2102 stands as a point between shadow and light. The great city Sparkvale floats over an endless storm, soaked in neon. Below, engines hum; above, people hope.
It begins in a narrow alley beside a thundering relay station. Syra Mihane, an expert hacker, runs a gloved hand across the dataline on her wrist. She sighs, her breath cloudy in the humid air. Syra’s sight flickers: code runs over her eye. The voice of Kai, her adopted brother, pings. “Are you in position?”
“Just got here. You watch that scanner! I won’t save you if Vargas’s people spot us – again.”
Kai’s nervous laugh floats over the link. Lights flash in city’s bones. Are you the sort who ever looked up at dirty glass, and wished to see blue sky?
Cast and Motivation
Syra pulls up her collar. Her reason for fighting is simple: to get her old memories back. Two years lost from her mind, replaced by strange code and shaky dreams. And lately, quantum echoes haunt her.
Date Hiraga works his terminal across the enclave. He’s brash, bold, and claims to have hacked half the planet before he was sixteen. Does he tell the truth? Syra isn’t sure, but she needs Date’s wit tonight. Their quarrels are quick — a game of words. Wouldn’t you want a good partner on the wire?
Pollie Vargas rules a crooked section of Sparkvale. Her thugs, half human and half machine, are always hungry. She wants whatever Syra finds by dawn.
Setup: Shards of the Past
Kai hands Syra what looks like an old coin. The hack begins. Their goal: steal into the Mindfold archives, run by Vasetech’s eerie AI overseer. Syra flips the coin. It shimmers, splits into bits of light, and floods her display with glyphs that won’t hold still. Her hands shake. “Too old. Too deep,” she mutters.
Date’s voice: “Syra? You seeing this script? It isn’t Vasetech-standard.”
She frowns. “No. It’s older. I—I found this glyph on my old school notebook back when I was a kid.” For a moment both fall silent, as city thunder surges.
The Mindfold Zone
The city opens to depths newer than Syra wants to accept. Code ropes twist down lifts and concrete, deeper into Sparkvale’s core. They find the first lock: living glass, rippling with cryptic writing.
Syra marks her path and Date hums to a tune unheard by anyone else. Small turns matter here. The air tastes burnt. The arcane glyph in Syra’s HUD pulses, its color shifting. Every thirty steps she feels her head throb, her hand tremble.
“What’s that phrase you keep seeing?” asks Kai, biting his lip.
Syra takes a breath. “Thread there. Look away, it snaps.” She’s not sure now where the words come from.
All routes look the same. Keep pushing. Memory darts just out of her grasp, dangling like glass in floodlight.
Across the Edge: Digital Ghosts
Date stumbles onto a security patch. It isn’t like Vasetech’s cold drones. Something flickers, even grins. It speaks, something almost playful. It calls Syra by her childhood name – a fact she didn’t tell Date, not ever.
“How does it know that?” Syra whispers. The sprite skips and smiles. Is it friend, or is it shadow? It asks riddles she’s scared to understand.
“Only the quantum thread survives fracture–but will you cling, Mihane-24 v-kai?” it sings in scrambled tones.

Kai struggles to cut fake signals. Syra is busy watching that living glass shimmer. She sucks in air. Just for a heartbeat, a laugh echoes in her head – childlike. Her blacked-out memories itch cold into her mind.

Syra throws the hacked coin into the glass lock. Threads of light splay across the vault. Her vision swims. Deep in that network, names spark up. Faces she half-remembers. A flurry of sounds that taste of green.
