Moonlit Fragments – The Outskirts of Arcella

Synopsis

The air outside Arcella hits like a frozen mirror. Shiro’s breath curls up in ribbons, swirling around her sky-blue hair. Her boots crunch on ground split by old magic. It’s not a quiet world, but right now it feels stolen from itself. Why do any of us roam strange ruins just for the hope of a scrap, or maybe a hint of yesterday’s world? Do you find thrill hidden in what others forgot?

Shiro came here because she needed answers. She raised her pack, glancing at Eno trailing behind her, chafing at every stop. ‘You’re sure we take east?’ he asked, not bothering to hide nerves. Clouds curled. Shiro checked her compass—it didn’t work here, never did since the collapse, but habits die hard. ‘East until the break. If we miss it, we get nothing.’ Eno sighed, muscles tight. Shiro’s self-promise: I’ll keep everyone else out of harm, even if it hurts. Have you sworn something that bold for friends or kin?

The Outskirts feel like memory painted with too-bright clay. Mag-towers sag in odd angles. Glass butterflies flash in the dusk. The Dream Cartographer—a map that finds lost places, not just routes—waits somewhere close, wedged in old steel and glass. Why chase that? Answers, luck, and an urge to fix things smudged and broken. The two turn a corner and collide with Jin and Hane, the difficult twins. ‘So you got lazy again, used our map,’ grins Hane, waving parchment. Jin shrugs, holding his crowbar like a dare.

The four don’t mince words. The Cartographer is beacon and bait—the clans want them running rings while spies tail every step. Hane whispers, ‘That flare last night.’ She sounds like she swallowed fear. ‘It’s brighter here today.’ Eno groans. Jin doesn’t even blink. When they reach a broken dome, Shiro says, ‘Leave bags by the pillar, only lights and rope.’ Torch’s flame catches a symbol: a crescent within a jagged gear. Jin chokes, just for a second. ‘Clan Tokonu,’ he mumbles. Shiro’s jaw sets. ‘We go on.’ aicg-5708-img-2-6a28f0fd17529.png

A platform gives, crashing Eno and Hane on sharp glass. The two scramble, swearing—no obvious hurts save pride. Jin quietly brushes flakes off his jacket. Two rats, like animated clockwork, dodge under a smashed door. Shiro tells Eno, ‘You run first now. You spot for us. Don’t argue, do it.’ Her tone—they all obey. Under the painted moon-shards is the first puzzle: six posts and broken jewels. ‘Think,’ says Jin. ‘The Clan’s sign is a trap.’ Eno pushes two posts—brick dislodges, thuds below. Oops. Nobody moves for a breath. ‘A pattern, not a lever scheme!’ groans Hane.

They arrange posts by colors, echoing little moon cycles—the lights flicker. Door thuds open, as if bored by their logic. Down tight stairs, a hissing scrip stirs on an intact display. Half a map fills the table, blue waves crawling over raised letters—impossible arcane script. Hane’s hand hovers. ‘We take rubbings, not scraps. No spell on us, no tracking if we don’t touch hard.’ A sphere whines as someone’s foot steps back: outside.
‘How many?’ Eno mouths silently. Shiro points: three, sharp-clad scouts from a rival Seton clan. Jin signals to dim lights. Heat might’ve made their nerves burn out, but they knew the sound: cloak brushing gateframe.

Jin shakes his head. ‘They’ll take the map after us, or worse, cut us here to keep word from leaking.’ Often, it’s easier to run, but Shiro looks at Eno and sets her jaw. Hane rewinds a bit of rope under the table. Here, Jin sparks quick—the map is divided into hidden shells: pop one open, hide a bit, pretend it broke already to buy them time. The two twins set the posts. Eno covers the exit with wreckage. Shiro—details engine—memories flicker from her older brother, lost to one wrong choice and old maps like this.

They break one shell, stow a bit of the real map on Hane’s back, and let the ‘trap’ shield the rest. Footsteps thud close. Hane mouths, ‘Are we guts or fools today?’ Shiro answers, ‘Both. Down vents!’ They wriggle into the collapse, inches from enemy boots pounding. Dust fills everything. You feel grit on your tongue reading this? Jin whoops, hand caked gray. Eno follows, shaking, but safe.

Sliding through a broken vent, scraped knuckles, shoulders jammed, the four slow, silent. The map piece already shows two things clear: a point marked with old king’s codes, then a stamped name in plain glyphs—TRAITOR’S LARK. Outsiders sometimes see this town’s sharp edge—a story written, with nobody spared. Shiro holds the leaf-thin curl tight in her fist. Their daylight’s gone, just steady pulses from the faint crystal in Eno’s hand. Distant, rough voices grumble. They’re not out, not yet.

Trading eye-silent plans, Jin reaches the edge first, proud. ‘We cut through store cellars, out by the Twin Steeples if it’s not caved.’ A hint of sour air hit them—the outlands seethe, rain in faint lines on pale stone. But far above, across skyline, four blue beacons flicker—the Seton sign. They tracked the crew using a stolen pin in Hane’s braided hair. Paranoia stings bad when it’s not fantasy.

No option to rest, but no true escape either. Hane studies the lost map scrap. ‘It’s riddle-form—it fits nothing standard. You see that S-curve?’ Jin squints. ‘Looks like an arrow, not just a line.’ Eno crouches, shakes. Shiro puts her shoulder to his and says, ‘Trade with me. Here.’ She takes his crystal. It sputters, glows gently. ‘Why keep running, Shiro?’ Eno asks, soft as dusk. ‘Isn’t knowledge poison sometimes?’ In silence, a promise dignifies her stare. ‘So the world opens, not shrinks. We run so every street isn’t a dead end for kids like us.’ The others go quiet. Call her foolish or brave, but the only sin she won’t swallow is inaction.

An echo rolls in: boots, a Seton signal bomb, a quick drift of dark smoke—they’ve been found. The night becomes a hiding game, each nook raising hope or threat as the moon peeks through caved glass. Looking for friends? Watching worn hands twist puzzle shards is oddly soothing.

As the last of the obstacles seem to clear, a roof caves, collapsing Jin and Hane into darkness below. Alive, but trapped. Footsteps scuffle inches overhead. Eno shoves Shiro to a scrim of plaster, pulling her down. ‘Wait. If you go now, it’s all of us toast.’ Moonray strikes crystal and puzzle at once. The script on the map lights up with an outline-Shiro’s name carved in glyphs not even she knows. How long til you’d break if hunted like this?

The script speaks aloud with a voice like stone scraped on wood. Everyone freezes. Eno whispers, ‘That’s not a message for friends, Shiro.’ Above, a Seton cutthroat says, ‘Circle that light… don’t let them out!’ Who can guess if courage even helps now?

The episode freezes—all eyes peeled for next steps, but the Cartographer’s glow, the riddle in the dark, stays unresolved as torches circle. End cliffhanger: ‘Next, the Web of Owls begins,’ an unknown voice breathes. Have you ever run with a clue burning in your heart, every step watched, risking all for a piece of light in gray haze? Who chooses, who’s chosen, now that all tracks head to Traitor’s Lark?
