edge of sight.

That’s where pauses tighten. Is it hope opening—or a smart trap sealed years before tonight?

Credits pulse over silent screen, night shivers outside district wall. Do you step in with Ryusei—should he risk the only real piece of past he’s still got?
