Haru Mizu, seventeen, stands by the shore’s edge at dawn. Salted wind grazes his face. He hums rough little songs, half in jest, half just to see if anyone hears. Each note echoes with hope. He wants to find relics left by the sea. Rumor says mysteries sleep below the calm waves at Starfall Cove.
Nami, always near and always watchful, leaps down from the breakwater. Her wild pink hair is hard to miss. She grins at Haru, raising a half-fished bottle with something small sealed inside. ‘Bet you can’t top this,’ she says, feigning triumph. They’ve big plans: chart the odd things that wash into their town. But today, village talk buzzes about the rumors of music on the wind when stars fall. Do you ever wonder if myths are true, or does your head just skip past them?
Haru can’t get the question out of his mind—does anyone else hear those haunting sounds from the bay? Sun’s higher now. Nami nudges him. She found footprints by the sand using a piece of amber to read their shapes. Said they’re too long for the local folks, maybe from something—or someone—new. Do ghosts walk here, or is it kids just making stories again?
Taro, their soft-spoken classmate, stumbles up next. He’s dragging a cumbersome old radio found near the pier. ‘Listen to this…’ White noise blasts, then, deep within—a low, strange harmony that bends as tides shift. Radio static hangs over them for a long moment. What if it’s not just broken tech? Taro wishes to study sound-waves in college; maybe he’ll crack this.
Nami claims the city folks lost something down here moons ago. That night, people gather at the shore when the forecast says there’ll be a meteor shower. Haru sneaks away from the group, led by an odd rhythm just under his skin. 
He sees a shadow sitting on the sharp rocks beneath the lighthouse. Shrouded in a coat patched of nets and scales, a girl—singing, softly, for herself. Never a tune made by any human. Each word seems old. Haru starts, afraid she’ll vanish with the next blink.
He catches her eye. It’s calm and deep, strangely lonely. Words fall out of him before he means to speak. ‘Do you write all your songs by yourself?’ he asks. She blinks, then smiles like water shining. ‘Only on nights the stars are falling,’ she answers in a faded voice.
Haru tilts his head; he’s never met a soul like this. They’re quiet together, this odd pair. The sea crashes and soothes, just behind them. Where would you run if you heard a song calling your name in the dark?
From the cliff above, Nami and Taro spot Haru but pause. They’ve seen the girl’s phantom look before, long past dark, half-remembered dreams after late studies. Nami grabs Taro’s sleeve. ‘If you go too close, the song might pull you under,’ she worries half-aloud.
Below, the girl offers Haru a sliver of crystal. It’s clear yet glows dimly. When he holds it, fragments of places flash in his eyes—forests underwater, cities drowned, lights where there should be only dark. ‘With this, you can hear those who come to Starfall to say goodbye,’ she shares. Any normal child would have run, but curiosity glues him in place.
Nami’s bottle from earlier rolls beside them. It bumps Haru’s sea-wet foot. From inside, faint music hums, the same harmony caught on Taro’s radio before. The wind rockets. All grows dizzy, shining. Is this real life or the late hours’ trick?
Sudden rain splinters the strange spell. The girl steps back toward the surf, voice full of old sadness. Rainwater trickles down her scaled sleeve, making soft ringing notes. ‘You’ll forget all unless you listen hard and trust the tide.’ And as Haru blinks, she’s gone. Just vanished, with starlight glimmer caught on the wet rocks.
‘Did you see that?’ Taro slides down after Nami. They’re out of breath. All three now huddle in a strange hush, the crystal piece heavy in Haru’s hand. What will he do with it?
Stars begin to fall in real time, lines cutting silver and silent across the dark sky. Haru faces his friends, amazed and changed. Nami grins, shakes water from her hair, and squeezes the bottle tight.
‘Think it’s safe to go back to the cove tomorrow?’ Taro asks, voice edged with awe, maybe worry. No one answers quick—they just stare, wide-eyed at the shards of cosmic light. If you could meet the unexplainable, would you share it or keep it secret forever?
Something’s awakened beneath Starfall. The strange harmony pulses on the wind. Under the moon, a faint figure drifts far down the beach, singing her song for the waves alone. Cliffhanger: Next dawn, the group find mysterious writing carved in the sand, bright and shimmering—and the crystal begins to softly buzz in Haru’s pocket as the tide pulls higher.
