Episode Arc: Ashes of Tomorrow – ‘Arching Skies’
A grim sunrise paints the metal ruins of old Tokyo. Hana slips through shadows, shoes crunching broken glass. It’s habit by now. Every day in this dead city, you learn something new or you don’t come home. The towers, once bright, lean at rough angles, sunlight peering through endless gaps.
Her goal? Simple enough—find her brother, Jun, lost since the Black Season ended rain three years back. Hana’s not alone. Raion, with wild red eyes touched by too much loss, drags his bat along stone. Yurika hums odd tunes to mask her nerves, her glasses fogging where mask meets scarred lips. Sometimes, the city itself hums a drone, like it might wake up at any second. Eerie, isn’t it? What would you do in such ruins?
Outside what’s left of Mitsui Market, a kid in yellow sneakers needs help. Food is scarce and trust is thinner, but Hana doesn’t leave folks hungry. Raion grumbles, “What if it’s a set-up?” Hana asks, “Would you leave them?” In the empty streets, choice means survival, but who stays humane when the world feels used up? 
Supplies run low, so the three split up. Raion heads north by the old train lines, swings at rusty cans out of habit. He finds a burned car, smoldering—weeks old, no threat. A narrow miss; often that’s all you get around here. Ghosts, you sometimes wonder if they’re one’s who remain, or those left behind.
Back at camp, Yurika jots yesterday’s news in a battered notebook. She’s tracked barometric drops, acid smog patterns, seed bank rumors. Some pages bear wrinkled handprints from rain that never dried right. “If we move east, we may catch rain, safer than west’s trackers,” she says. The group debates. Jun’s last message, a single line—“white bridge”—rings clear in Hana’s mind. What would your clue be?
Risk pulls them toward the city river. The bridge is shadowed, black and broken, a nest of draped cables. Hana calls out, voice scared and brave at once. An echo comes—low, painful. They cross iron beams, step by step, hearts knocked by every creak. On the other side, dust swarms, and shadows shift: two figures appear. Allies or threats? The answer’s unclear—the new woman has an armband, “Union East.”
A standoff starts, words fumble like old coins across stone. Her name: Seina. Tough, tight smile, worn armor made from six kinds of old tech. Smart move. “You lost someone?” she asks, looking hard at Hana. “Mine too. Maybe I can help, maybe I want something back.” There’s grit in her tone but something soft too. Do you gamble on someone like this?
Night pushes cold winds through gaping walls as the small troop strikes camp near a public library overgrown with wild beans. Raion rests, senses still sharp. Hana pulls the kid in yellow shoes close for warmth; the world sometimes gives you odd families. Wolves howl up near the north road, yet no one rises. Hunger steals from courage until there’s only resolve left. Who guards hope here? 
Dawn cracks, loud with new drones roving onion-shaped fog. Seina explains—Union scouts track rebels, drag them for spreader jobs in the hydro domes. “I know a short way to the white bridge. Helps you, helps me.” Trust comes easy to some, but Hana squints, tests every word that drops from her new friend’s lips. Group splits: Yurika stays with the supplies, Hana follows Seina. Their steps rhyme among crunching stone.
Cameras blink along the bridge. Guards, not human, click from roof-tops. Raion’s been shadowing—a real guard dog, that one. Suddenly, steel spikes erupt down—trap! “Move!” yells Seina. They duck, falling onto a rusted barge below. Pain blossoms and smoke stings, but Hana spots boots—a hint of Jun’s red laces?
The group is split, alarm blaring through the city. New voices call: Union hunters have found them, guns glinting dull under the gray sun. Now there are choices to make: help Jun if he’s really near, or run? Every second looms. Can any plan save them?
Last frame: Jun’s shoe bobbing in a muddy pond, hand slipping out of sight as Seina grabs Hana’s shoulder.
