Prologue: Whispers in the Ironwind
As dusk swept over Gearfall Valley, Robin stepped out on the open skybridge, brass boots echoing against steel rafters. The wasteland below spun wild with dust and stories. Robin couldn’t see where the gears met the sea—fog blocked the edge. “Looks tough down there, huh?” asked Nira. She wiped oil from her face, a flash of red hair flickering in the breeze. Robin gave a tight nod, eyes fixed on the horizon. Was it dread, or fire in her heart?

Act 1: Contract in the Oilworks
The main quest landed in broken code: ‘RETRIEVE CORE UNIT – AGELESS FORGE.’ Not much else. Robin knew this sounded like a death trip to most. She was used to risk—anything for her brother Kian, missing for weeks. Their fixer, Acht, briefed the crew by hollow table. Maps like spider-webs crisscrossed their home. “The Labyrinth under Gearfall doesn’t permit even drones for long. You won’t get paid if you don’t make it out with the Core. But… you might find traces of Kian if you’re sharp.” Both a warning and a dare.
Robin, Nira, and third team member Patch—their taciturn drone wrangler—loaded spark torches, checked filter masks, double-sealed guides for pulse interference. They set off through the maintenance shaft behind the reactor grid—unknown, unused. Spikes creaked overhead. The world clanked to shreds below.
Act 2: The Descent Begins
The under-vents were close, blind, and wound forever. Gear-blooms spun by; sometimes near, sometimes far. Nira tried to break nerves. “Hey, Patch, you awake back there?” His reply gave no clue: “Sensors show new footprints. Nothing else.” Their suits brushed wires and oil moss. Robin’s chest pounded with every stray sigh of wind. It felt off, like eyes watched from switchless shadows.
Sudden twist: the team hit a vertical drop carved by some old flood. “We go in together. If one falls, we pull them back.” It became a mantra. Twelve stories down: patchwork bridges, slag stacks rising beneath—a manmade jungle grown wild after generations. Sparks flickered. Robin’s hands didn’t shake; fear pushed down by need. Would you keep light in your eyes this deep?
Act 3: Gearborn Trials
Labyrinth denizens called Binders met them inside the turning corridors. Partners to old automata, the Binders shifted between cold metal and hot blue flame. Robin tried to talk. Instead, the Binders warned: “Once lost here, you’re scraps. Logic rewires itself. You’ll give up pieces of yourself before the end.” Nira grinned, eyes wide bright under the mask. “Not if I can help it. Wanna bet I won’t win your challenge?” Puzzles got harder, stakes higher. Robin answered without words, moving with clean speed through spinning hazards. 
Not everyone cleared them untouched. Patch took a shard to the arm—Nira dragged him behind a pipe bend and dressed the wound. For a moment, Robin paused. Were any answers worth this? Her earpiece chimed—Kian’s voice, distorted and faint: “Don’t… core…save…me.” Her fist tightened. She could smell salt and iron in the still air. Would you trust your direction, or check your fear?
Act 4: Sacrifices in the Mechanica Maw
The prize, the Ageless Forge, waited past an old defense array—a riddle-room locked behind age-worn doors. It flashed scenes from Robin’s past: her brother’s smile, lost family dinners, a sunrise missed for extra cash. The door voice echoed: “What drives you, Robin Olt?”
She stumbled, mind split. Nira answered first: “We run forward—no time to regret.” Patch, sweat streaked against rust, slammed his palm to console: “Life’s cracked here already. Don’t stop for ghosts.” Left to face herself, Robin steadied her words. “I want to live and bring my brother back, no matter how heavy the route. I’ll give my will, but not my heart.” The door blinked green.
Inside the main room, stray power arcs leaped out at them. Robin spotted the Core—a tiny twist of silver hovering over a shadow pool. They had to hurry; engines shook the world apart, waves of segmented pipes roaring below. There was still no sign of Kian.
Act 5: The Last Boundaries
Robin grabbed the Core—sirens howled loud, puzzles collapsed in motion. The team escaped down chains, timing every move. Doors shut behind them. Forced into a tight air channel, their only option was to launch the archaic canister holding the Core up through a vent chute. “What if this was all to get us killed?” Nira gasped. “Would we have done it anyway?” Robin didn’t answer. Too tired to speak, too near to quit.
A final attack: Sinter, the massive mechanical sentinel, ambushed—shield array bursting open. It pierced the shield just as Robin hurled both the Core and an emergency glyph out of the closing platform. Nira pushed her and Patch through the last hatch—almost too late.
The breach sealed. Alarms faded. They looked up, blood on Nira’s glove, scars open. Kian’s ragged voice buzzed in the comm: “You’re so close… one step left…” Signal faded out. Robin stared at ruined palms, Core held tight—closer to her brother, maybe.
