Synopsis
Picture a world that’s lost its glow. The air holds dust, the sky never turns blue. Faded towers split the skyline. Most people are gone; those that remain keep to the shadows, quiet and wary. Meet Akio. He’s sixteen. He wears his school coat out of habit, torn on one sleeve. His goal? To find his big sister Ayame. Months back, Ayame left with rumors of a working radio tower out past the city’s edge. Akio won’t believe she’s dead. He can’t. Not until he knows.
On the way out of camp, Akio checks on Sora—short, smart, fearless with a tool kit. You wonder if she’s hiding what scares her. Sora snaps, “Move or we’re not coming back by dark.” Their friend Dai, always hungry, throws a rock at an empty barrel to chase off crows. A routine morning? Maybe, but their uneasy jokes cling to worry like dust on old shoes.
Conflict boils fast when a loud rumbling shakes an empty street. Akio sees masked figures combing through old shops. Raiders? No, something’s different: these people aren’t armed, just carry small cases, and plants spill from their wagon. “They’re gardeners,” whispers Sora. “No way,” bites Dai, “Nobody shares out here.” The threat takes a new shape: not all strangers want to take what isn’t theirs. Could they help, or pose risks the group can’t see?
Sora argues. She wants to follow the plant-carriers—food is running out, and seeds could matter more than any can they find. Akio says his sister comes first. Dai says they’ll split up and meet at the bridge before dusk. “Trust gets you killed here,” Dai scoffs. Sora fires back: “So does losing hope.” What choice would you make in their place?
Akio tries to leave alone, but Sora catches up. “No one can find anyone if we’re lost ourselves.” Reluctantly, they both shadow the new travelers. A tense stalking—dodge rubble, duck behind cars, mind every sound. Questions slide in. Could these gardeners know news from the signal tower? Is there danger if seen?
Sora studies them, notices a rare badge on a man’s shirt. It’s a sunburst. Only the tower crew used it before the world’s end. She tells Akio. His pulse jumps, torn between hope for Ayame and fear they’ll tip their hand too soon. Have you ever felt a moment that bends your being in two?
Dai, searching alone by the bridge, runs into another group—three, masked, but rougher than the others. They barter, offer stale crackers for old batteries. Soon things heat up, words sharp as knives. Dai tries to walk but is shoved down. The bridge trembles as shouts echo off concrete. Any noise pulls dangers new and old—a swarm of wild dogs comes near, drawn by voices and a scrap tossed from the barter. “Why’d you throw that—now they’ll follow!” a raider spits.
Back with Akio and Sora, the gardeners stop at a crumbled greenhouse. They slide old glass off brown earth. Sora risks a look closer, whispering, “No, they’re saving sprigs of nightflower. That’s… that’s like, medicine.” Akio peels away, thinking he spots his sister’s bright scarf on another person. Was it Ayame? Only sun sparkles off red cloth—a false hope, then disappointment. That’s rough to handle, right?
Gi—those quiet moments seem fragile. Then a harsh whistle sets nerves on edge. Dai is running flat out for the far side of the bridge, a dog snapping at his heel. Sora drops everything to fetch a shiv; Akio slings a stone, hitting the hound’s ear. Sora stabs downward, ending the chase, both shaking as the dust settles. The gardeners saw the fight. Their leader, Ms. Fushi, greets them: “Hungry or just bold?” Sora closes her hands around her tools with care. “Only looking for seeds,” she answers. Ms. Fushi studies Akio, pain hidden in her lines. “Plenty lost girls have passed our way,” she answers, not cold, but not hoping for much. “Some climbed to high ground. Some… gave up. We harvest, we risk, we cure. That’s all.”
They sit with the gardeners for a meal of wilted greens and rare slices of root, voices low, trust measured by slow glances, every small action judged. Sora helps patch a shovel. Akio watches for scarf or sign but sees none. Dai shares a busted flashlight. The meal’s not much, but hope, for once, is not rationed in total.
Evening bleeds in. The team must decide: join the gardeners, head east toward the greenhouses, or race alone for the radio tower at dawn. Do seeds for tomorrow outweigh the slim thread that Ayame, or anyone, waits at the tower? How often do choices mean one life over many?
As stars try and fail to pierce smog, Akio steps outside camp for night air. He picks up the false red scarf. His thoughts roam. In a sleep-starved fog, a radio’s scratch breaks the night: Secrets in decoded skips. His sister’s voice? Or just static in the end?
