The Quantum-Grades Tournament: Genius Showdown at Daikoku High

This arc begins in the spring. It’s the last term at Daikoku High, a place for those with a head for math, science, and code. Meet our protagonist, Jun Nara. He’s known for solving puzzles before others even see the question. His hair’s always a little off, like he left the library in the middle of a proof. Jun’s tired, though. This year, he wants more than just a perfect score. He wants to prove himself, but not in the test results alone.

One day, Sen Hoshino, Daikoku’s Student Council head, bursts into Jun’s homeroom. She tosses an invite onto his books. “It’s time you face us, Jun,” she says, smirking. The invitation is for the Quantum-Grades Tournament, a contest rumored to spin normal rules and shatter old records. Teams get puzzles tied to real equations; the answers don’t earn grades, but straight digital currency used only inside the tournament walls. Would you join if you were Jun?

Mika, a fast-talking coder with an obsession for short scripts, soon teams up with Jun. “I swore I’d take Sen down this year,” Mika says, barely pausing from coding. They form an odd alliance with Eiji, a much quieter soul. Eiji never talks much; most think he’s just shy, until you see him build graphs on the board faster than a printer spills ink. Is brilliance worth something if nobody sees it?

Rounds start hectic. Teams gather in a huge hall under bright, plain lamps. Problems begin simple: “Reverse engineer this code in under five minutes.” Eiji’s hand doesn’t tremble. He reads quick, solves faster. Mika traces string bugs like a fox through a hedge. Jun? He stares at the board, silent, while others buzz. A sense hangs in the air—is he doubting himself, or seeing past what the rest miss?

The challenge rises. One puzzle: scale an algorithm for language tracking without overflow. Mika’s fingers run. “Whitelist by frequency,” she murmurs, counting letters in her head loud enough for the captains of enemy teams to snicker. Eiji creates dashed notes, graphs, columns in two neat lines. Jun stands. He crosses the board. Instead of coding, he draws odd circles around keywords.

Total silence, except for him whispering: “You can map context, not just letters. Try here, here, draw across nodes!” Mika blinks, but tries it. Eiji nods; follows. Their new branch beats the timer, minutes before any crew has a shot. What drives that kind of wild vision? Is it built, or born?

Sen’s team waits at the next round, grinning like they can taste victory early. Sen’s teammates include Kyoko, a fast-talking editor, and Daichi, the last debate champ. The contest shifts. Instead of numbers, it’s logic on logic: rewrite the Noah’s Ark theorem as proof for cyber defenses, explain it in common words. Daichi leans smug against the wall. “I hope you two know your logic water-tight,” he laughs.

Here, Jun nearly panics—words have always been harder than numbers. Mika shakes her head. “Stick with the main flaw and work out,” she says, and paces as she plots their argument. Eiji starts outlining proof shapes. Jun recalls something their advisor told him. “Imagine your reader as Sen. How would you beat her?” He steadies his nerves with straight breaths, fixes a line of reasoning, adds in flip questions to counter lost points.

Narration cuts between rounds: instant judgment, shouts, paper balls thrown instead of just digital points. Rival teams watch. Bodies tense. The top runner-ups stay tied, pressure so thick it’s hard to speak. Want to stand in that room and fight with ideas?

Over snacks later, Mika, still hyped, says she’s sure Daichi will slip: “He bet last year’s clubwork against Sen’s record-without-loss. He won’t want you to hear—but Daichi is really scared of you, Jun.” This shakes Jun, and he glances away. “He should be. I’m tired of hiding our strength. Let’s win, loudly.”

Quarterfinals fall into chaos. For the first second, Jun’s group is clobbered on a group-stage numerical logic set, losing nearly all early points. Sen’s team sits still, not smiling. Eiji’s fist balls up. “Let’s not break. If we walk now, all those problem sets last winter mean zip,” he says to Jun.

With the gym full, judges present “Tricky That Last Problem.” The digital timer clicks coldly. Meanwhile, team leads start cheating, and side bets crackle with tension. Words become weapon. Mika claws her way through a recursive branch the other teams print wrong by default. Jun sits silent for thirty seconds, then, at the last tick, sketches four easy swaps no one else thought of. Samurai silence outlasts panic, he remembers—prob solved.

Past the mass tension, one surprise: the Tournament’s founders join on a screen and set the finals to happen late at night, outside, under city lights. “Is truth just written in code, or in guts?” they joke. “Finals break the wall between math, words, and motive.” You see the impact: this test, unknown, free form. Sen looks Jun square in the eyes and grins wide. “Don’t blink tomorrow. This is who leads Daikoku next.”

The team breaks up for the night, wrestling with how to train now. In the dark, Jun walks home alone, under light rain. A note sits in his locker: “If you lose, join the faculty—leave the drama to the rest of us.” Signed, ‘Daikoku old guard.’ Even in a school that builds brains, somebody wants to limit risk, force shadows instead of shining. Jun clutches the slip, lips thin. “Not this year,” he whispers.

Midnight hits. Storm clouds gather over the rooftop where finals will pop off. Sen’s arm sways over her side of the table, eyes slitted, voice low. Mika and Eiji stand at Jun’s left. Announcer bell rings, storm rolls in for real. “No tools, only chalk and words!” Judges call out: “Create your own problem and solve it publicly.” Suddenly, the test flips—creativity, bravery, and all eyes fixed. Heart thunder builds up; rain slips off a hundred bent spines. Who owns Daikoku’s future? The final shots stall. A flash of white on the corner frame—signature slip from old guard. All pans wide, freeze: Jun face-to-face with Sen under thunder-lit skies.

Will Jun’s odd sense win, or will he cave under years of secrets, tricks, power whispers? Has Daikoku raised a sheep, or a rival for legends? You’ll have to check episode two. Thunder booms and screens go black.
