Episode Summary
The night fog drifts over Kazeya City, casting odd lights across the watersheds and old city streets. Yuu Nakatomo, a 17-year-old with a knack for piecing together strange hints, ponders rumors he overheard: after dark, a ghost whistles haunting tunes from the old Angelus Railway Bridge. Last week, a local dog wouldn’t stop barking near the site. Before dawn, a classmate vanished there.
Does anyone else get chills when you walk somewhere so dense with stories? Kazeya’s always felt like that. Places live and breathe through the tales, don’t they?
Tonight, Yuu stands with flashlight in hand at the southern post of the bridge, squinting at the empty black water below. Mei Otsuka, his best friend, spits out gum and scoffs, “Ghosts aren’t real… but that dog, Hiro, was shaking for hours.” Their friend Jun blares punk through cheap headphones, but now and then, he glances at the locked gate with big, unsure eyes.
Strange marks line the steel bars—deep scores cut into the dark rust. Someone, or something, tried to get in, or out. Mei runs her finger along a splatter, hoping it wipes off. It doesn’t. “Is this ink?” she says. Yuu leans closer, scrapes up a flake, and narrows his eyes. “It reeks—like some old machine oil or…a hospital.” Not blood, but odd. The sort of thing that itches at you all evening.
A sudden clang. Jun yelps. Hiro the dog bolts into gloom, baying at shadows under the old bridge. Somethingsilver spits between the flashes of light from passing cars. The air smells strange—cold, bitter, like stale medicine. 
Now it’s not just something to laugh off. Yuu’s chest thumps. He sees drifting fog part up ahead, and in its midst, a pale shape, wavering on the girders. It wears a cracked-enamel mask. Not the face of a ghost, but real eyes behind—the same strange blue as Yuu’s missing classmate. “Did you see that too?” Yuu whispers. This time everyone nods.
The group stumbles closer, inch by inch, tips of their shoes grazing the rails. As the fog touches their knees, cold seeps up through their socks and leaves toes numb. “Turn back?” Mei asks, trying to sound bored. Can bravado hide more fear in these long, quiet moments?
Yuu keeps going, hand over the slip of old photos sticking from his coat. “Reo was here that night. I found his watch near that bench,” Yuu thinks. The gears that always hound Yuu’s dreams whirr; can lost things ever be found intact, or do they come back changed, greater for having been lost?
A string of pennies falls in a wet rattle from somewhere high above. Then muffled crying. Neither wind nor wounded animal, but short, soft sobs. Someone’s up there. Probably alive. Not a ghost, right? Why would a ghost sound so…tired?
They climb toward the upper walkway, using a flashlight and a hacked phone lantern. Every step scrapes metal, sending jitters through the fog and their ribs. Jun stops at a small sharp clump—human hair, maybe, wrapped with green thread. “A charm for luck.” Mei shrugs it off, mouth in a smirk, but she picks up her steps and doesn’t toss the little thing away.
Just past halfway, Yuu finds a scarf that belonged to Reo. He lifts and smells—dust, metal, something faded sweet. No ghost would leave memories with a scent. Someone’s trying to speak, using things. The idea hits him, quick and odd: “Is Reo out there asking us for help, not haunting us?”
As they near the bridge’s apex, sounds thicken: taps, a dragging creak, water slop from below. But on the other side of the bars, a blue-tinted notebook sits atop a box, along with a locked phone—Reo’s! “Jun, do you still know his code?” Yuu hisses.
Wind rises. Lights from below flicker. Soon they’re shivering so hard Mei drops her gum mid-chew. She looks up at the shape on the far girder just as it moves, slow and mechanical, but not stumbling like a drunk ghost—a person, cautious, hurt?
Just as Jun manages to key into Reo’s phone, a loud clang breaks their focus and they all jump. The masked figure wrenches the notebook into its coat and vanishes behind a lattice—the grind and snap of old metal signals a hidden escape. The dog Hiro howls from below. Yuu stares down at a single clue in the opened phone: a draft text, reading, ‘Not a ghost, but…’—message not sent.
“Run or follow?” Jun half-laughs, half-cries. No joke, who hasn’t locked at the edge before, wondering if the truth might push your life off balance? They bolt after the masked person, but at mid-span, fog wraps them so tight their hands vanish in front. When it breaks enough to show them the lattice, both the mask and Reo’s notebook are gone. 
Cliffhanger: did they just let a desperate soul slip into deeper danger, or are they part of a play set long before they arrived? Only one thing’s clear: the clues are meant for them. Someone will be back at dawn, missing, changed, or haunted for real…
