Edge of Gravity: The Sky Riders Arc
Kaito Hoshino lives for the rush. At sixteen, no cliff in Nagano feels too high. His best friend, Yuta Mori, always films the leaps. Every fall, every second of freefall, they post online by midnight. Have you ever wanted to fly as much as breathe?
The plot kicks off in April, when Reiko Amano, ace wingsuit racer, visits Kaito’s local club. She’s scouting talent for the Underground Altitude Bash—a secret competition for the best and boldest in Japan. The rules? Three events: base jump sprints, speed-gliding duels, and pure style tricks. Kaito’s drawn to push the boundaries. But for Yuta, record-breaking jumps could put a real mark on their channel.
Reiko singles out Kaito after his corkscrew descent over Eboshi Falls. “That dive’s pro level,” she says. Kaito lights up, Yuta records it all. Does fame trump fear, though? At school, the buzz spreads after their footage trends. Even shy Chika pops up to ask for lift lessons after school. Jokes circle: Who’ll break a bone first?
Team tryouts start. Competitors gather nightfall at Mt. Mitsumine’s ruined ski lodge. Wild LED-lit suits zip through the night. Reiko’s watching, stone-cool under thick goggles. Kaito pulls off a double front-flip with a spiral but botches his landing and tears his glove—and blood stains begin to seep through. Everyone gasps, but he grins wider. Yuta glances away—it’s never been this real, not even during last spring’s driftboard contest.
As training heats up, tempers do too. Daichi, the ‘King of the Gorge’ and crowd favorite, calls Kaito a ‘wannabe copycat’, spinning YouTubers as fakers. Kaito feels the sting but shoots one last line for the vlog: “Let them talk. We stick the drop.”
Reiko reveals that in past Bash finals, injuries led to bans. But sponsors call the shots now, paying big for viewed stunts. This tension spikes as Chika missteps handling a camera drone, and narrowly escapes disaster as it veers into Daichi’s path—splitting the group. Kaito grapples with blame. Did they lose their way chasing subscribers and records?
Late one night, Rain pounds the rooftop. Kaito can’t sleep, nerves snapping. He texts Yuta: “Can’t shake the shakes.” Yuta texts back: “That’s how you know it’s real.” The sound of wind matches his heart. How do you push forward without leaving friends behind?
Bash day dawns cold, shivering clouds brushing their ramp. Spectator drones hum overhead. Kaito draws the first slot. Yuta mugs for the camera: “We’re on—one life, one chance.” Inside the glide suit, every thump is thunder. He launches, slicing beside Daichi as the finish line blurs into mist. Will this win change anything?
The real shock comes after. Reiko whispers to Kaito at the finish: someone spiked the drones, risking sabotaged footage. Footage showing Kaito barely missing a midair drone. Did someone set this up? Was it just to win, or to send a warning? The story ends with Kaito and Yuta shaken but walking back up the mountain. “Don’t fear the heights,” Yuta says, “but maybe the people at the top.” Tune in next time. Where will risk lead them—and you—next?
