A Spark in the Depths: The Shatterguard Underground Arc

Episode Arc: ‘A Spark in the Depths: The Shatterguard Underground Arc’

Kai Fushida saw things others missed. In the night, the hidden shimmer of the city’s enemy. That’s what kept him up. Why did Astermetropolis tremble on its own ground? Did anyone see what he saw?

One night in the skate alley under Ion Bridge, Kai listened for strange steps. He almost turned home. Then, something shifted the pipes—old metal rang. Again. But that shudder wasn’t wind. He ducked behind boxes. Did the myths have teeth after all?

Lead pipes moved. Out walked Raine Pierce, Kai’s friend, with smart wipes on her sleeves, old camera in hand. She whispered, “They’re here.” Kai tried to act bored. “Who?” Her answer wasn’t sound but a twitch: Shadow’s Hand.

They saw it together. Glints in the sewer’s black. Four white masks slid below the surface, vanishing near the hidden panel Taro marked years back. Would you ever trust what your eyes showed you in the dark?

Kai didn’t leap to fight. He felt his jacket for Hidden Jammer V. He licked dry lips. Raine caught his look—she lifted her disc transmitter. “Ready,” she said. He only nodded. The idea was stupid and brave, the kind that stuck in his mind all week: trail Shadow’s Hand into their home.

A burly shape lumbered from up-river. Kenta, barely awake, stumbled near, holding cold noodles and fix tape ruin. “Did the council send us to die?” joked Kai, his pulse wild. None smiled.

Jax, last to arrive, had electric eyes. He was quick, a lean ex-spy now always trailing Raine. Jax snapped, “No time for chat.” When Raine and Jax argued, Kai merely grinned—no one else heard their wild backstories. “This is our shot, so don’t break heads yet,” Raine warned, shoving her way into the storm drain the masks had vanished to.

The world below seethed—a tangle of wire, echoes, humid air. Steps bounced in the pitch. Rags fluttered over hacked consoles. Their camera flickered. Jax, on edge, kept one cool hand for the trigger, one for the wall.

Sudden jump. The group found glove marks left on a cracked latch by Drake, Shadow’s muscle. It was recent. The tension in Kai tightened. Kenta asked, “Why keep looking? They want a trap.” Still, down they went, quiet but never at ease.

Concrete stairs. The hum of lost power lines. Ahead, a crimson shimmer blinked. Raine tapped out code that cracked the next lock open. It squealed too loud. For too long nothing moved. Then a harsh voice rang—the kind that crawls inside your bones. “Who hunts shadows?”

From above, alarms blared. Three Hand fighters dropped with long batons out.

What happened then? Feet slammed stone. Kenta tossed his dead noodles and rushed the first fighter, using bulk to pin him. Jax grinned, bounced right, and jammed two buttons—the fight kicked off sharp and cold. Was their blade faster than luck?

Raine used sound smoke—a quick crack, and half the nearest thugs blinked, blinded for seconds. In that moody dark, Kai swept feet under trainer boots. All he knew spilled out in defense moves he’d drilled since he was ten. Mask men fell, got up, and fell again. Was winning luck or skill, tonight? Or only hope?

They shattered more than heads. Their chase went deep—the next room sat heavy, full of strange blue light that stuck to Kai’s eyes. Jax mumbled, “Looks like an old driller pit. What do Shadows want down here?”

Someone moved beyond. The Hand’s leader, Hayashi, stepped from glow-light. Her metal hair swung sharp. She raised her baton in lazy arcs. “Four lost mice,” she spoke, voice too smooth. “Care to squeak a reason before the stick cracks?”

Kai thought quick. “We came to warn you. The tower’s a spell zone—you break it, it breaks you.” Raine scrawled signals behind her friend’s back, trying to find a feed for backup to call in the council. Jax crouched low, muttering about his ex-boss, hinting this mission had ties to higher-up games.

Without waiting for talk, Hayashi swept at Kenta. Bat made a sharp crack against his steel bracer. Sparks flew—no blood, not yet, but promise of hurt. The fight shifted. Kenta stumbled but braced again, digging feet like stone. Would he fall this time?

Did any team really trust each other deep down? Kenta’s surge set two Hands spinning, and Raine’s disc smacked a third slick mask off the pipes. Hayashi, not flinching, swung in again, quicker than a fox over ice. Her baton flashed. It bit cloth but missed bone as Jax flipped above. Movement twisted pain across Raine’s shoulder.

Suddenly lights blanked out. Sparks fell slow, then power snapped back and thunder crashed outside. “Great,” Kai grunted, “now we dance.” Hidden sensors in Raine’s kit flashed. “They cordoned us in. All doors: locked tight.”

Hayashi circled back. Her voice was low. “You want out, you drop what you came for.” Her squad pressed in. “Do we tell the secret, or fight for it?” That snapped Kai to full focus. The whole underground clattered and whined. Would someone betray the team?

Jax signaled, shifting stance for a hidden throw. Raine flicked her comm, pulsing out-comm snippets. She hoped the outside would hear them screaming—would anyone answer? Kenta slumped at the entry, nose split but eyes still hard. Could they push through, really?

One Hand kid, newer and jumpy, wavered at the back. Kai moved to talk, hoping mercy could break pride. “Drop it,” Kai whispered. “Shadow’s gone—be something more.” Sweat ran rivers across cold stone faces.

Hayashi snapped, “I decide for them!” She bashed the wall; metal shards and dust rained down. Above, the ceiling shut heavy. “No more running.”

Kai braced for another launch, voice taut. “Our secret: not scare. It’s hope. We know about your reactor, the deal council is cutting. We’re not their tools. Let us leave, and we walk alone.”

Hayashi’s lips showed a line smile. “And what if I want your hope too?” Raine’s backup crackled; help—far above—inched their way down. Sounds of shouting feet, council gear tearing through grids. But the underground maze shifted. Which exit was fake?

Suddenly, static whips screamed through Raine’s comm. Then new shock: the sewer walls shivered, cracking along the main pit. Hayashi hesitated—her team flinched, unsure. Kenta roared and bull-rushed again, driving two thugs into collapsed stone.

Raine’s hands bled, but her heart set on breaking codes: “I’ll storm their door with a virus,” she said. Sparks shot from her jam disc as code blipped through steel gates. Buried doors groaned—an opening emerged. Could one team sprint through fast enough?

Lights swirled. Council zen drones shot dim rays past Kai and Raine. They ducked, slipping side to side, chased by shadow grips. “C’mon! Move!” barked Jax, shoving Kenta through. Raine right behind spilled broken metal down boots. Why risk life every night?

Only Kai stopped. At the swirling pit edge, Hayashi watched too, eyes full of unshed promise. “Come with us!” Kai offered suddenly. Did old wounds heal? Hayashi cocked her head, unreadable, while jets and cracks made talk near-impossible.

Cliffhanger, then. A roar. The steam rift finally burst—a flash of blue-white hit old rails and shook the world. The fight paused. All faces up to light and dread. Will the Hand and council destroy the lower world in war? Or can Kai’s hope ignite them all before the next quake?
