The mist hits as dusk falls. Toba, a lonely high schooler with few friends, waits at the old tram stop, half-lit by dying bulbs. He hears a snap behind the bench. The forest is too close here. His phone loses signal. “Hey… who’s there?”
Silence. A black cat stares, then vanishes between two twisted trunks. Toba shrugs it off and starts to walk the main road home. He’s stopped by a small shrine he doesn’t remember. Fresh moss covers stone. There’s an offering bowl, empty except for ash. He kneels to look closer. “Weird,” he mutters, brushing dust from crude letters. The woods press closer. Toba remembers something: the shrine’s bowl, now full. Slippery red petals fall like rain. Yui fumbles through photos, hoping to catch the truth. Toba grabs Ren and Kazumi, struggling as mud pulls their feet. “Nobody leaves once Higan roots take you,” Kazumi warns, crying. The episode ends with Ren gasping for air, half-free, as Toba drags him out. Behind them, Kazumi limps, face streaked with red. The last shot focuses on the cat perched atop the now bloody shrine.
