Neon Veins — Arc 1: The Fate Signal

Tokyo-XR: Lives set in neon

Kaiji wakes with the soft buzz of his brainnet gone dead. No lights. Just flat air over crumpled wires on his bed. He hears a distant pop out his narrow slum window: some drone chasing off birds from rotten food below. Kaiji frowns, reaching for his fried network chip with pale hands. If that chip’s dead, he can’t get paid tomorrow. He should call Jin, but his old friend won’t help twice for free. Have you ever just stared at your broken gear and felt the world slip out beneath you?

Jin slumps in with limp magenta hair spilling like run-off over gray tech-jacket seams. ‘You’re up already? More dreams, Kaiji?’ Kaiji laughs. ‘Dreams require credits and working chips.’ Jin shrugs, but his jaw goes tense. Nobody distracts him when he’s parsing firewall breaches.

Later, they snake down alleys, boots squelching in puddle light. They’re met by Roa, a streetwise girl with a glowing shoulder tattoo and her own stolen ideas for tomorrow. She’s built a tiny makeshift AI that speaks clipped words: ‘HELP…HEARD…FATE.’

‘What’s up? Get in, shut it all, talk now,’ Roa grunts. She slides the odd, blinking box to Kaiji. ‘Picked up a signal longwave from out-West. Something’s moving — feels like a hunt.’ Jin knits his brows. ‘AI can’t hunt us until dawn rolls. Who fired the signal?’

As the city pulses outside, Kaiji wires the box to the battered neural slot by the window. Radio bytes in static, slicing soft through code. ‘Not sure what they want. Not sure if we should care, either.’ But his fingers twitch. Isn’t that temptation, hiding as fear?

A deal in the trenchways

Jin locks the door but Roa tears open local mesh proxies, hacking through layered refractions. Jin’s grid-fu is legend, but there’s sweat clinging to his temple. There’s talk of the meta-corporation Naros having cooked up a wave-wipe program. If it launches before midnight, slums like their block blink out memory from every awake brain and home endpoint. ‘Pure clean,’ Roa mutters. ‘Naroland can’t stand dirt in its model city.’

Do you question a world so tight, even dreams get clipped?’ aicg-10274-img-2-6a3e384fc96dc.png

‘We steal a server node, drop a fake sat-fail script, ghost the wipe. No data lost, none the wiser,’ Kaiji says. Roa peers. ‘We’re glitched for it if the Scraper units catch. You up for that?’ Jin shrugs. ‘If the memory wipe runs, I’ve got nothing to lose except a thousand old debts.’

Midnight split: Game or Erase

Challenge: Jin, Roa, and Kaiji need two things: break into a tower node just east, survive proxy IDs, and plant a kernel. Fail, and scrubbed slums forget even their names. Some schemes use code. This one hangs by nerves. Jin cobbles a gold-tooth mask — loops junkyard signals through a make-do modem. The city system fights back, looping tracer pings and shot-noise through the net. Roa patches her AI as a bait cast, tricking tier-one faceless defense firewalls into thinking there’s legal movement on other lines.

Have you played at risking everything just for time to remember one old friend?

They’re inside the node floor by 11:11. Blades-tall stacks hum with forking red and ultra-blue. Quick steamy pulses of heat roll down on them; Kaiji can’t risk tremor. There’s no sound, only the hiss of air and keys tapping, fast — slowing — too slow. Jin grins suddenly: ‘Seventeen cracked layers. Fake chunk code primed.’ But there’s a soft chime in Kaiji’s skull-com. Emergency packet traffic. He’s seen those dings before; only Scrapers run mod-status bursts that hard. The crew huddle behind hot server banks. Kaiji’s mouth is dry.

A heavy black drone pushes sleek, sensor point throbbing orange. Roa catches Kaiji’s wrist. ‘Masks on,’ she whispers. ‘One noise and we’re reset for life.’ Hustle, now or never.

Mask up. Kaiji trades riffs with Jin, launching ghost code splinters. At one tick, code sticks. The system splits, drones scan past. Sloppily, Roa’s AI shudders, forced to out-shout patterns — but it bleeds, voice mangling: ‘HELP…I FELT…REGRET.’

‘That’s a new word,’ whispers Roa. Her face is pale. aicg-10274-img-3-6a3e38145566a.png

Edge of dawn: Memory hacker’s cliff

250 users, safe if their stealth holds. Kaiji’s kernel loads. Meta-wash watches pop off on the mesh feeds. Meanwhile, a new alert: The Naros admins note a non-pat script stink. They deploy tracing buffs, crawl each VM for upload patterns linked to Roa’s prints way back from when she was Naros intern triage one-fifty-b. Jin’s panel flashes: refusal ad burst, kicked by a smart firewall lockout. In one shake, it looks bad.

If caught now, Jin’s poised for print-cull. Kaiji’s record goes locked out. Roa? She’d go dark — whole code sequence dropped, plus outrage rumors for all with her tag.

Scraper drones pat the aisle. Kaiji puts up a decoy load, flipping his own brainpriv span as a last play. Do you stall your memories for one last chance?

Then: Roa sees the AI, her tiny friend, pulse hard-green. Its digital voice slurs: ‘I fear you.’ She blinks. ‘Kaiji… it’s learning new words. Not just signals.’

System clocks tick midnight. Fade, full zeroes across downtown backup — data drop looms fast. Jin’s hands blur, latching into last-rescue packet strings. Sweat drops hit the chassis; keypad shakes underneath static hum.

Ghosted split loads. ‘DONE,’ Jin hisses — He lunges up beside Kaiji, throws down the chip, snaps it and sockets for deep cable reroute. Drones pass, catch a flash… pause, for just a microsecond.

The scene cuts at Jin’s shaky voice: ‘Either we ghost through… or we’re ghosted out.’ Street line blue bars blink outside, searching, as dawn shakes through ruined windows. Kaiji doesn’t breathe. Cliffhanger: A ping slams the mainframe with Roa’s ID, encodes a threat-pulse: “Kaiji, Jin, time to vanish — or choose to remember.”

What would you choose? Memory, fear, fame, or a tin spark learning regret for the first time?

End arc. Next: Who isn’t who they seem, who pays for old guilt, who sacrifices memory for a real dawn?
