Shiro spent years as the quiet sub, watching his friends win while he sat with tangled thoughts. It’s not all bad, though. Some fans say Shiro’s got more light in his legs than most.
Did you ever stay up, awake for hours with a secret you want to share? Shiro did, almost every week. He wrote in his classic comic notebook, new plays in blue ink, then hid it quick if his sister Megumi peeked inside. “Does Shiro have what it takes this time?” you might ask. He thinks so. He fears not.
The Kagamihara Foxes prepare for the Grand Summer Quarterfinals. Their rivals, the heavyweight Gion Warriors, are famous for their showy passing game. Coach Nakada knows the Foxes lack the tough center-forward they need now. The team’s at its limit, tempers tight. Shiro pipes up at drills. “Why don’t we stop going wide every ball? Time skips, heartbeats go faster, then the world shrinks to fans shouting and sky swirling deep blue. Megumi leaps in the stands. The ball’s at Shiro’s feet again: last play, cup on the line, a shot curves up—then the keeper snatches it in mid-air.
And? That’s the cliff. Final score still tied. Overtime awaits. It feels the breath in your chest slows. Shiro sinks to his knees, eyes wet. Nobody says a word at first. You feel for him, right? Is luck lost— or is guts enough to start again?
