Ripple of the Blue Relay: A Summer of Swimmers

Episode 1: Into the Deep Blue

The hazy heat clings to Seikan City. Katsumi Hoshino glances at his half-filled captain’s clipboard. His goal is simple: rebuild the school’s swim club, win the summer meet, and show he can lead.
‘It can’t be this hard just to get four people in a pool,’ he mutters, stringing the lanyard between his fingers. Does everyone else feel this stuck at the start?

He corners Rika, the first years’ star, under bright poolside banners. ‘Join the relay, Rika. Your free stroke is fast—real fast.’
She pushes her short hair behind her ears and rolls her eyes. ‘Not interested. Swimming is just laps. I want track, not splash.’
Still, for one split second, she looks to the water, silent.

Katsumi notes her hesitation and makes a mental mark. Coach Tanabe yells out times, voice sharp and sure, but does anyone notice the way her left hand trembles over the stopwatch? As routines tick on, Morio and Takaya toss jokes from the shallow end, staying out of kickboard drills.
Do friendship and drive really mesh so easy, or is Katsumi out of touch with team spirit?

Episode 2: Treading Water

Katsumi pins a sign-up sheet to the hallway board. Hardly any takers. Morio nudges him, snorting. ‘Dead club walking?’ Takaya laughs but then mumbles, ‘Don’t sweat it, Cap. Some fish just hide at first.’
Is the fear of the water or something else stopping them?

Flashbacks flicker. Katsumi, age nine, sinks slow in deep chlorinated blue. Hands scrabbling in silence.
Katsumi’s mom: ‘Breathe slow, swim fast, keep your head high. The water helps.’
He remembers that, throat uneven, each stroke since tied to her words. Does technique come first, or does courage anchor it?

Rika starts showing up late, after track drills. She glances at form notes, frowns at her split times, mutters ‘I can do better.’
Katsumi stays patient. Some swimmers pop up slow. But pool-kings, he’s learned, bubble up from quiet doubts. aicg-7023-img-2-6a3025bd1535a.png

Episode 3: New Currents

Three weeks to meet. Rika races Takaya for kicks, wild grin, water flying. Takaya tries with lazy arms. She wins, shouting, ‘Stop sandbagging—or are you scared to lose for real?’
He grins, unbothered, and punches her shoulder light.

Coach Tanabe sets a new order: morning weights, extra butterfly sets, partner relays. The kids protest, then still do it. Under the benches, clipboard marks grow. Team times inch closer. Katsumi pulls Morio aside at dusk. ‘Why bother if you’re not going to care?’
Morio, chewing his ever-present gum, shrugs. ‘Don’t know yet, Cap. Not sure I can trust water after last year’s flood.’ Does shame fade in chlorine, or only deepen?

Episode 4: Deep Ends

News comes fast: rival Wako High snags Shun Yamagata, last year’s city silver. He’s on their relay. Coach sighs. ‘One anchor like Shun? They’re tough now. But you’ve all grown, too.’

The fear sets sharp. Katsumi dreams that night: stuck under a blue ceiling, their hands out of reach.
Morning after, Rika sits alone in the stands before sun-up. As Katsumi walks past, she grumbles, ‘Nerves suck. I want the water to quiet down.’
He sits beside her. Neither speaks. They stare ahead and hear the low echo of the pool filter, a blank calm still spreading ripple on ripple. Does silence carry comfort for you too, or just dread?

Rika: ‘You know, I never told you, but I didn’t join track. I walk here after school. Every day. It just… fits.’
Katsumi: ‘Different kind of blue. Mine’s messy too. Let’s swim for real this time.’
Does everyone find their own reason in the end, or just drift together all the same?

Episode 5: Surface Tension

A coin lands between two fate calls. The relay tryouts. Coach, cool sun hat shading her tired eyes, says, ‘You’re making a team, kids—but relay, you need more. You hurt, slow? The next must lift you.’

Takaya drops his towel, wraps on his cap, and cracks, ‘Bet we’ll slip up. But hey, I’ll swim last, anchor. Or you can glaze over me anyway, Katsumi?’

It starts—you can feel stakes in their voices. Legs beat at slack starts, arms grow sharp through drawn lines.
Morio whiffs a turn. Katsumi wins back with fast stroke, drawing Rika roaring back on the water. aicg-7023-img-3-6a30259bbc317.png

The final run. Stopwatch at ready. Coach’s lips purse as the seconds flash. All four hit the pad together. Almost at pace with Wako’s best.
Did the tides finally turn, or just tease?

Episode 6: Drift Before Dawn

Meet morning. Ali stretched blue banners hang above the entrance. The whole club smells like chlorine and iced coffee. Morio stands in silence, hand shaky as his old goggles fog up. ‘I almost quit after last year’s flood. What if I choke it again?’

Katsumi gives him a slight punch, grins hard. ‘Don’t. You’re here now. That counts.’
Competitors shoot them busy glances.
Rika flexes arms in prep; Takaya clowns, loud and brash so the others calm down a bit. Constant hum of starting block whistles buzzes.

The relay setup is revealed. Seikan’s up against Wako—Shun’s relay. The stands roar.
Back in the locker room, Katsumi’s mom texts: ‘Win or not, come home proud.’ These words knock the nerves thin.
They gather at poolside, feet lined up, water mirror-flat as morning light spills in. aicg-7023-img-4-6a30260ab69b5.png

Episode 7: The Dive

‘Set—ready!’ The gun snaps out.
Katsumi takes off, breath fast, heart like trapped thunder. Every flip-turn lands nearly. The noise blurs down except for the water-thump at each wall.
For the second leg, Rika shoots forward, arms knifing sharp through splash. She closes their gap on Wako by a meter. Are you gripping your seat yet?

Takaya’s turn is wild, splash all edge and guts. Coach bats her clipboard but half-smiles. Morio, up last, looks back just once. Slow exhale.
‘For the team,’ is all he whispers.

The anchors hit together—Morio and Shun—a matched tide, crowd on its feet.
The finish is crowded, noise so huge the clock becomes a blur.
On the scoreboard—Seikan falls behind by 0.18 seconds.

They all go quiet. Shoulder to shoulder they breathe out, mixed with thrill and ache. aicg-7023-img-5-6a30261eedc20.png

Episode 8: Medals and Shadows

Shun from Wako steps over, sweaty hair dripping, grins. ‘Close one. I haven’t raced sharp like that all year. Next time?’
Morio lifts his chin, not cowering. ‘Yeah. We’re gunning for gold next time, won’t stop. I don’t need more floods holding me down now.’

Katsumi collects his medal—silver, edge dull but pride not fading. Rika places a hand on his shoulder. Small, but steady.
‘You know the way the water moves?’ she says, more honest. ‘We all slipped in a little deeper. That’s win enough, for now.’

Buses sweep lots empty. Seikan’s four linger out by the pool rails, their ghosts mixed with bands of street light falling across the drained lanes.
Katsumi laughs—tired, pure, voice clear as a sharp line. ‘Let’s go eat. Next year’ll be gold, for sure.’ Cliffhanger: In the night’s soft air, an unfamiliar shadow lingers at the fence edge—slim figure with a purple swim cap, eyes on Seikan’s huddle. Who waits in the wings for next year’s relay?
