Star Echoes: The Phantom Drift
Arc 1 – The Shattering Comet

Nebula Station never sleeps. You can see fireflies of shuttle lights weave and vanish out each porthole, glowing against the black. Kaito Izora, fifteen and sharp-eyed, gazes sunward from his tiny bunk window, boot tapping the metal wall. ‘Six days till my exam,’ he whispers. He wants—no, needs—to pass the Helmsman’s course, to win a spot at Exploration Fleet, since it’s the only ticket off-deck. Across the aisle in a crammed bunk, Mira Tahlia works a tangled circuit, muttering about wires. She jokes with Kaito, ‘What will you do when your fancy exam locks up? Call an engineer?’ Their friendship is both fire and silence. Mira doesn’t pretend to care about exams, but shadows flick through her eyes when she watches recorded launches.

Out in deep orbit, rumors fly faster than meteors. A ghost signal blips from the Oort Array. Station admin waves them off, but chatter grows: talk of a split comet, of the signal riding its icy wake.

The night before exams, Kaito can’t sleep. He shuffles, checks the sky projector—once, twice—in his room. Outside the hall, half the crew is awake. News: Astro-nav, red-alert status, directs minor ships to standby loads. Then Toki Ren storms in—second year, station star-watcher—rambling, ‘You two. Comm arrays picked up the drift again. Real, this time. Captain says B-block shuttle crews are suiting up.’ Kaito and Mira exchange a look: That odd grab of fear and taste for risk. Would you hop a shuttle at a stranger’s call?

‘I’m going. We’re rigged to scan,’ Mira declares, before Kaito gets his protest out. It’s too late to think small, he realizes.

Kaito, half in panic, sneaks out after Mira, digging an old ship’s badge from a left-over coat pocket. He doesn’t mean to wind up in a real mission, but there he is—half-numb—when Ren shoves a helmet his way. Isn’t there some rule about jumpers being older? They climb onto the Falcon shuttle, seat belts buzzing. Pre-launch checks; Kaito forgets half of what he’s seen in mock tests. Mira quips, ‘Want the manual now?’ He can’t stop shaking, but he’s not alone. Do raw hands in space get scared, too, he wonders?

Through grav-loop arcs, the Falcon tails the drift. Sensors ping. Revelations hit fast—shards of processed metal blink in the icy dust, not random stardust. The signal folds into a pattern as crew patches emails and scans. The comet isn’t only rock—it’s crystal-strapped tech. ‘Not native,’ Mira murmurs.

Soon, a hooked twitch behind the comet shapes into a battered object, firing data spikes on repeat, old TF codes cleared for hull age. Years too old for any Fleet gear. Ren and Porto (crew mentor) plot flight paths around sudden wild ice-currents, sharp bumps rushing them close to fragments. Questions slam the cockpit: Who sent this chunk back to Sol data lanes? What’s hidden here? Tokky pelts comms with wild guesses—trackers, thieves, or explorers who missed their marks.

When handling the object, clamp arms jam. Ice cracks. There’s movement. Inside the hull, a flash of soft blue glistens where there should be nothing except hull cracks and frost—layers of frozen gel shimmer, pulsing. Small living motes whip through the cracks. Ren snaps at Mira and Kaito, ‘Bio contamination, don’t touch!’ But it’s too late. A skin of the gel tears loose, stuck to a cuff. Mira stares, freaked—half in awe—half afraid she missed something vital. ‘Ship’s whispering. Or is it breathing?’ she jokes, but nobody grins. Have you ever come face to face with mystery you wish you hadn’t touched?

Kaito clicks the helmet cam: blurry views, then weird bands stretch across the readout. The blue motes pulse to the signal code, mirroring data itself. It’s like an echo not just in space—inside their minds. Stronger images flood in: flashes—stars lined up, odd dials, a three-moon world not in local charts. Not simple coordinates, something else’s eyes—looking.

The shuttle rumbles: ice breaks. The Falcon wobbles, a control cluster starts to short. They can’t jettison for fear of seeding unknown strands across orbit traps. Mira snaps, ‘Hold firm!’—she’s auto-piloting and rerouting power, while blue gel threatens to jump vents.

The Admiral beams in over hardline, voice tight. ‘You kids fixing this? Stand by!’ She won’t tell all, but there’s something they’re hiding. Competitive shuttles close: Exo-hunters in war-fox painted ships, greedy for salvage. Do secrets ever stay safe in space?

That night, stuck in airlock, bio sensors pinging, Kaito and Mira watch the blue glow pulse quieter. Now the signal forms six clean syllables—the backbone of a language repeat. They glance out to see if the others hear. Seriously, does anyone else sense that the comet brought them more than trouble?

Kaito admits, ‘I thought I’d just pass that exam.’ Mira, blinking, stares down at her gel-stained wrist. ‘Feels like we unlocked doors we can’t shut.’

Station control orders Falcon locked down pending new safety checks. As alarms sound, Falcon’s onboard displays flash a view not from their cams—a far world, two suns rising. The blue wisp on Mira’s sleeve curls like fingers, then forms slow blinking symbols that match what glowed from the comet core.aicg-4860-img-3-6a25bba3e01a7.png

The feed cuts static. Over squad comms, Ren curses. The ship—locked, sensors off—shudders. Is it alive, or spelled, or just infected tech?

Kaito, voice thin, asks—’What if the next message isn’t just a map, but a call?’ No one has an answer.

To be continued…
