Blue Depths: The Trial at Aoshima Pool

Mio Nakahara never liked to draw attention, but there aren’t many places to hide when you’re in a pool. Not when every lane is full, not with a big swim meet just two days away.

Coach Shiraishi blew his whistle at exactly 6:03 a.m. “Pick it up, folks! This meet is no joke!” His words echoed down the tiled hall. Junpei nudged Mio’s foot under the water. “Mio, you’re in heat three this year. That’s big, huh? Everyone’s watching for you.” Mio shook her head but felt a small warmth cut through the cold.

Yui dashed into the lane next to them just as warm-ups began. She grinned. “Up for relay try-outs after practice, Mio? No bailing!” Mio, voice small but determined, whispered, “I’ll try if you do.” Was this the day she would swim for herself and not just to keep up?

The team began their laps. The morning smelled of chlorine and something sharper. Mio swam stores at her own pace, counting tiles at the bottom of the lane and feeling the rhythm. She gulped water at each tumble turn which Coach Shiraishi always noticed. But she got faster. Enough for him to scribble a note, for Junpei to call out, “Way to go, Speedy!” Do you ever wish you could feel time slow with every stroke you take?

Relays came after, teaming Mio with Yui, Junpei, and quiet Haruto, who almost never left his hood up unless he stood at the water’s edge. You could see Mio’s nerves spark in the way she fumbled her goggles, hands shaking. Even so, her leap off the block bit the surface like a thrown stone.

The relay started close. A rival club staged aggressive changeovers, shouts bouncing off the indoor pool roof. Mio messed up her hand-off with Junpei. When Haruto burst from the water coughing after his final leg, Coach Shiraishi’s clipboard came down—not hard, just with that sharp sound of reality. “We need to trust each other to beat Seiyou High. Chins up. Work together next time. You have more grit than you know.” aicg-10090-img-2-6a3d73e93ddb1.png

Mio realized she’d have to tell her dad about the meet. The hard part was always that pause, the time he spent looking anywhere but at her as she spoke. That evening at home, he washed dishes without turning. “You want me to come watch you, Mio?” His voice caught. “Will the bleachers even have room?” Mio paused and forced the answer. “It’s okay. Coach will videotape it.”

Replay dreams hit Mio at odd times. At night, she saw herself swimming through a darkness, grasping for the lane marker. In the dreams, she could hear voices Jules Verne might have written: metallic, far-off. “What if you fail?” one asks. Do you think fear drives most swimmers— or is it hope?

The pool at Seiyou roared as rows filled for preliminaries. Two lanes over, Satomi of Seiyou flexed by the edge, already known for her furious butterfly. “You moved up from lane seven? Not bad,” Satomi joked to Mio while stretching. Mio managed a shy grin. “It’s luck, I think.”

The timer buzzed. Mia’s heart hammered out a beat. The heat moved tight—Satomi cut the water with scary power. But Mio didn’t lag by much: beats fell back, breaths got harder, echoes vanished until Mio heard only her own body’s voice. She touched second. No one cheered at that first, but Coach Shiraishi clapped. “You gave us a reason to believe. Do that again tomorrow – bring two seconds down.”

After midnight, Yui wheeled up to Mio’s door. Old manga and ramen spilled off her handlebars. “I brought ‘Deep Blue Challenger’ for you. You never finish series, right? Let’s marathon between races.” Sitting together reading, none talked about the next day. Did you ever deal with the nerves that way?

For the finals, drums echoed poolside. Junpei painted blue stripes under Mio’s eyes. “You look cooler than usual!” Mio pinched her nose, grinning wry. Haruto handed over red gum. “Last year, this was my luck.” Mio chewed it, blowing a small bubble.

The gun cracked. Mio launched best as her body had trained. By midpoint, Satomi and Mio were less than a second apart. Satomi turned fast on every stroke, pushing the lane line, forcing Mio to swing wider to pass.

You can taste tension. The air was full of it. Family in the stands whispered. Coach just mouthed “Breathe!” aicg-10090-img-3-6a3d75c1bf819.png

Mio’s legs started to burn as she closed to within a fingertip on the last fifty meters. Lane lines blurred; the crowd booming, every heartbeat stamped right through her head. It was Satomi by one stroke. Mio’s hand touched — and snapped—on the finish pad only an instant late.

Shiraishi said, “You changed pace at the halfway point. No old fear held you back.” Satomi grinned at Mio poolside, hands out. “We’ll be friends, right? Next meet, same lane?” The handshake sealed it.

But outside, Mio watched as a stranger left the Seiyou office, passing a folder to Coach Shiraishi. “A scout – from Aichi Technical’s youth team. They’re opening a spot.” Junpei’s eyes popped. “Are you serious?”

Late that night, her father peeked in as she checked the team site on her phone. “I saw your race online,” he said. “You’ll swim again, yes?” For once, he waited by her door for an answer.

Mio held her breath. That scene lingers at the edge of the next morning: her hand over the pop-up message Can you make summer training camp in two weeks? It asked for an answer. Should Mio leave her small team behind for this?

The story closes on those twin lights – a phone screen and her father’s low, hopeful voice. She doesn’t answer yet. Would you, in her place? (Next time: Blue Depths, Rising Tide – Mio must choose which world to swim for.) aicg-10090-img-4-6a3d7460d33e7.png
