High above the mountain city of Braelia, dusk paints the sky with gold and smoke. Shiro Taneda stands alone on the roof of the old watchtower. Loose stones crunch as Taaru, his fire-mage best friend, joins him. Both boys peer at the far cliffs. Shiro’s black eyes never blink.
“Another raid, Shiro. Will your father send us this time?” Taaru whispers. “He always thinks we’re just kids.” Shiro’s fists clench. He hates waiting.
Braelia’s largest guild, The Obsidian Helm, has lost five teams to the same marsh this month. No one returns. Rumors swirl of pale dragons and stranger things: lampreys skulking beneath cloudy water, barrow-giants seen under the moon, a single purple flame at dusk.
After nightfall, Shiro sneaks into the council hall, slipping past guards by keeping to the shadowed beams. Masuro, Shiro’s father, shouts over the table: “We need new blood! But forget sending my son!” Old magic, tall egos. So many secrets here. Are grown-ups always this scared?
Taaru waits outside. The plan’s hurried but clear—slip away before dawn, through the bramble-tunnels north of the city. Shiro pauses, blade slipped under his cloak. He softly promises to return, but privately tells no one else. Why hide the truth from old leaders? Would you tell if you were him?
The Cindermire stretches for ten miles, steaming in places where hot springs rise. Carnivorous lilies snap shut on frogs. The earth smells of rot and fresh grass. Taaru makes a joke about getting a new pair of boots. Even Shiro laughs, just once.
But dragons don’t laugh tonight. Distant roars ripple through the mist as sulfur petals fall. Someone else stalks the marsh besides Shiro’s team.
Flash—steel and heat. Hana, local surgeon and the real brain, just stabs a shape that ambushed from the gloom. “Maybe it’s not just dragons,” she breathes, patching Taaru’s sleeve. “Weird footprints, circular, deep. Could be a beast I’ve not read in any book.” 
What would you do now, walk toward the howls, trust your memory, or hide? Hanna demands answers. Shiro sighs. “You said we’d find proof. Are you ready to put your heart where your mouth is?”
Ahead, in the dim moonlight, hundreds of skeletons twine around the roots of a willow that smolders fiery red. Shiro steps closer. There’s movement. Not just bones—pale masked faces; spirit-dragons, semi-clear, drift out from the marsh. Most are peaceful, weaving slow through the branches. But one, massive and black-winged, snaps its gaze on him. Fury? Maybe hunger. Its scales glint lead-blue. “You’re late,” rumbles a dry, crackling voice that earns startled glances. Old legends rarely talk back.
Hana whispers fast. “Is this our contact? We’re dreamers sneaking in; I don’t want to die here.” Shiro steps forward. “Your raids claim people. Why—why do you attack?” The dragon shakes muddy teeth free of weeds. “I protect the old promise, human. Obsidian or not.”
Suddenly a second dragon erupts from the marsh, all teeth and wormy, milky eyes. No-enemy? Or rival? Shiro moves between both—blade drawn—no easy choice. Only a fool takes sides too soon. Cut away from scene: tension high; truth or fight ahead. 
Cut to the council debating as dawn breaks back in Braelia. Masuro slumps under news: three more rangers fail to return. “If they’re lost, so are we,” a guildwife murmurs.
The cliffhanger: both dragons encircle Shiro’s group. The black-winged one wants words, maybe peace—his challenger snarls, forked tongue wet with marshdamp. A simple mistake, spark in the wrong place, could set hundreds of years aflame. “You trespass. State your heart, young ones. Now.”
Nowhere left to run. Shiro thinks of his family, eyes locked on the nearest nightshade blossom. The episode ends mid-breath, the team frozen but not bowed, the terrible fangs of choice waiting.
