Blazing Pitch: The Nine’s Resolve
Kota Hoshino laces up his blue and white cleats, worry in his eyes. Once hailed as the “king of counterattacks”, Kota’s spark has dimmed. The whole Musashi High team feels it. There are quiet glances at practice, tension filling the close autumn air. Even Riku, sharp-eyed midfielder, keeps glancing back at bold but silent Kota. “Are you sleeping on the field?” he snaps, hoping it’ll shake Kota up. Kota shrugs, lips tight.
Things crack wide open when a flyer arrives: Kiryu Technical, cross-town rivals, have challenged them to an underdog match as an exhibition for a massive festival crowd. Riku starts practicing harder. Akane, quick-footed winger, says, “You won’t beat Kiryu worrying about Kota all practice”. Riku asks straight out, “Kota, your head still in the game or not?” Kota kicks the ball aside. “It’s just Kiryu. One match.” The team doesn’t say it out loud, but everyone knows what a loss here would do. How would you pick yourself up if your best mate disappeared inside himself?
Masa, the level-headed captain, pulls Kota aside beneath glaring halogen lights after a long practice. His voice quiet: “I’m not here to coach you into genius, Kota. I’m your friend. What’s eating at you?” Kota looks away. “Six months ago, I broke my ankle right here. I can’t trust it anymore.” There’s a beat. “Did you think Riku never got scared after surgery last year? Or Akane after her brother hopped the train and left her alone in goal?”
The festival day comes windy and fierce. Flags flap loud above stadium steps. Musashi team lines up opposite Kiryu, glare for glare. The whistle sounds sharp. Kota jogs listlessly at first. The stands go quiet after Kiryu slams the first shot past their keeper. Riku squares his shoulders, shoving Kota gently. “Five years I’ve played with you, Kota. Play football like your life depends on it, just this once!”
Second half. Musashi losing hard: two-nil. The coach’s voice grates from the sideline: “You either wake up now, or you wait till next year to feel grass again!” Kota bites his mouthguard, sweat trickling. In this instant, his mind flickers back to the empty hospital, then to nights racing Riku beside street lamps. He whispers, “No more doubts. I’m done being scared.” Music blooms through loudspeakers. The blue and white swirl around him, like the old streetlights. He bursts forward.
The pass from Riku comes just right. Kota’s movements snap alive, dodging two beefy Kiryu mids. The ball sticks under his boot as if it wants this too. Akane ghosts down the wing, yells for it, but Kota barely glances up––chips a looping cross straight to her left sneaker. The net flips. Two-one now, but hope flashes kindling-bright.
Did you ever watch your friends yanked from the brink? Kota’s eyes blaze as Musashi wakes. Riku pounces on the reset pass and threads it through three players. Last five minutes: all noise now. Kota finds himself dribbling up the pitch again. Kiryu’s defenders box him in, but in his mind he’s light again, feet unchained, racing city blocks with Riku at dusk. He fakes left and slices towards goal, the crowd yelling. Boot and ball meet. The scene blurs: was it a shot or a spark? In the stands, Akane’s face splits wide with awe. The goalkeeper dives but misses, fingers not quite brushing the leather.
Fans roar through wind and rain spitting out of dark clouds. The score clicks: tied, two against two. Whistle shakes the rafters––extra time. But Kota’s heart pounds, alive, not perfect but fearless. He glances at Riku, both catching their breath. “We’re not done yet,” Kota says. Riku grins, shoulders trembling. Are you holding your breath too?
